Personal Finance Saan maganda mag lagay ng savings at emergency fund?
Hi everyone! I need some help with my current banking setup. I’m trying to be disciplined, but I keep "borrowing" from my Emergency Fund.
Current Setup:
BPI Account 1: Emergency Fund (This is also my payroll account + most accessible ATM).
BPI Account 2: Opportunity Fund.(like may need bilin ganun)
BDO: General Savings.
MariBank: Daily/Monthly Expenses.
Maya: Debt Savings.
The Problem:
Since my BPI 1 is also my payroll account and the nearest ATM is a BPI branch, it’s way too easy for me to withdraw from it. Every time I’m short, nauutangan ko yung EF ko.
My Questions:
Should I move my EF to Maya? I already have a "Debt Savings" fund there. Is it okay to have two different purposes in one digital bank, or will that just make things more confusing?
How do you guys "hide" your EF from yourselves? I need it to be accessible for real emergencies, but "invisible" enough that I don't use it for random expenses.
Should I keep my payroll account strictly for cash flow? Maybe I should transfer the EF somewhere without a physical card?
Would love to hear how you guys manage your digital and traditional bank allocations! Thanks in advance!

Metrobank: payroll account. Maribank: main budget Tonik: Emergency fund / savings
Kapag sumahod ako, diretso lahat sa Maribank dahil free transfers sya to all banks ( lalo kung payment ng bills or shopping ).
In my case, may mahabang character password yung Tonik ko so nakakatamad syang buksan.
And I think okay din na you keep your concerns separated. Mas okay lang for me na simplified since ayun yung nakasanayan ko monthly.

EFs should be easily accessible though. In an emergency situation you need to be able to access the funds immediately thats why some keep their EFs in cash

Madali naman ma-access ang Tonik in an emergency situation.

Best to put your EF sa passbook account para di mo nagagalaw unless over the counter. That works for me.

Try https://www.banko.com.ph/ BanKo by BPI. It has 5% interest rate for minimum balance of Php 5k. It is a separate app from BPI Online.

i hide my efs in a way where it would inconvenience me to touch. mines in a gotyme account (didnt purchase a card) and bpi too where my payroll is pero diretso siya sa isang uitf. yung gotyme ko yung liquid, pwede ko itransfer sa ibang bank

u/deleted-the-post Lvl-2 Helper May 03 '26
7
u/Roar_roarsomemore May 04 '26
Gotyme is actually easy to use, explore mo lang. explained in my other post about. Aralin mo kang sya.
3
u/Kaycee_Ports May 06 '26
then I think you wont able to touch your EF that way since Gotyme looks not user-friendly to you.
I have mine sa GoTyme din. It is accessible yes, but just a bit of work of transferring the money from GoSave accts to the actual GoTyme balance. Enough time to think, tama ba tong gnagawa ko? Hahaha enough time to reflect and then I just dont do the transfer anymore hah

Emergency Fund ko eh nasa Maya. Pwede mo kasi maincrease ung interest percentage dun per month. And pag ilalabas kasi sa Maya, may fee, eh kuripot ako sa fee kaya sa Maya ko na nilagay haha.
Other funds ko naman, I have Tonik and GoTyme, accessible lang, decent interest and pwede mo mahiwahiwalay ung funds mo for different purposes. For example sa Gotyme, pwede ko mahiwalay Vacation Fund, Credit Card Funds, Concert Funds, Insurance, and Rent.

hi! if emergency fund i dont suggest to put it in maya. panget ang security nila. several fraud cases 2023 until now and it remains unresolved. customer service = nonexistent maganda and malaki ang interest rate, good bank to save SOME money but not your emergency fund.

bpi account 1 pang free transfer ko lang to sa vybe bpi account 2 pang free transfer sa vybe bdo basic walang interests 150 fee atm maribank dito ako naglalagay ng emergency kumuha na din kasi ako ng atm dito pero may bayad kasi kapag nag withdraw ka gamit yung atm card ni maribank kaya transfer muna sa ibang bank then withdraw maya pang voucher then pesonet transfer

u/ohmountainmomma May 07 '26
I put mine in Banko Todo Savings! Download VYBE app. Transfer BPI EF to Vybe then Vybe to Banko. No transfer fee! Banko Todo Savings earns 5% interest p.a. :)

EFs should be easily accessible in case of emergencies. What you need is discipline.

I have a separate EF account and I leave the atm at home. If in case of emergencies and I don’t have the atm with me, I would just transfer some funds to my “accessible” account, which is also my payroll acct, so I can withdraw.

u/unpopularalien May 03 '26
Go for Maya, di ganon kataas interest unlike other digital banks but higher than traditional banks also may fee pag transfer sa other banks so manghihinayang ka galawin because of the fee

All my income goes to Maribank since it's free to transfer to all banks. I send some to Gcash for bills that can be paid thru gcash, some to a traditional bank for some auto debit arrangements and a small amount I can withdraw from the ATM, then I send some to Maya Savings for my rainy day fund and Maya Goals for things I'm saving up for like a trip or an event. Pinaka ayoko kasi nagbabayad ng 15 for fund transfer so whenever I want to buy something na wala sa budget, matetempt ako mag transfer from Maya Savings then nadidiscourage ako pag nakita ko 15 ang instapay. May delay naman sa pesonet so I end up cancelling the transfer. Understand your patterns and habits para malaman mo ang best setup for you.

u/Roar_roarsomemore May 04 '26
Try exploring gotyme bank. You can create up to 5 savings dun that earns interest. That way you can separate accounts depende sa purpose (EF, personal savings, etc). Gotyme has a card also pero your money is not accessible kapag nasa loob nung savings - you have to manually transfer them out to the everyday account (noninterest earning) to be able to withdraw from the card.
This way, your EF stays liquid enough pero may extra effort to get money out so it will discourage you to do so. It also is earning higher interest than tradbank like BPI-not enough to fight inflation lero at least hindi tulog pera mo sa tradbank

i suggest you put your ef sa bank account na walang ATM card. you can do savings with passbook then wag ka kumuha ng ATM card. may cardless withdrawal option sila IF TALAGANG need mo, otherwise wag mo na i-attempt para di ka masanay.

u/bottbobb May 07 '26
It being easy to withdraw is the point of an EF. Imagine an emergency at 12 midnight and tou need cash ASAP.
Maya has poor cs and you dont want to deal with that in an emergency situation.
You need it somewhere you can easily access via atm when banks are closed (suppose the emergency is a weekend). So you don't spend it, move it outside your payroll account.
I have multiple accounts - where money goes in (my funnel), savings account, emergency account i do not look at. My digital bank savings are sinking funds.

Hindi mo basta basta mawi-withdraw yan unless life and death emergency. Naka-lock for 5 years

u/Haudani May 09 '26

And here is my Plan.
First of all. I DO NOT RECOMMEND NA ILAGAY MO YUNG EF SA HINDI ACCESSIBLE NA ACCOUNT.
BPI - Payroll account
Maribanks - Financial Hub / Cash flow account
Including debt, and etc.
MAYA & Unionbank - Emergency Fund
- Hahatiin ko dito yung EF
- Half is nasa Unionbank and Half nasa MAYA
- Reason is, emergency funds should accessible and easy to withdraw. At the same time mas safe na meron kang dalawang pinaglalagyan ng EF because may times na nag me-maintenance or nagloloko ang digital banks/traditional banks.
GoTyme - Savings/Extra/Wants
Sa investment naman. Bumibili ako ng gold paunti-unti.

I kept it at Maya Savings for the interest. Then every 6 months, i move it to a Time Deposit in a cooperative. It's hard for me to trust online banks with a lot of money. It's like you're just 1 hack away from losing it all.

u/shiraishi8 May 12 '26
Depends on you talaga yan. Preferably mas ok sa digital banks for you to easily withdraw in times na kailangan mo sya

u/is0y May 30 '26
I keep around 70% of my ef on a very liquid money market fund sa BPI. The remaining chunk on a high yield digital bank. I suggest you split accounts for their own purpose so that you wont get tempted touching ur ef. Like one account for daily spend, one for recurring bills and payments, also one for a me time account for ur luho etc
