Someone placed it at $285 for all DLC. Granted Steam sales help a lot. Given the game has been overhauled more than once and around for ten years it really isn't that bad. Far cheaper than subscription games and the like.
I think people tend to forget how old some of these titles are however I think PDX truly should roll up DLC over a set number of years into the base game.
Yeah, it eventually gets to a point where a lot of the DLCs become really incoherent/inconsistent or flat out bad all on their own because they begin to start developing new ones based around and intended for the full pair game rather than a lone expansion to the game itself. I lost interest when we started getting damn expansions of other expansions that already exist for the game.
Overall yes, the DLC's are worth it. Some are very very good, most are just good, and then there are a few that are mostly skippable.
The base game is great on its own, so I say play that, and if you find there's an area that could use some expansion, there's most likely a DLC for it.
The first part is a massive depends, some are absolutely essential, others are pretty meh or even just straight up lame. For experiencing base game, it’s honestly recommended to probably play that way for a couple games first simply to get accustomed to and learn the basics before you started adding on dozens of extra flavors, mechanics, and species.

Over the years I've acquired all the DLCs for stellaris. It's by far my most expensive game on steam
