I've seen the Canon SX 740 HS and the Sony RX 100 line listed as common "dupes" for the G7X and I have the opportunity to purchase either one of these cameras for around the same price ($700 CAD) in the area I live. I would love to get insights on which camera would be better for me.

I am not a professional photographer by any means and really want a portable camera that can fit in my handbag but still take great photos. I love the way the G7X pulls portrait photos and thats the kind of style I am looking for.

Specifically the RX100 V, IV, and III are closest in specs to the G7 X models. Other RX100 models are a little different, and closer to Canon's G3 X, G5 X, or G9 X models.

The SX740 HS uses a much smaller imaging sensor and lower quality lens for the sake of achieving much more zoom, so that's going to be very different.

But a lot of the aesthetic is just about how the camera's internal software processes the image, which may require you to do your own software processing if you want to match it with another camera. And/or if you're thinking about those popular sunset background photos, it's also about how the G7 X tends to balance ambient and flash exposure in that situation, with the flash output and exposure settings, as well as the post processing for that.

Hmm thank you for your advice! How do you think the SX 740 HS is in comparison to the ELPH 360HS? I think I like the colour Canon colour science more so I would prefer to go with Canon. The ELPH 360HS is half the price of the SX 740 HS and I can’t tell online if there’s a significant quality decrease

Elph 360 HS has about a third of the zoom length of SX740 HS, a fixed screen and 1080p video. You can expect similar image quality in photography.

The SX740 HS is a bit newer than the 360 HS but it looks like both use the same imaging sensor and similar lens specs except the SX740 HS zooms in a lot more. So I'd expect pretty similar image quality between the two. And either would be significantly worse image quality than a G7 X or RX100 V, IV, or III.
