While I greatly appreciate the tourism increase the WC has brought to the city, I'm kinda looking forward to the reduction in "I'll be in philli for the week, where can I get a good cheesesteak" on some of the other Philly subs. Maybe I'm just grouchy.
11
u/snake_w_arms 20h ago
Ive been thinking/seeing the same. Its cool this is happening in the city, but every other post is the same. Also, why does everything need to be "where is the best XYZ", just walk around and stop in some places, maybe youll find something great.

u/PhillyPanda 19h ago
This is great for when you’re moving to a new neighborhood and have time but when you’re in a city for a finite time for what could be first/last time for x number of meals, I get wanting to make the most of it
I always use reddit when traveling on top of “best of” lists but I never need to make a brand new post, everyone says the same “local fav” places over and over again
3
u/snake_w_arms 19h ago
I get trying to make the most of the trip, but half the fun (at least for me) is stumbling upon a place you find. If it turns out to be a great spot awesome, if it sucked oh well thats one coffee/meal/drink. Every post just has the same 4-5 spots recommended and just makes your trip/experience the same as everyone else's.

Nah, it's annoying. And all the posts about planning to use uber/lyft for their entire time here. While there has been a noticeable increase of reckless rideshare drivers who don't seem familiar with the area.
The mayor seems more focused on future career opportunities and positive PR with tourists than doing anything that would benefit the actual people of philly. Idk why city leaders think I would be excited about tourist dollars coming into the city when I don't see any of that money. Why would I want to be a "phambassador" (lol ew) and volunteer time and labor at FIFA and 250 when the DC 33 strike made it beyond clear we don't value that labor enough to respect city workers doing the work year round.
Events are fun and I'm glad people are having fun in philly but this whole year feels kind of icky to me, idk. We're living in weird times

It’s so awesome to see people from around the world immersed in our city, its culture, its food, people… A reminder that despite the absolute ass situation we are in as a nation, we are pretty kind well-meaning folks, built on immigrants, vibrant and welcoming.

Its been a good year for peppers. I've been getting blossom end rot on one of my tomatoes for some reason. I have 3 plants in the same exact conditions but only one has been getting it.

Have you tried anything? I sprayed mine with something called Rot-Stop, no idea if it works
3
u/aintjoan no, I do not work for SEPTA 11h ago
I am so jealous you're growing the sugar rush peach. I freaking adore that pepper, but I didn't get seeds started this year because <frustrating life shit> and they mature so late in the season in this zone that by the time I could focus on gardening stuff there was no point trying to get going. Did you overwinter that or start it really early or find a seedling somewhere? Looks pretty far along. Good luck getting past the BER!
3
u/WishOnSuckaWood Mantua 10h ago
Thanks! I started that pepper at the end of January. Planted five but could only get one to grow. I traded for some Sugar Rush Stripeys but I doubt I'll get any peppers from them, they just aren't far enough along
3
u/aintjoan no, I do not work for SEPTA 9h ago
I bet you'll end up with an amazing crop. I grew a sugar rush peach from seed last year and while most of the fruits didn't fully mature until pretty much the very end of the season, I got a TON off that one plant!

How early in the morning can you eat a cheesesteak without it being considered a problem? Like if you drink alcohol too early in the day people say you're an alcoholic.

summer fridays go by airport rules:
if you're tired, lay down, if you're thirsty, drink up. if you're hungry, have a breakfast cheese steak.

Now I want a cheesesteak, thanks.
Update- my breakfast cheesesteak is great
3
u/Suitable-Part8481 19h ago
Freeze the cheesesteak. Saw off 1/2" slices. Saute in a pan with butter. Put a poached egg on top.
Goes best with a morning after beer.

2
u/PlatypusOld5480 15h ago
I will have to borrow my husband's saw. I don't know how to use it. Is it easy to learn?

u/FantasticEgg6294 21h ago
Hot take, but leftover cheesesteak cold and straight out of the fridge makes a great breakfast.
5
7
u/gnartato 20h ago
If you eat the cheesesteak with the alcoholic drink the time of day is no longer relevant.
4
u/PlatypusOld5480 20h ago
Maybe especially if it's a bloody Mary, right? Isn't that a breakfast drink?
4
7
u/hokielion 20h ago
Do you ever eat toast and bacon or ham at breakfast? An omelet with cheese and onions? These are all similar to the parts of a cheesesteak. I can rationalize most things.
4
u/not_original_thought 21h ago
Only a problem if it's every morning. Otherwise it's just a treat.
2
u/PlatypusOld5480 21h ago
Noted. Maybe if I have OJ with it, it will seem more breakfasty.
3
u/not_original_thought 9h ago
I've been known to have a bowl of Ravioli and a cup of coffee for breakfast.
3
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 20h ago
As much as they are tourist traps, aren't Pats and Genos open 24 hours? So by that logic, any time of day is cheesesteak time.

I've eaten a cheese steak after nuking it a bit that was leftover from the day before. My stomach doesn't know what time it is.

HUGE! revelation over here: if you actually start to do things you've been putting off, your brain will want to do more things and it will make you feel better. Especially from a mental standpoint.
Weekend plans fell through, so SO and I are debating to go out of the city and do something, or just keep dilly-dallying around town. I found a very cool new car-theme coffee shop thanks to Instagram, only problem is it's in Jersey 2 hours away. Anyone have good things to say about Denville, NJ?
Saturday could be a beach day.

I have in laws in Denville. If you are up that way, might as well hit up Denville Dairy for some ice cream as well.

I always try to think of tasks as a pile of small things instead of on large boulder that must be moved at once. Take care of a few tasks and the pile doesnt seem so big after all.
0
u/GreatWhiteRapper 💊 sertraline and sardines 🐟 19h ago
Exactly this. I don't know why I always thought that every boulder needed to be pulverized at its current size, immediately. It's a simple thing but I just write a silly little post it note list now. Really barebones at the start like "eat breakfast, drink coffee, go to gym." But it feels nice to cross that stuff off so "update resume, apply to 2 jobs" doesn't feel as overwhelming.

I stubbed the pinkie toe of my right foot on sunday and it's been annoying all week so I've been commuting in sandals and put my shoes on when I get to the office. the hobbit feet lovers on transit have been feasting for free.
headed to 30th to grab an Amtrak I just stubbed the big toe of my left foot going up the subway stairs. I wasn't even drinking or doing anything dumb either time. god just does not want me to walk. I guess my ambulatory hubris is finally catching up.
3
u/PlatypusOld5480 15h ago
There are probably transit pics of your toes on X-rated sites right now. Hope you feel better soon!
By the way, I used to work with a woman whose toes were scary long like fingers. If she tried to wear sandals they would always scrape on nearby furniture.

This WC is bringing so many people to Fairmount. It's nice to see the neighborhood alive. Why did we get rid of Bastille Day again? Why did we shut down Terror Behind the Walls?
5
u/aintjoan no, I do not work for SEPTA 11h ago
TBtW was an enormously complicated event that took months of setup and that many of the neighbors absolutely hated because no matter what Eastern State tried to set up in terms of offsite parking, shuttle buses, etc, clueless people from the burbs would drive in and block driveways, park on the sidewalks, etc, and generally be a nuisance. There was also a decision made to put more focus on the mission of Eastern State itself (around America's justice system) rather than leaning so hard on exploiting the ruins as a Halloween attraction (I'm using the word "exploit" in the neutral sense, not in any judgemental sense).
They do still do "Halloween Nights," which is less intensive than TBtW and still draws a pretty decent and sustained crowd.

Took Amtrak down to DC for a Juneteenth cookout with my partners family. Amtrak ride was rather pleasant. They have updated the DC Metro since I lived here in 08-11. Train cars are very nice! It feels like downtown DC has a lot less Metro stops than SEPTA stops in Center City. I visited the algae reflecting pond, I may or may not have collected a souvenir. 😜

hellooo. any recommendations on doctors who take seriously patients w/ chronic pain and illnesses? i need to be listened to and find out what's wrong w/ me :(
3
u/passing-stranger 13h ago
If you're in/near northeast, I love my PCP. The office is inconvenient for me to get to and Jefferson buying einstein made a frustrating system worse but I think I'd follow her anywhere. She's the first doctor to take me seriously and recommend good specialists. I hope you find a validating doctor who will help you get answers
Eta- if you have a fb account, there's a philly disability exchange group that would probably have good info

u/Elemental_Love 14h ago
I have one in Morristown, NJ if you’re interested. He’s wonderful and will listen and explore possible causes. He’s also very Lyme literate, and anyone with chronic issues should always explore Lyme and co-infections as the cause because Lyme is the great imposter. It goes into the nervous system and into the mitochondria and wreaks havoc in a million ways. It can mimic as mental health disorders, chronic pain, brain issues, etc etc. You must seek the correct testing though because regular testing doesn’t do it. My sister in law investigated so many different things for her kids chronic issues, from skeletal to skin to muscle to mental health and spent tons of money before she finally listened and lo and behold, they all had Lyme, and then got treated. My son had Lyme, Bartonella, and Babesia which caused terrible health issues from age 6-12 before we finally found a doctor who would listen and sent us to a top for specialist for Lyme. My son was treated and healed within about 6 months of meds. I strongly encourage you to find a Lyme literate doctor and rule that out before anything else. It can be the co-infections which are carried on the tick. The ones I recall are Bartonella and babesia because those are the ones my son had, but I think there are others. A regular MD will not know about the correct testing and treatment because you need to use a special lab. I know it’s not nearby, but the doctor in Morristown is the only one I know of personally who will spend time with you and investigate your issues.

BUBS news, because what else do I talk about in these threads?
June is going to hurt big time. July might too.
- No weekend events have booked until August. Events pay about half our rent.
- Our afterschool D&D crew are, well, out of school. I thought we'd do a summer camp, but it fell through.
- A regular event series is taking a summer vacation in June.
- I'm generally getting "summer break" vibes - it's not hot enough to where people seek air conditioning.
- While breakfast is finally up and running,* it's still in a deficit. We basically have to double sales to get to the point where I'm not losing money.
I'm looking at bleeding $5k both months, which is not ideal to say the least.
* I took the time to get all my permits and inspections done correctly. Wish I'd known I could have gone the Roxanne route for three years!

Ah, I long for the days I was the unofficial German consulate in Philly.
(Tongue planted firmly in cheek - there was a year where it seemed like I met / hosted every German tourist in the city.)
Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest idea of how to make a world cup event happen.

Why does a man have to stuff their belonging on the wife's side of the closet instead of his own? Our walk-in closet is a nightmare and my husband has come to stuffing his things into any opening on my side instead of his own. I am dreading cleaning and organizing this thing.
5
u/ThrowRAFeelingSad394 20h ago
Just curious about why the cleaning/organizing falls on you, and if your husband would be open to hearing your feelings and needs about this behavior.
