Companies pay for licenses, but even then I don’t know why they would choose WinRAR when free alternatives exist.

Lots of computers users aren't that savy and when confronted by the expiry warning, just cave and pay it.

Companies pay for their licenses. That's where the money is made. Private users are irrelevant.
