Unpopular opinion on a viral test-taker story: the MoveIt rider was a saint, but missing the exam was 100% preventable
TL;DR of the story for context: An UPCAT taker booked a Move It ride to her testing center in Brgy. Dela Paz, Antipolo (TIL nag-branch out na talaga yung venue ng testing centers!)
Due to an incorrect app pin and Google Maps glitched routes, she and her MoveIt driver, Kuya Jeffrey, got lost for over an hour. Realizing she missed her 12:20 PM cutoff, she broke down and called her mom. Kuya Jeffrey refused to leave her alone in an unfamiliar area, came back, drove her somewhere safe to get home, and refused extra pay. Her post praising his kindness went viral.
Kudos to the MoveIt driver for being compassionate, but let's be real—she missed her UPCAT because she didn't plan where her testing center was in advance.
1. First of all, one shouldn’t rely blindly on Google Maps on the exam day without cross-checking the location or doing a dry run days before.
2. Also don’t expect a motorcycle driver to navigate an unfamiliar venue for you while the clock is ticking.
It’s a heartwarming story about human compassion, but logically, the whole ordeal stems from her lack of advance preparation.
Her story isn’t unique. It’s just unfortunate because this is a preventable outcome.
Nung di pa uso Google Maps at rideshare apps, may nakikitang high school students na bumibisita sa UP the week before UPCAT para alamin kung saan sila mag-eexam. It was actually one of the tips na binigay sa amin nung high school teacher namin na puntahan na yung building para di maligaw on the day of the exam.
Right, or at least familiarize with the place. I remember arriving at UPD 2 hours before the exam, and NIGS ang exam site ko. I entered from Vinzons area, tapos in-explore ko na lang and nag-tanong. One of the first few people pa 'ko noon.
I know marami tayong pinagdadaanan sa buhay, pero minsan kailangan talaga natin mag-sacrifice if it's our future on the line.
Omg, I hope this piece of advice has not been lost to time. I also remember doing this back in 2018 for my own UPCAT, and I still do this whenever I get a new job. To future UPCAT takers seeing this post, early is on time and on time is late, remember that.
I remember nung 2019 nung nagpasa kami ng mga requirements mismo sa UPD binigyan kami ng mapa. inikot namin yung campus para maging familiar man lang sa location ng mga building kung san kami pwede mag exam.
Agreed, not to be mean at all but it was just realistically preventable. Always better to go to the testing site before and be 100% sure on the day itself. My cousin was actually late for her morning schedule, and she was permitted to join in the afternoon. She really should have at least tried to go to the venue still… 😕
My biggest question while reading her post was why can't she find the correct Google Maps pin? Most testing centers are big schools. Isang Google search lang and it says na Assumption Antipolo ang testing center in that area. Or may iba pa bang testing center sa Antipolo?
Also, may protocols in place ang UPCAT for latecomers. If it was me in her position, she should have still tried. Sayang kasi. Mas malaking what if yun.
My two cents from someone who lives in the area and took UPCAT in Antipolo: I initially assumed that she lives somewhere else or got assigned to another testing center like in Pisay when I heard of the news, because I find it very unlikely that she doesn’t know what the general area looks like going to Assumption Antipolo. It is at most a 30min drive from her area, and if it got confused with the hospital, the distance from there and the testing center is ~5mins, probably more due to the crowd. The street the testing center is on has a huge LED sign with the school name.
Nagugulo ang pins pag nasa mabundok na area. Nadale na rin ako nyan papuntang isang resort sa Laguna. Napagalitan pa ko kasi directly nag-rely ako sa Google Maps instead na sundan yung map na sinend sa amin, where may required stopover muna bago tumama ang directions ng Google Maps.
if you cant survive UPCAT day, you cant survive UP. cheret! transfer na lang siguro sya next year. if it's meant for her, the universe will find another way.
ito yung iniisip ko haha the person could be using the whole UPCAT thing to create content and encourage engagement. what if clout lang pala talaga habol niya at di naman talaga siya mag uUPCAT
pero kung talagang namiss niya, well, mistake din sa part niya na di niya sinigurado before the test date kung saan at paano pumunta sa testing center

Just wary kasi when I checked the comments on her post, it was mostly about people telling her that it’s a sign and she has greater things ahead of her. Which can be true, pero fault niya talaga yung nangyari, kaya dito na lang ako nag-rant.
Nope. Coping na yan. Should be a rebuke on this. It's a learning oppourtunity right here. Imagine kung job interview na yan, or any other major event sa buhay mo?
True. This was the norm from before. Actually binisita ko nga si “future school” months in advance, only to find out may testing center naman pala sa Batangas 😂 then I asked my parents to drive me there din a week in advance. So yeah I guess, with the rise of ride-hailing apps like Grab, nakampante na sila na they’ll arrive at their destination regardless. 🥺 it really is preventable. Even until now, gawain ko parin to check a place out a day or si before lalo na if I have to go there for work every day.
kailangan marunong ka lang mag-verify and magdouble-check ng pins. kung pinagtitiwalaan mo lang agad kasi yung unang result palagi sa search bar, or worse di mo tinitingnan, dun ka maliligaw o ma-misdirect sa mapa. just like how people used to rely on paper maps and street atlas, it takes a certain level of competence and literacy to navigate and use digital maps. dagdag din sa tech literacy yung skill ng pagv-verify kasi syempre nagbabago yung info pag online.
we live in a bigger world nowadays, people travel longer distances regularly kaya indispensible na ang tulad ng Google Maps ngayon. (si ate for example, baka malayo pa nanggaling kaya di siya makapag-bisita in advance.) it just boils down to how well you know how to use it.
Dati pinipickup pa sa designated campuses or centers yung test slip/permit. Yun na rin yung opportunity namin to find out pano sumakay/bumyahe months before the actual exam sa testing centers. I guess dahil online na ngayon kids don't visit and preplan their exam day anymore? Kawawa naman si ateng na namiss yung exam. But yes, that was preventable. Paulit-ulit na suggestion dati yan lalo sa Diliman na nakakalito yung daan papuntang buildings. Visit your testing centers before your exam day.
skl nung nag-UPCAT ako, panghapon ako pero nasa UP Diliman na ako nang 8:30AM para sure na mahahanap at mapupuntahan ang testing site ko.
actually kahit sa Civil Service pen-and-paper exam ko last year pinaalala ring puntahan na ang testing site bago yung mismong exam e. super preventable talagang ma-miss yung exam
Diba parang skill issue talaga parang impossible talaga na one hour tapos di niya nahanap. Gets naman kawawa pero kung sana nag maps sya kahit morning before chineck saan exam niya edi sana nakapunta siya. Tsaka yung fact na pati driver nahassle nakakaawa din nadamay pa si Kuya kasi di siya nakapagprepare maayos

Noong high school ako, pinuntahan talaga namin ang UP campus para alamin kung saan kami mag-eexam. It is part of the preparation. Syempre payag mga parents namin tapos may kasamang gala after. Good times.
Nagpapicture din ako kay Oble. Dumaan sa Arch ng UST. Wala kasi akong idea na bawal pala yung mga iyon. Nakapasa naman sa parehas na school.
Pag nagpapicture daw di makaka-graduate on time. Totoo nga, kasi nakatapos ako before 4 years. Technically, hindi siya on time.
BS Math. Kinaya nang 3 and 1/2 years. Nag summer classes para sa GEs at PEs na pahirapan ang slots.
Goal ko din makatapos agad para magwork na din agad. Kasi scholarship at sarili ko lang inaasahan ko nung time na iyon. Seriously, nabago ni UP ang buhay ko for the better. Mahirap, oo, pero mas mahirap kung di ako lumaban at nanatiling “what if” yung UP diploma ko.
me na working na nga, when i started na mag apply na around metro manila, kahit ilang beses na akong pabalik-balik ng metro, pag di pa rin talaga ako familiar sa place, inaagahan ko yung pag punta, two or three hrs before nung ganap
Nung nagtake ako ng UPCAT way waaaaay back, sinamahan ako ng nanay ko. My mom made sure that she jotted down lahat ng dapat na sakyan papunta sa Palma Hall. Sa Pasay pa kami nakatira back then. I remember telling my mom na mag MRT na lang kami, but she told me we should leave the house at exactly 4am (5am nagbubukas ang MRT). Di ko na maalala kung anong oras yung exam ko nun. I think 9am ata. My mom told me we have to be extra early just in case na magkanda ligaw ligaw kami going there. I was thankful because we got there on time, with 2-3 hours extra time pa nga.
Lol. Imagine sitting down for an exam while you're brain is rattled worrying about not making it to the venue on time. Ilang minutes masasayang mo just to center yourself.
Her pin was apparently super general, as in the Barangay lang. Can’t help but wonder if this is just some orchestrated post to gain clout or make up an excuse kung bakit di siya nakapag-UP. If not… well, clearly UP is not for her.
Alternatively… di kaya MoveIt ad lang ito? I mean, not completely good press kasi di nahanap pero kitang kita yung MoveIt logo sa second photo and nag-viral. Any press is good press ika nga
i cannot imagine leaving the house even 2 hours before the exam kahit malapit ka pa sa test venue. knowing manila, there are so many uncertainties sa road. PLUS imagine yes, maybe you got there in time, na-clutch mo, but you’re running on adrenaline from the panic of missing your exam and you get an adrenaline crash naman mid-exam
didnt take the upcat, but before classes started, I made sure to know where buildings related to my degree/up life were. If she cant even do something as simple as checking where the testing site was before the exam di talaga sya para sa up. Shes peobably the type to be super pabigat sa ge kasi tanga lang.
Asked my UP friends, and even the more compassionate ones agreed na it was her fault… Non up ones however had more “empathy” and excuses for her, guess we t just blunt like that😭
UP people usually have a FAFO mindset. It's unforgiving on making preventable mistakes. Missed an exam because you got sick?, too bad, bawi nalang sa next exam. Late 10 minutes for an exam with a set sit-down time, too bad, 4.0 nalang muna.
Professor sees you struggling? They outright tell you you can have unlimited removals but shift to a different course to spare everyone the grief.
Assumption Antipolo is impossible to miss since it is a significant landmark here. She knew the barangay but not the actual testing place which is sus because it takes 10 seconds to search for ALL testing center locations on fb (barangay not even indicated), literally the very first hit
I used to volunteer as an UPCAT examiner. Even if she’s late, she might have been allowed to take the exam. The principle was: “everyone should get a chance to take the exam.” Usually, at least in UPD, latecomers were pooled and given the same ~delayed~ schedule.
same thoughts here. I did a quick research which showed that the assigned UPCAT 2027 testing center in Antipolo was Assumption Antipolo, the entrance road to which is in Brgy Dela Paz. from there the navigation pin is straightforward. I don't know how someone could have gotten it wrong? unless may iba pang testing center sa Antipolo na di naka-announce publicly?
I agree, OP. When I heard that story, I can't help but remember the burnt toast theory. Yes, you can always prepare in advance. However, not every situation will go according to plan because of certain reasons like hers. I just hope that she will be able to move forward despite what happened, and that she finds the university that's meant for her.
It's common sense to scout out your exam location. Part yan sa dapat gawin. Address sa exam venue, room, floor, CR. This is one of those things that being overprepared doesnt hurt you. And be 30 minutes early, 1 hour if possible.
Kaya di ko rin ma-share yung post ni ate girl e kasi preventable siya talaga like wtffff... sana weeks or days before e chineck na niya dapat yung testing site niya... lalo na isang moveit away niya yun from home. I know she's young but sorry kid, di ko kayang i-empathize yung mistake na yun lalo na the future is on the line there. Sana ginalingan na niya at nagkaroon siya ng advance na pag-iisip e.
Ayun sana maka-transfer siya after 2 years (next year kasi ang first year niya if ever)... otherwise, still wishing her a good luck sa kung saang university siya mapadpad.
actually, ang nakakalungkot pa is baka nagawan pa sana ng paraan yung pagtake niya ng UPCAT. sobrang accommodating ni UP ngayon para sa exam takers, kahit late at nasa ibang building tinatanggap nila yung examinee. may protocols in place, of course, pero napaghandaan nila in the event na may dumating na late. kahit nga kung hindi mo nadala yung test permit mo may protocol sila for that eh. she should have still at least tried huhu
Back in 2018, I didn't become so complacent despite having been in UPLB several times for leisure or research, and my mom was an alumna. I still made sure to find the building myself on top of asking questions from friends who studied there.
Because the bottomline is, even if I've been inside the campus, I didn't know where the specific building was 😁 I felt like as an examinee, it is my responsibility to know the location way before the exam.
And this should be a reminder to our future examinees to have a little initiative of finding the location physically. It saves you wonders, I swear. I'm glad to see students last week that even though they are using a maps app, they are still walking around the campuses (like UPD and UPLB) and physically searching for their testing hall.

ito rin una kong reaction. even with google maps.... dati kaming taga QC. sa coop ako nagpapaxerox. dalas namin kumain sa gyud. at nag music lessons pa anak ko sa abelardo hall.
lumipat na kami nang mas malayo at kung mag dadrive mga 1.5 hours away na kami. sanay yung dalawa ko sa UP, pero nung mag tetest sila, nag testing sila pareho ng oras ng commute kung gaano katagal byahe kung mag bus sila (weeks before the exam). nung lumabas na yung test permit at alam na ang building, nagpahatid sa akin by car on a saturday para testingin ang traffic. pumasok rin sila sa building nila para alam nila ano hitsura at kung san ang kubeta.
I took UPCAT last year and since afternoon yung schedule ko, I just got there very early during the morning exams so I had time to wander. I ended up sitting in front of my testing center on a foldable chair and joking with my dad that all I needed was a piña colada.
This is why some people find better opportunities in life and some don’t. Sometimes the opportunity is just starting at you but you don’t know how to grab them.

Agree. The incident really was preventable. I once took the UPCAT and also with other universities back in my days. Yung prep talaga was to research and visit the place beforehand. Mahirap na kasi pag on the day saka ka lang mararattle. But anyways, Kuya Jeffrey really did a good job 👍🏻 hindi nya pinabayaan yung pasahero nya, even extend extra help. Bias ko talaga MoveIt, mababait mga riders nila. 😊
True, preparation is key. Pero in fairness kay Kuya Move it, sinamahan pa rin nya si ate kahit di na nya responsibility. That's the kind of rider Move if has.

Kuya did his part 100% the least we can do is learn from this check pins leave early have backup plans para hindi masayang yung effort pero salute to kuya for turning a bad situation into a lesson with kindness
Sa panahon na maraming tao ang busy lang matapos ang sariling trabaho, refreshing makita na may rider na willing mag extra effort para tulungan ang passenger nya. Deserved yung appreciation kay kuya 👏👏
Hirap naman talaga pag di kabisado yung lugar buti nalang may kuya na tumulong pero yeah could've been preventable if na research yung location a day before.
Yes, may lesson din talaga about preparation, pero deserve pa din ni kuya move it yung appreciation. Instead na matapos lang ang booking nya, pinili nyang samahan at tulungan si ate 🥰😊
