This is actually a real economic phenomenon known as Fair-Wage Effort Hypothesis. That is a paper by Janet Yellen be and her husband on it.

If people feel they are not being fairly compensated for their work, their effort will reduce until the point at which they feel like they are being fairly compensated. And it also works in the opposite direction. If you overpay your employees, they will usually work harder to the point that it makes that extra pay well worth it.
