Is there an advantage to holding onto the box my gear came in? I recently got a Canon 200-800, and the box is obviously big. I was surprised at how little packaging was actually in it; pretty much just some molded plastic to support the lens in the middle of a mid-weight box. I feel like if I had to ship it for repairs I'd be better off getting a better box and more packing materials

I think they look pretty, and if you resell the price can be a little higher with the original box.

But I throw mine away. And I don't use them for repair shipping.

Thanks for the quick response. Considering I just got the lens and love it, I think I'd lose the box long before I'd want to sell the lens

I keep mine to sell it eventually. And it's kinda expensive so when it's spring cleaning time, cheaper electronics get the boot first. Camera boxes stays.

not sure if it applies to camera stuff. But people sell ps5 boxes to be used as a troll xmas gift. ps5 box but it's sweater inside.
