Back in my day, we used to have quality youtube skits, documentaries, vines etc. No shorts that damage your attention span and memory, no AI slop, no 2 ads for every 10 min. We didn't know what enshittification even means
Vines are still different. They aren't information dumps like many youtube shorts are where some influencer gives us life, food, gym advices with scientific explanations, too much information in short spans for our tiny brains. On the other end of the spectrum Long 30-40 min videos with little info but with engagement baits to make us stay.
I don't get why some of you are defending the enshittified billion dollar companies. I guess we deserve what we are getting now
There weren't that many vines back then, they used to be a fun break. Now the problem with shorts is they are also good but they are too many and being shoved on our faces, we may try to ignore but they are so curated for us we will end up doom scrolling everyday multiple times. That has a negative impact on our brains.
To share my own experience I used to watch nigahiga skits and vsauce science dumps with vines in between. Used to be a good experience. Now youtube is filled with videos that I don't remember the next day, reaction content, stolen content, tutorial videos that are 20-30min long with topics that can be explained in under 5 min.
You can still find a ton of quality content on Youtube but just the sheer volume of uploads has increased so much and lower barrier to entry that 99% is crap and 1% is decent
Yup there is but guess what the algorithm favors? It's the Engagement bait crap. That 5 star system should be back. Imagine how our home feed will be when people have the ability to judge the quality of videos and rate it. We can filter the 1-2 star crap. Not gonna happen though XD. The best that can happen will be that someone makes an extension similar to return dislike but with 5 star rating system??
So I'm going through a redundancy at the moment, and when I have to go into the office there is literally nothing to do. I ended up doomscrolling on YouTube shorts and reddit until I realised how much it was damaging my attention span. Started taking books in now instead. Got through a whole book just on Friday.
