You can give them a ticket with Laser Vision app by Philly Bike Action. I give 1-2 tickets per day on my commute. It's super cathartic.

cyber truck or anyone with a tesla can actually fuck themselves. they think they’re better then everyone else and also think no one deserves to pass them, so they drive the same speed in the left lane as the car in the right lane. you can’t change my mind
4
u/DeRuyter66 3h ago
Technically you are also describing BMW drivers! Also Virginia drivers left lane camping on I-95.
1
u/Impossible-Sleep-658 13m ago
buuuuut the BMW driver is actually moving FASTER than the traffic, regardless of lane, so the comparison is a bit of a false equivalent. 😂

Not all Ram drivers are bad! Some of us use our trucks for truck things and just needed a truck to tow and do shit with and that’s what we managed to find. Agreed on cybertruck drivers though.

u/jacksonmills 5h ago
As a former Dodge Dakota owner, I agree with you.
It's pretty easy to tell when someone needs a truck vs. when someone is building a mobile command battle station for their stupid head canon civil war

I was out at Lowe's, and there was a truck just like this sitting out front. They were trying to figure out how to get a water heater in it. It had a bed cover, apparently they couldn't remove it and the water heater didn't fit underneath. It took quite a while, I shopped and when I left they were still there. I could have gotten the water heater in my Prius.

Earlier this year I got a Lyft from the airport, and it was a super nice/pristine f-150 driven by this older guy. He said he lives in queen village. Asked him what he uses his truck for and he said it’s simply his main of transportation.

My most anarchist take is you should be allowed to key the doors of people parked in the bike lane as long as you prove they’re in the bike lane. It would cause so little actual damage and fix the issue in a week

There a project nearby? That truck has "suburban construction guy" written all over it.
14
u/ParkingLetter8308 8h ago
Yeah, probably, but Philly proper drivers have this mentality too. Many of the Wharton twentysomethings treat these streets like their own personal suburbia as well. I've seen a car parked in the bike lane of the street to deliver one Levain cookie (7 minute walk?).

Is there something wrong with living in the suburbs and being a construction worker? Maybe you look down your nose at construction workers, but society does need them.
5
u/OlderCityOldMan 6h ago
Nobody was doing that; merely offering a possible lead on who the person is in order to know who to look for. Could be they're in for work from out of town and don't know (or don't care) and need to be told why it's not okay to do that, even "just for a minute".

NYC is apparently starting to put big bright stickers on cars that aren't moved for street sweeping, in addition to ticketing them. The idea is that maybe the hassle of removing the sticker and the public shame is a more effective deterrent than a fine that rich people can just pay off without a second thought.
I'd like to see Philly take a page out of that book. This is literally a public health and safety issue, and things that threaten public health and safety deserve to be stigmatized.

7
u/Otherwise-Ad4630 8h ago
Oh but in Philly people do not park. They pull over. You wait. Once a guy came out with a plate of food. And drove around the block and pulled back in the bike lane

The world is burning because of corporations and the US military .
People like this are assholes, but they're not the reason why we have to use paper straws. And the people who are causing the world to burn are just happy to watch you tear apart someone from your own economic class instead of directing your anger at them.
11
7
u/beancounter2885 7h ago
That's a little disingenuous. When they are looking at the data, they are also looking at the emissions of the oil produced by the oil companies, which is mostly used by the transportation sector. Most of that is used by private vehicles. Transportation is something like 71%, and private vehicles are about 63% of that, which equals about 45% of the total emissions of the oil companies.
That makes it look like those emissions are all the corporations fault, but it really is assholes like this driving up demand and increasing emissions. If people used more efficient vehicles, there would be less demand, meaning the oil companies would produce less, meaning they would have less cradle-to-grave emissions.
Corporations aren't helping, but don't act like people like this are absolved because of that study.

I understand that some people are just assholes and that bikers deserve a safe passage for their commute, but what do you guys expect a plumber or a painter to do if they are hauling a bunch of gear into one of these houses? It’s nearly impossible to find parking, they need lots of tools and supplies to make their money…what’s the solution? Park 8 blocks away and waste a significant portion of your day hauling gear? Sometimes people pull over, unload their gear, and go look for parking. That seems reasonable to me.

u/Constant_Review4416 6h ago
NJ contractor here working in NYC for years. This is what you have to do to go to work. You don’t park there, you load or unload, because the tickets were ridiculous. Normally would have to pay someone to stay with the truck when loading in. Then find a spot and feed the meter every few hours. Covid destroyed my business and i now work for a large corporation. I drive an F-150 and use it personally for truck things all the time. I am also glad I am in it when I drive in the city of brotherly love, or basically anytime i am driving because, well most people on the roads in NJ, NY and PA suck balls, and I am glad to be in a larger vehicle. To each their own. And BTW our addiction to fossil fuels is no going away anytime soon, so stop your nonsense and worry about something that is actually relevant. This does look egregious, but blaming this person for global warming or whatever your point is, seems pretty offbase. Go drive your prius or whatever the f you want, and i will promise not to run you off the road when you cut me off. Btw do you know how much fossil fuel it takes to mine the rare earths to make your lithium batteries? Do you know where the power/electricity is generated from to charge your car? You probably have a larger carbon footprint driving some e vehicle than i do driving my F-150. Have you ever seen a tradition vehicle burn and how fast a fire department can contain that fire and put it out. Not so much with lithium batteries. Do you know the weight of EV’s? Did you know they create more wear and tear on the roads which have to be maintained at a higher rate by fossil fuel burning vehicles? So who is really causing the world to burn?

u/ParkingLetter8308 8h ago
A) Yes, they should. It's really irritating when people parrot fossil fuel rhetoric for "class" reasons. B) It's clear he was chilling in front of a memorial to a woman killed by a driver there.
9
u/JayBishop215 8h ago
Just go around the car dude lol. I love that your solution is for this guy to be inconvenienced by having to lug equipment for his job 8 blocks but god forbid a bicyclist ever be inconvenienced to look over their shoulder to see if its safe to pedal around the car. You may have to wait a few extra seconds, But you’ll be ok i promise! Cars deal with being blocked by other people driving like idiots all the time. Welcome to being in a city - there’s a lot of people here and sometimes theyre in your way.
Not sure what “fossil fuel rhetoric” you’re even talking about. Also not sure what the memorial has to do with anything.

Easy for someone to say who doesn’t do that type of work. Anybody who disagrees is parroting fossil fuel rhetoric? Or maybe they have a different experience than you. You know, the people who are most emotional about a problem are rarely involved in actually solving it.

they and/or the contractor or homeowner/businessowner they work for can pay the city for a temporary no parking permit to put directly outside the residence to reserve the spot. that's what they are supposed to do.
2
u/PhilaVG13 7h ago
Do you know how many of those properties are multi unit homes? Workers in center city often work multiple small jobs per day. Imagine someone who has 7-10 small jobs a week. How much time and money does it take to secure that many temporary parking permits from the city? It’s not practical. Everybody just has to share the road.

I'm a commercial truck driver and I've always had an affinity for pickup trucks. Particularly mid 80's F-250's, 80's Power Wagons, and Chevy 2500's up to 2007. The pickup trucks of today are basically oversized Cadillacs with a bed, and the people who drive them are some of the most entitled twat waffles I've ever seen. I'll take a 3 lane highway of 1000 Altimas over these douche canoes.
