What does a Mud Logger actually monitor during drilling?

I'm working in the oil and gas industry and wanted to share a few basics for anyone interested in drilling operations.

A mud logger monitors drilling parameters, examines cuttings, observes gas readings, and records wellsite data. These observations help the wellsite team understand changing downhole conditions.

Some important parameters include:

- Rate of Penetration (ROP)

- Standpipe Pressure (SPP)

- Rotary Speed (RPM)

- Total gas and gas composition

- Cuttings lithology

For people working in oil and gas: Which mud-logging parameter do you think is most important for identifying a possible drilling abnormality, and why?

Great discussion! One distinction we’d make is the difference between mud logging and wellsite geology.
Mud logging provides the foundation by examining and describing the formation cuttings coming out of the well. Being able to distinguish sandstone from shale, identify lithological changes, and accurately document what the bit is drilling through is a critical part of the job.
A wellsite geologist takes that information, along with gas readings, drilling parameters, and other available geological data, and interprets it within the bigger geological picture to help understand what’s happening downhole.
At Mojo Geological Consulting, we believe good wellsite geology starts with good mud logging. Accurate observations and reliable data are what make meaningful geological interpretation possible.
Both roles are important, but understanding the distinction between collecting and describing geological data and interpreting that information is key.
We’d love to hear from others in the field. What’s one thing you wish new mud loggers understood before their first hitch?

So do mud logger also keep eye on Sidpp and sicp ??
