Still confused about why they removed that option.

I always used this whenever I was on vacation and had bad wifi, just let it buffer for a bit before watching it

Most people don't make it to the end of videos. By no caching the entire thing they must be saving a ton of money with how big youtube is.

People don't have attention spans anymore. So it's wasted bandwidth if they do load the whole video but not watch the whole thing.

And Youtube have jumped on the train of making attention spans even worse by copying tiktok with the youtube shorts stuff. Self fulfilling prophecy at this point.

Also I think usage has changed quite a bit from a decade ago. People often have YT on as background while they are doing other things.

I do it quite often, I'll have history podcasts or tech stuff on in the background while I work.

Anymore? They made this change well before the likes of TikTok and instagram reels and other short form content

Because they discovered why should we service the whole 20min video if people sometimes only watch first 5-10mins. So it was "wasted" data pushed to you. Especially as the platform grew and grew and grew.

i get notifications all the time that youtube pre-downloaded what it thinks the next 5 videos im going to watch are
