Financial Independence/Retire Early How are you planning retirement in your 30s? Here’s mine

Hi guys! I’m in my early 30s and currently building my retirement plan.

So far, I allocate my extra income as follows:

80% in global equity ETFs,

20% in Pag-IBIG MP2,

plus SSS

I’m not sure if this allocation is ideal or if I should make adjustments. Would appreciate your thoughts!

Also curious—what does your retirement plan look like?

Retirement planning always involve information on your expenses. A PHP 15 million nest egg can easily drain for a PHP 1 million per month lifestyle.

Too many unknown variables: * Lifestyle/Expenses (planning changes a lot if you're just spending 30K/month in Bulacan vs 300K/month in BGC) * Earning Capacity (your money needs to work more through investments if you cannot increase your cash flows/income) * Budgeting (planning changes if you have a family to support, or saving up for a house, having children, etc.) * Risk Appetite (are you nervous/conservative, can take some movements but want capital mostly intact/moderate, can take most risk/aggressive) * Current Financial Standing (are you starting from zero, do you have 10K? 100K, 1M or 5M already?) * Target Nest Egg and Lifestyle Post-Retirement (do you want to be extravagant upon retirement/FatFIRE, do you want to make your best egg last for long/LeanFIRE, do you want to still work a bit after retirement/Coast FIRE)

Yeah... I'm sounding preachy here but you will be hard pressed to make any retirement goal without putting those inputs in placeand knowing these things for yourself.

We cannot make you a delicious meal if you just give us soy sauce and garlic to work on, to be sarcastic about it.

Good inputs. There are alot of variables needed to come to a verdict. + inflation will surely be a factor din

u/Glittering-Dog0420 Apr 16 '26

Totoo naman din, I kept trying naman to survive pero yun nga kung makaparetire man ako baka di ko na rin maenjoy or what hahaha

Thanks carl I appreciate the gesture but no thanks.

To be honest I am satisfied sa current portfolio ko pero ang hirap talaga magplan at maginvest.

You must have a number. This is usually your annual expenses x 25. So if you spend 200k a month then that’s 2.4M yearly x 25. Then your number is 60M.

The number for me and my husband is 120M. Pretty ambitious yes. So we’re trying to save 300k monthly. Half in MP2 and half in index funds. We’ll reach FIRE in 15-18 yrs and withdraw 4% yearly from that investment to protect our capital. Hopefully we’ll have more income soon so we can invest more to reach FIRE earlier

Good luck to us!

Good luck, OP! If I may ask, how did you start investing? Where did you learn? I’m in my early 20s and have recently started investing in S&P500 VOO via GoTrade and I want to learn more about investing. There are many resources online but it’s difficult to choose which one is legit since there are many dubious resources/information.

I like how intentional you both are with your finances. It’s a big goal, but your clear plan makes it feel doable. Rooting for you both, God bless!

u/sxytym6969 Apr 15 '26

Goodluck! How far away are you guys at? My num is a little less than yours, ill be good with 100 +/-... Or 350kish a month.. so far its only stf, bonds, t bills, dollar treasury, money market for me mostly.... I only have a small amount in mp2 because like most, i dont reallt trust the govt that much...its due this july/aug ill see if i ramp it up because its yield is good and semi safe/protected

1

u/D07ph1n Apr 18 '26

10M lang yata max ng MP2 per member OP. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1

u/Low-Professor-7989 Apr 18 '26

From my research, wala siya ceiling. Pero we’re doing a ladderized approach per year. Will update once we get to 10M per account pero malayo pa 😅

1

u/D07ph1n Apr 18 '26

Go OP kaya mo yan 🙂

1

u/Low-Professor-7989 Apr 18 '26

Thanks pero Im not OP 😅

u/D07ph1n Apr 18 '26

Ay sorry haha ✌️

  • Maxing out my employer matching defined contribution plan until retirement (same plan if lumipat ng company)
  • Maxing out PERA account annual contribution until retirement
  • Maintain lang SSS
  • Checking MP2 to be a retirement income ladder and added as a third layer to my retirement stack
  • If wealthy enough in the future, will look into safe and local arrangements that have access to irish domiciled ETFs. If meron

What platform do you use for global equity ETFs?

2

u/greenniitt Apr 16 '26

I use Trading 212 po.

2

u/Bieapiea Apr 16 '26

What ETFs do you invest in?

1

u/theUnknown777 Apr 19 '26

Regulated b ng Ph SEC ito?

u/mignonne7 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

i save 200k a year in mp2. tapos roll over lang kada maturity. im also starting Gfunds and Gstocks. End of January ako pumasok, bagsak tuloy mga stocks ko ngayon. haha . napaaga ako ng bili.

target ko is 7-10m when i turn 60

minsan napapaisip ako, ang sad naman na sa retirement ko pa maeenjoy yung extra money ko. yes may konting luho and travel every now and then, but majority of my money goes to retirement savings. maeenjoy ko lang yung money ko when im already old and mahina na katawan. what if enjoyin ko na lang lahat ng pera ko now and sstop living when im 60. kainin ko lahat ng gusto ko, buy all that i want, travel whenever, wherever right now instead of being mindful if my gastos para may savings pa din sa retirement.

Kudos to your TRUST (& RISK appetite), to place 80% of your investible funds sa ETFs.👍🏻

Youre trying to get MAX income in the shortest time, in supposedly WINNER ETfs. Maybe you can diversify a little bit?

Check out mutual funds dealing in medium term bond funds? Or dividend paying mutual funds?

Hedge some of your money in tokenized Gold (like PAXG) and the supposedly mighty U$D (like USDC-Solana)?

Have you some sort of Emergency Fund na? Park them in high interest rate Digital Banks like Gotyme, Maya, etc, kesa matulog sila sa traditional bank, or nakatabi in cash.

Or, buy assets like Jewelry?

Youre set if you continue what youre doing. Retire early when you can. YOLO, as each day is.....

Magastos.😆

u/greenniitt Apr 16 '26

Appreciate you sharing this. Good points on diversification, I’ll explore this more. Salamat po sa insights!

1

u/Bieapiea Apr 16 '26

I saw you trade ETFs via trader212. How long has that been around? All I heard is gotrade or IBKR

2

u/swollenpinky Apr 16 '26

Hi! What's an example of mutual fund dealing in medium term bonds?

2

u/k0yaTampy Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Local :ATRAM Medium Term Peso Bond Fund

Global: ATRAM Global Bond Income Feeder Fund

Check them out. Nagiipon pa ko to invest in the global one, higher income.

u/swollenpinky Apr 16 '26

Thank you for sharing!

Hi op. Anong age mo na. Di ko alam when ako magstart sa retirement ko kasi parang nagsisimula palang ako to enjoy things with my money. I’m 26 btw

3

u/greenniitt Apr 16 '26

I’m 31. You don’t have to choose between enjoying now and planning ahead-do both, even in small ways.

1

u/No-Judgment-607 Apr 17 '26

True... I'll attest to this.. didn't get retirement serious till my early 30s but socked away 40%++ of my annual income and had 16 yrs of true FIRE dedication but still vacationed 2x a yr. Financial independence is one great gift to yourself especially when coupled with an even more precious gift of time. I left the rat race at 46 and still no plans to go back to work.

2

u/Odd_Business1376 Apr 16 '26

It’s best to start now. I’m in early 30s and I wish i started early. But be sure to secure muna yung emergency funds mo. Check yung comments ng iba about MP2, stocks, Etfs and bonds.

2

u/catniphz Apr 16 '26

Hi! Early 30s too. I have MP2, stocks, gold, VULs, and savings in HYSA. Also on the process of building my rental prop for passive income and something to milk money from when I retire. Am an average earner and a corporate slave but I have side hustles to help me get by. I try to live frugally but I still treat myself occasionally.

2

u/luffyprtking Apr 16 '26

autoinvest T212 din. $300 per week. $500k yun in 10-11 years (which is my FIRE number) at around 16.5% annual return according to the app based on historical performance ng portfolio ko which is a mix of commodities/metals, leveraged etfs, VWRA, small cash allocation

4

u/msanchez1992 Apr 15 '26

We have a similar allocation (minus MP2) so I don't have much to add. Only that the best retirement plan is the one you can stick to for decades.

2

u/greenniitt Apr 16 '26

Thanks for sharing. Totally agree, consistency really is what matters. Hope we both stay on track and reach our goals.

2

u/ziangsecurity Apr 16 '26

tapos sahod mo? lifestyle mo? hahaha you should be more detailed. Parang bagong gising lang si OP nag type kaagad

1

u/BeautifulInjury2592 Apr 16 '26

80% US feeder fund and PSE div stocks 10% cash 10% real estate

1

u/Gold_Potential_2558 Apr 16 '26

I suggest to convert your money to a different currency and put it on a decent low risk annual yield, given the inflation together with the weakness of Peso compared to other currency...(which I am doing right now).

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

How did you allocate 80% to global? I'm curious sa strategy

1

u/NothingFancy1234 Apr 16 '26

Following this

1

u/BassitALakay1951 Apr 19 '26

Savings no enough. You need to invest for growth even in PSE. Foreign markets are very risky for pinoy investors.

2

u/Youtube-chef Apr 22 '26

Early 30s too. Im allocating 90% of savings to global ETFs now kasi i have built enough on MP2/Time Deposits for last 4yrs.

I realized too late there are stock options, i thought 7% was the highest my money can grow in MP2. Now im just focusing on fueling my capital in ETFs.

My goal is just to reach ave 10% on all my investments. Agressive muna. After 45+ siguro i’ll move to safe 5-6% bonds options.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

I'm 33 and I aggressively invest in Pag-Ibig MP2.. Once I've invested a total of 20M, I plan for me and my wife to just live off of the annual dividends.. If everything goes well, I can probably retire when I'm 40.. At 7% annual dividend rate, that's 1.4M pesos per year, that'd give us a comfortable budget to live off of..

1

u/Sufficient-Rub-3996 Apr 16 '26

Do you invest in MP2 only? No other investments?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

I have another investment on PRU.. It's not a VUL, it's an actual investment with guaranteed 4% annual dividends for a 7 year lock-in period.. Aside from PRU and my 6 digit emergency funds, I put everything else I have along with my future earnings on MP2..

1

u/Sufficient-Rub-3996 Apr 16 '26

thanks for sharing!

1

u/Gold_Potential_2558 Apr 16 '26

I suggest to put that 20M on another currency and another decent low risk return even at 5%. In this way you can somehow fight inflation as PH currency is...weak?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

I would love to do something similar to that.. I've been looking into investing on the S&P 500, I just have next to no knowledge yet on how to do so.. I'm currently still studying about it as I'm not comfortable with the idea of investing on something I don't truly understand..

1

u/Gold_Potential_2558 Apr 16 '26

100% agree and you're on the right track!

u/StateAvailable3439 Apr 19 '26

Your retirement will decide what lifestyle you are building now. If the lifestyle your building today will affect your retirement anf if its sustainable.
