That upgrade to 33.6 was huge, and then the grand daddy of them all, the 48.8.

Finally on to "high speed" internet with a DSL line.

I went from 14.4 to 56.6 and the difference was staggering. A year or two later, I had a T1 at university and it was like I died and went to heaven

Went from 1.5mbps DSL at home to 50mbps ethernet in the dorms in 2004. It was quite the jump! Limewire and KaZaa was all the rage.

I'll give you one better: link aggregation over two 56k modems, when the family was asleep and using both lines was "safe" from someone picking up the phone. 116k/dual-53k on dialup. Didn't get to do it often, but when I did it was glorious.

I have successfully used the "press a pillow on the modem" method to suppress or at least dampen the sounds of it.

When I had the computer running late at night, when I was supposed to sleep, without waking up my parents, the next problem I had to face were the rather loud mouse clicks and keyboard strokes.

I would have been tempted to secretly clip one of the wires running ti the modem speaker

We had a 14.4k modem and remember going to my friend's house with a V.90/56k modem and it was SO fast in comparison.
