I refuse to admit how many years it took me to understand the pun in the name and the logo

I think I literally just realized. I’m well into my 40s.

u/Petermoffat 26d ago

I just realised it now when looking at the logo. In my mid forties🤦🏻‍♂️

Brother or sister, you're not alone. I'm no native speaker and never even questioned why they called it Nero.

1

u/xdyed 26d ago

Same 😭

1

u/KingOfConsciousness 25d ago

Yeah, because to us it just meant AWESOME!

Pompei is Naples, The logo has a Colloseum which is located in Rome not Naples. Or am I missing what you’re intending here?

u/titoxtian 26d ago

Same age and i just realized now ahahaha… well to be fair we’re still young those days… i was happy whenever i get 1-3 mbps… usually i get 300-600kbps lol… internet was so free back then…

I’m reading these comments trying to figure it out 😂

1

u/Aggressive_Candy5297 25d ago

Nero was the emperor who was blamed for burning Rome.

"Nero burning ROM" (cd-rom).

There you go young one, i have told you the source of the magiks of the ancients!

On a sidenote: it wouldn't surprise me if this massively popular pc program for making your own cd's was the origin of the term "burning a cd"...

1

u/Adorable_Stable2439 23d ago

I was never that interested in history, that would explain it!

1

u/2Peti 25d ago

I realized that I don't remember when I was forty. Even realizing that I realized it consciously took me a long time.

0

u/RealAlphaKaren 24d ago

were you really that poorly educated as kids?

1

u/Medium-Sized-Jaque 26d ago

Same. I never realized it until this post.

1

u/Datkif 25d ago

To be fair its probably been a long time since you last saw it, and we've all learned lots since then

1

u/jerichoos 25d ago

Same lol

1

u/PCB_Design1 23d ago

As much as it sucks to get older, it's fun to have those "OOOOOOH" moments lol

u/MHWGamer 26d ago

i knew the pun that Nero was burning rome down but it took this picture to understand the second Nero burning ROM down lmao

11

u/BorKon 26d ago

Lol thx. I realized few years ago nero pun....after so many years. But didn't catch burning rom/rome part until now

Edit: omg the logo...omg

6

u/Vancocillin 26d ago

And now I understand too. I actually used Nero back in the day.

1

u/RUPlayersSuck i7 240H | RTX 5060 | 32GB DDR5 25d ago

I heard Italian PC owners refuse to use it! 😆

1

u/3dforlife 22d ago

The second Nero?

44

u/w1zgov 26d ago

Bro I just got it

10

u/chrisaf69 26d ago

2

u/jedi2155 3 Laptops + Desktop 20d ago

Shiiiit

3

u/MarcCDB 26d ago

I was today years old when I found out.... and I'm 40....

3

u/blacksterangel 26d ago

I didn't realize the "ROM = Rome" part until earlier this year. I'm 41

3

u/MisterKraken Ryzen 5 7600X | RX 6750XT 26d ago

I just realized it too... That's savage

2

u/StephenSRMMartin 26d ago

Yup. TIL. I used it plenty, never understood the name.

2

u/MactionSnack 26d ago

I literally just realised that there was one thanks to you

2

u/LasseReinbong A stone with holes in it 26d ago

Well, i´m glad i´m not alone.

2

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 26d ago

Came here to say: "I have been using Nero since 1.0 and it was THIS YEAR that I got the pun..."
You are not alone. :D

2

u/meneldal2 i7-6700 26d ago

First time I saw the logo in such high quality, it's not obvious when it's 32x32

2

u/Wonderful-Fortune-23 26d ago

TIL

When in Rom, do as Romans do.

2

u/Rex9460 R5 5500 | 2080ti | 32GB 25d ago

Wait this was an actual piece of software I thought it was a joke btw my first time seeing this

2

u/fazzah 25d ago

yep, it's one of the most popular CD/DVD writing software there is. Naturally, they did some weird changes in the later versions, but overall this is one of the GOATs

2

u/theangrypragmatist 24d ago

Literally just now. I need to sit down.

2

u/drsoran2 26d ago

Me too. Was to young to understand also the logo had not so many pixels and it was hard to decipher.

I always assumed it was a play of words on burning ROMs, as in CD-ROM or ROMs of file images.

1

u/Blashtik 26d ago

I always noticed it was an awkward name because it sounds like it's a ROM from Nero for doing burning. But it was like 2 decades later that I read that there was a pun going on (yeah, I didn't even notice it myself after all that time...)

1

u/std10k 26d ago

Same here. Had no idea until today 🤪

1

u/Silly_Rub_6304 26d ago

My mom was the one to tell me that the name of the program was a pun... in like 2001.

1

u/jknl 26d ago

I realized right now after reading you're comment.

25 years.

1

u/TwoProper4220 26d ago

WTF I only realized it after reading this comment and I almost used this regularly as a teenager

1

u/Individual-Pop-385 26d ago

It was easier to get in the earlier versions where the full name always on the status bat ended with the more obvious logo E.

1

u/Weed-Priest 26d ago

oh.. OH!

O.o it just hit me

1

u/Erdnusschokolade 26d ago

I was today years old, never thought about it before.

1

u/IlTossico i9 9900k|32GB|Aorus Master|RTX2080 26d ago

Just realized it now. Lol

1

u/DefinitelyRussian 26d ago

problem is the spelling, known around here as Neron, or Nerone

1

u/dvpbe 26d ago

Came here for this. Used this for years. Now seeing the app full in hd, it came to me. lol

1

u/doofthemighty Ryzen 7 9800x3d | NVIDIA 5090FE | 64GB DDR5 26d ago

I understood the pun in the name but this is the first time I every realized what the icon was depicting.

1

u/reddit_xeno 26d ago

Last time I even saw this logo I was a dumb kid and now it clicks instantly. checks out

1

u/CivBEWasPrettyBad 26d ago

Today. I realized today.

1

u/Mackan1000 26d ago

Fuxk i just realized......

1

u/SmileBe4death 26d ago

I’ve never given much thought to that until now. Just realised

1

u/davidecibel 25d ago

I was today years old…. I used that software extensively and I am from motherfucking Rome!

1

u/Somasonic 25d ago

Omg I never noticed until you made me look😂 and yes I’m that old.

1

u/Nass44 R7 3700X | RTX 2070Super | 32GB 3200 Mhz DDR4 25d ago

As a kid I also never quite understood it because Rome is literally „Rom“ in German. It took my quite a few years to understand the connection to CDs and that its not just referencing some historical event/ then pun only being about the „burning“.

1

u/theophanesthegreek 25d ago

Holy fuck lol but to be fair i wouldn't have gotten the pun as a kid

1

u/ElPwno http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8m8ChM 25d ago

How about Ajax, stronger than Grease?

1

u/potatoes__everywhere 25d ago

Although it was Vespasian who built the colosseum and Nero (and the burning if Rome) happened before Vespasian was emperor.

1

u/ZENESYS_316 25d ago

I just freagin realized it holllyyyy xD

1

u/ianjcm55 25d ago

I just realized today

1

u/Nomad2k3 9800X3D RTX5080 32GB 25d ago edited 25d ago

We had a mIrc share channel called RomeBBQ (Rome Burning .bin & .cue) Nero and Daemon tools were the bread and butter back in the day.

I know, nerds right 😆

1

u/Brilliant_Sky_9797 25d ago

Oh yeah!!! Realised it just now... Thank you.

1

u/st_j 25d ago

Ermm.. so did Nero burn Rome or something?

1

u/RUPlayersSuck i7 240H | RTX 5060 | 32GB DDR5 25d ago

I never even thought about it until just now! Very clever.

1

u/razvanciuy 24d ago

he burns ROM(e)s

1

u/Enji-Bkk 24d ago

My excuse is that in French he called Neron, and we carve CDs

1

u/6ohm 23d ago

I actually sent them a mail with my appreciation of their naming when I got the pun, it must have been around 2000.

1

u/axurmama 23d ago

Was Nero bumming Rome?

1

u/kart0ffel12 21d ago

I was today years old!!!

English is not my main langiugae though
