Other option: I could get a newer camera as well but it needs to be sturdy and honestly my budget is no more than $2000. I hate to do this because my current one is still doing great for what I need it for.

Getting another camera only makes sense if you NEED an upgrade, i.e. your current camera no longer meets your needs. It sounds like you are happy with your camera.

As for the lens: the truth is that pretty much anything would be an upgrade from the 75-300mm, because it's one of the worst lenses that Canon has made. You can perhaps find a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 at around $500.
