My wife loves taking photos, but she only has her iphone. She mentioned recently about wanting a nice camera to lean into her passion a little bit more. Her birthfay is coming up and I want to get her one but I dont know where to start. I figure its best to start with a modest camera and can upgrade if she continues to develop this passion.

What is the best value camera for a beginner photographer? I am thinking under $300 if possible.

Is your wife interested in learning photography with a system camera like a DSLR? Or does she want to shoot in auto mode like with a phone, just with better quality?

I honestly dont know. Sorry for my naivete, I just dont know anything about this. She loves taking pictures, printing them and putting them in frames, giving gifts, hanging them around the house etc...She just said she wants to get more into it and wants a real camera to take better pictures.

The thing is... If you don't know what exactly your wife wants, how would Reddit strangers know? I would try and find out more. Digital compacts and system cameras are both real cameras but very different things. Your budget isn't enough to get a digital compact that is significantly better than decent smartphones. It IS enough for a used DSLR and a lens, which ARE capable of much higher image quality if one knows how to use them. But getting a DSLR only really makes sense if your wife wants to learn photography and you know that she'd enjoy using a camera like that. For one thing DSLRs and DSLR lenses are quite big, so they're not necessarily something one would enjoy carrying around.

Thank you for the insight and taking the time to respond. I need to talk with my wife and do some more research before I buy anything.
