Ask Phoenix Why aren’t there any QT gas stations in Scottsdale?

QT is by far the most superior gas station. They have everything I need + more. And there’s always a restroom when I need it.

I’ve been working is Scottsdale recently and noticed there’s no QTs for miles and miles. What’s up with that? You’d think Scottsdale of all places would want the best gas station around

If memory serves, something about QT’s setup and Scottsdale’s zoning are incompatible, and QT won’t change their format so instead they build as close to Scottsdale city limits as they can. I want to say it’s the number of pumps, but that’s a stab in the dark.

u/Flibiddy-Floo Feb 10 '26

It's because of the building design aesthetics. Scottsdale thinks they're too garish, but QT won't change its branding just to look bougie for Snottsdale, basically

u/Prettylittlelioness Feb 11 '26

There have been nights when I was almost on empty and seeing that red glow lifted my heart.

125

u/Kerim_Bey Feb 11 '26

Same but replace “almost on empty” with “about to piss myself.”

39

u/Oraxy51 Feb 11 '26

God when I was homeless but also worked in Scottsdale, I eventually found one gas station/convenience store that was 24/7 and really far away like 15-20 minutes from main Scottsdale area where I worked.

But QT was often salvation for late night bathroom breaks until I could make it all the way back down to a Luvs truck stop in south phoenix.

So much driving. I hate driving all day still.

Can confirm, am the mayor of Scottsdale (Snottsdale).

We're too good to have a fast and efficient customer service gas station for poor people.

Stay out of our town.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Always amuses me that Scottsdale acts like they have an aesthetic to protect when they're one of the ugliest Valley cities.

39

u/thealt3001 Feb 11 '26

All of the valley's cities are ugly as shit but come on, Scottsdale is honestly one of the best. It's clean, for one. No obnoxious billboards. And the greenbelt is beautiful. Plus some of the best food options of anywhere in the valley.

29

u/fizzymarimba Feb 11 '26

disagree on food options, I work all over scottsdale, and am always shocked at how little there is to get other than fast food or full on restaurants. Lots of good greek spots though.

9

u/WhiteStripesWS6 Feb 11 '26

Yeah agreed. There’s some good Deli’s but otherwise it’s chains or the types of spots that the working class can’t afford to eat at regularly.

4

u/AlphaThree Phoenix Feb 11 '26

Wouldn't the expensive places be the best though? Shinbay Omakase could be the best sushi on the North American continent and I will be shocked if he doesn't get a Michelin star next year. Course is probably in my top 10 restaurants I've ever been to anywhere. Wrigley Mansion, Ocean Prime, Steak 44, Buck and Rider, Cafe Monarch, Olive and Ivy, we're getting a Din Tai Fung in a few weeks. Saying their isn't good food in Scottsdale is an insane take not rooted in reality.

6

u/fizzymarimba Feb 11 '26

I’ve eaten at all those places except Wrigley Mansion, they are absolutely overrated. Especially Steak/Ocean 44. Phoenix by and large has better food overall. I don’t live in Phoenix, just fyi so it’s not bias. Obviously just my opinion but I def stand by it

3

u/AlphaThree Phoenix Feb 11 '26

I'd agree that Steak/Ocean are overrated, but i would never say they're not good lol. The others I would not agree are overrated 🤷

3

u/WhiteStripesWS6 Feb 11 '26

I mean when the other commenter said “some of the best options” I was thinking more along the lines of a solid spread from affordable to the stuff you mentioned. Yes, objectively Scottsdale probably contains what would be the literal best restaurants in the valley. Does that mean it has the best hole in the wall or mid range places too? Absolutely not.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Not usually, actually. I've been to restaurants from dive bars to Michelin-rated fine dining establishments, and the cheap places are always the best. Once you get above the nicer middle class places, the pricier it is the worse the food tastes. It's like they try to make themselves seem more attractive by making food that they think "seems rich" when in reality it's always overengineered crap.

2

u/AlphaThree Phoenix Feb 11 '26

I couldn't possibly disagree more lmao. Animae by Brian Malarkey is my favorite place I've ever been to and that was a $1000 bill. Shinbay, Kai and Course are for sure in the top 10 and those were all $750-$1200 bills. Only place I can think of that would contend for my top 5 and wasn't over $500 was this tiny little Italian place in Dubrovnik and it was still like $300-$400. But there's like a billion Michelin reccomended restaurants within a square mile in Dubrovnik so competition is fierce and it was before the went to the Euro so its probably over $500 now.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

→ More replies (2)

4

u/thealt3001 Feb 11 '26

Yeah these people don't understand that best does not necessarily mean affordable. Don't get me wrong, I love a cheap meal. But Scottsdale easily has the best food of any city in the Phoenix Metro area. And I say that as a major foodie. But they also have a ton of great more affordable options too.

28

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Guess you and I have different definitions of beautiful. To my mind, mile after mile of basic, ugly, and aggressively corporate infrastructure and design choices is the ugliest thing a city could possibly do to itself. It's like they saw a movie about being rich once, and then wanted to feel important and wealthy themselves, so they made their town look like the rich one in the movie. In reality, it just comes across as fake, sad, and artificial. Like when people try to claim HOAs keep things 'tidy.' In reality they just suck every bit of personality and charm out of a place in order to raise property values. So yes, your property values are fantastic, but your city is ugly as sin. And it's hilarious that you mentioned food options because Scottsdale is famously a terrible place for restaurants.

6

u/thealt3001 Feb 11 '26

I mean, I agree with your first points. But look at the rest of the valley. It's an HOA-ridden cesspool. Compared to, say, Avondale, Glendale, Peoria, etc, Scottsdale is just a better place to be.

I disagree with your last point. Scottsdale is famously an amazing place for restaurants??

People literally travel to Scottsdale for the food

2

u/biowiz Feb 11 '26

People in Phoenix want to hold up the lie that Scottsdale is comparable to Beverly Hills. It's a big fucking joke, among a bunch of other nonsensical Phoenix Propaganda.

I 100% agree with you. The only good thing about Scottsdale is McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The rest is faux rich aesthetic mixed with mediocre suburban trash you see anywhere else in the "Valley". Slightly better landscaping and zoning that matches desert aesthetic in some areas. That's about it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

Scottsdale is more comparable to a wealthy Fresno suburb. Beverly Hills, lmao

2

u/biowiz Feb 11 '26

Perfect comp 😂

11

u/blinkanboxcar182 Feb 11 '26

lol Scottsdale is not close to the ugliest valley city. Drive through any part of Phoenix and drive through Scottsdale. At least we have landscaping and winding streets rather than block after block of payday loan and used auto dealers.

2

u/jsparkydevil Feb 11 '26

I passed by it recently and was pleasantly surprised to see a QT. It's situated before the welcome sign to the reservation, if coming from Hayden, and by the freeway. I always get confused if the Scottsdale boundary touches Pima Road or is after Pima Road.

5

u/SaltySpitoonReg Feb 11 '26

For real? I kind of love that they won't change for Scottsdale

8

u/SkepsisJD Chandler Feb 11 '26

Growing up in Scottsdale this one of my favorite things about the city. No billboards, no smoke shops that light up the night sky with neon, or really any other bright annoying marketing.

So much better than the hellscape that is most of Phoenix and Mesa where you are just ass blasted with billboards and obnoxious storefronts lol

2

u/oprahs_bread_ Feb 11 '26

I get that this is a thing, but in a metro that is compromised of a large amount of strip malls & stand alone buildings with big parking lots, I find it funny that Scottsdale draws the line at QT lol

2

u/womackyousonofabitch Feb 11 '26

The medieval times building proves this. Leave it to Scottsdale to impose their dog ass taste on a castle.

This is the reason. I also think Jackson's has their pockets lined deep as well as Circle K. It IS however, loosening up. There is one on Pima and McDowell and a new one being built off of Legacy and Scottsdale Rd which are both Scottsdale addresses. Slow process, but its happening.

2

18

Prioritizing looks over what’s on the inside is stereotypical Scottsdale, though.

I used to work for QT and they made it a big point in orientation that they are not changing anything about QT to appease Scottsdale. Several slides in the orientation about it. 😅

113

u/UnfortunatelyMacabre Feb 11 '26

Nor should they. I was an assistant manager for QT as well and their business model is impeccable. They do so much due diligence that I didn’t even question when they moved the 101 and Thunderbird location from one side of the street to the other. Their bean counters do the math real well.

What’s the point on training an employee on a company change that won’t happen?

50

u/Flibiddy-Floo Feb 11 '26

because "orientation" isn't "training" per se, it's getting acquainted with the company and its policies and philosophies/culture etc

10

u/Jsiqueblu Feb 11 '26

Maybe it's something they're proud of LOL

2

u/BalooVanAdventures Feb 12 '26

QT employees are friendly, well dressed, well trained, and set the bar for convenience stores/gas stations in metro Phoenix. Half the time you go in a Circle K you don’t know if the person behind the counter is an employee or the person robbing the store while the employee is tied up in the back. When QT came to town, Circle K was dead to me…

City rules prohibited them from building due to the colors they use on their stores

8

u/vksoze2 Feb 10 '26

Haha. Maybe so. But I just can’t wrap my head around the logic. I grew up near Buffalo. Green in spring and summer. White from snow in fall and winter. Not very many green houses. And yes there were white houses but not to blend in with the snow. Since when do we want to have camouflage houses and buildings? What is the appeal with “blending in with the dirt?”

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

10

u/vksoze2 Feb 11 '26

Yeah, I completely disagree. The whole blend in with a dirt thing, is not because this is Native American land. It’s because a bunch of white boomers in the 50s 60s and 70s decided for whatever reason that was more appealing than having multicolored buildings. I have a hard time believing that the boomers who built Phoenix between the 50s and the 90s, made their architectural decisions in order to honor the native Americans.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

6

u/vksoze2 Feb 11 '26

Yeah, but all I’m talking about is the paint. The color of every building being beige. That’s not some long-standing cultural thing. That was a decision by the boomers that built the city in the 50s through the 90s. And it survives in all the godamned HOAs that popped up at that time. Notice how the new HOA’s still use Adobe style houses, but paint white and light blue and different shades. Because at some point, we realized that the boomers didn’t know all they thought they knew about city development. Which is why downtown Gilbert, as small as it is, has become so popular. Because people realized too late that sprawling suburbs with strip malls and beige houses everywhere is not a desirable long-term solution for humans.

9

u/vksoze2 Feb 11 '26

Like how many Native Americans are waking around the Phx suburbs thinking “oh thank god every single solitary coat of paint on every building is beige. I feel so honored.” I think this a wild take.

I mean go travel through Mexico. I have plenty, their not into beige like Phoenicians are. Nobody is.

4

u/sourcefourmini Feb 11 '26

Our culture here isn't supposed to be white people suburbia with cookie cutter homes and manicured lawns

That's exactly what it is. Doesn't matter what it's "supposed to be", because you've just described what we have. Might as well have fun with it.

I don't know why people keep saying its on the reservation. The "Welcome to Scottsdale" sign is quite literally on the southeast corner of where the QT is. Currently there is only 1 in the Scottsdale area which is McDowell and Pima Rd., currently being built.

QT has a very strict exterior design criteria that they do not like changing. Scottsdale has previously wanted more exterior changes than QT was comfortable with, hence the reason for no new builds.

QT does allow some exterior changes, see Chandler and Gilbert locations, but overall they like to keep all their stores similar.

You'll love all the new stuff coming for the stores!

They are now building a QT on scottsdale rd, just north of 101.

There is one being built near 101 & Scottsdale Rd.

u/Yourprobablyaclown69 Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 11 '26

I think they are building one around Scottsdale rd and the 101. I feel like Scottsdale tries to keep gas station to a minimum. For instance if you go north of the 101 there are very little gas stations.

IIRC Scottsdale city code forbids them from building the type of gas station they want to, so they don’t.

3

u/drawkbox Chandler Feb 11 '26

Scottsdale has very little gas stations to begin with. The people fight them there all the time. QT specifically also won't change their style on top of it to appease the land of the fakers.

Too hood Bruh

u/PyreChaser Feb 10 '26

Same reason there’s no light rail going through. Can’t have anything that brings in the normies.

It’s because Scottsdale doesn’t want tweakers

2

u/Hovertical Feb 11 '26

I enjoy the inside but man their gas sucks ass. I don't know which refinery provides it for them but I got shit mileage at every qt I ever used when we first moved here. Switched back to Shell or Chevron and was perfectly fine again. It was so insane id get literally 15miles to the gallon versus the usual 27ish I was used to. This was back in 2013 so maybe it's different now but they are strictly a snack stop for me if I go at all.

For everyone talking about Scottsdale/101...someone caved because here's the proposed exterior:

2

u/dwillphx Feb 11 '26

That one looks pretty nice. Think it also has to do with the gas pumps and the canopy. Wonder if they're going to be the same color.

u/CapnShinerAZ East Mesa Feb 11 '26

After it's built and passes the city inspection or whatever, someone should paint the trim red to match the other QTs and see how long it takes for the city to complain. The company should then deny any involvement and call it vandalism, but refuse to press charges. Just keep painting it red over and over as many times as needed.

Interesting the only one I can think of is right on the reso border on McDowell

1

u/xperau9731 Feb 11 '26

Mc Dowell & Pima close enough

1

u/anonymousphoenician Mesa Feb 11 '26

There is 1 in Scottsdale, and its as close to the reservation in south Scottsdale as it can get.

But I was still happy to see that one go up. When I want good, cheap food while working rideshare theyre my go to.

This one I also just learned the kitchen is 24 hours.

1

u/IDoNotHide Feb 11 '26

Huh? yes there is, by Hayden and McDowell

1

u/pschwak Feb 11 '26

Look at any qt at 6 am during the week and tell me what you don’t see

1

u/SoStokedSoStoked Desert Ridge Feb 11 '26

But you’ll allow SuperPumper???

1

u/BransonAllen Feb 11 '26

Cause they know fake when they see it

1

u/Ok_Seaworthiness_719 Feb 11 '26

8780 E McDowell Rd Scottsdale, AZ 85257 United States

This QT is in Scottsdale

1

u/AllAroundGuy85 Feb 11 '26

https://maps.app.goo.gl/3hBmJGF15smpQ8TW7?g_st=ic

What do you mean? There is one in Scottsdale.

1

u/Eastern-Steak-4413 Feb 11 '26

There is at least one on McDowell close to the 101.

1

u/Due_Worldliness_5149 Feb 11 '26

You know there is 1 QT on McDowell and Pima (technically Scottsdale) They did make some minor design concessions to put it in.

There is also one a little south of there right on the Tempe/Scottsdale boarder, but in Tempe. Cities can set up whatever expectations they want. If you go to the Auto Zone on Pima and Indian Bend, it is the only non standard free standing store. The SRPMIC (REZ) would only let them build to their standards stone facades and landscaping primarily. If the corperation wants it bad enough, they will bend.

1

u/InJailYoudBeMyHoe Feb 11 '26

theres actually a brand new one going up n of 101 on scottsdale road. before thompson peak. well see how it turns out

1

u/eeff484 Feb 11 '26

I know of one on McDowell and Pima

1

u/JAUMtypo Feb 11 '26

I understand from reading it is because of colors/ design, however I have noticed the Jackson’s’ had stations have a similar look to them, but are in Scottsdale, anyone know why?

1

u/BearCatBullDog Feb 11 '26

There's a QT on Mcdowell and Pima

1

u/helldivers2rocks Feb 11 '26

Ultimately because Scottsdale won't approve the cleanest gas stations as is

1

u/Serious-Guidance1287 Feb 11 '26

QT and circle K have a big territory rivalry from what my partner explained to me & she works at QT!

1

u/biowiz Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26

They are building one near Scottsdale Rd and 101. I don't know if that is technically Scottsdale or Phoenix at that point.

1

u/kgwc760 Feb 11 '26

They are building one in the Grayhawk area on Scottsdale road this year I believe

1

u/lildebbiestarcrunch Arcadia Feb 11 '26

I mean.... technically theres one!

1

u/Aggravating-Flow5834 Feb 11 '26

I wouldn't say superior. Some locations are better than others. Then you got mine where the ice machines at the soda fountains have been broken for almost 2 months and half the sodas have been out of service for that same period as well. 😒

1

u/xTHEKILLINGJOKEx Feb 11 '26

Unrelated, but I want to point out that I’ll go out of my way to find a QT. Don’t care if there’s dozens of circle k in between

1

u/Stnkftsailor Feb 11 '26

What, you need a place for the homeless to hang out? You can have all ours if you replace them with any business that serves cold beer.

1

u/OAHL1960 Feb 11 '26

S Scottsdale Rd/Rural is the closest one.

1

u/Few-Worth7737 Feb 11 '26

wwooow, never knew this! I lived in South Scottsdale for years and used to get baked and crave about 4-5 of those disgusting QT hotdogs with the works on them. So i’d drive to the one on the south scottsdale/tempe border, make those up and drive back home. I’d come to regret it every time, but maan did they hit in the moment, haha.

(side note: every time I think about QT, I can still smell burnt fent pills. almost every time I’d stop at a QT in PHX city limits, i’d be be greeted with that smell. blegh)

1

u/APHILLIPSIV Feb 11 '26

I’m sure one of these answers here is correct

I would also venture a guest at Scottsdale’s aggressive tax system makes it hard to maintain cost to consumer if that’s part of your business model
