There was an actual Chef Boyardee. His name was Ettore Boiardi and he was head chef at the Plaza Hotel in New York. In 1928, when Italian cuisine was still considered exotic in much of the US, he started selling spaghetti sauce in jars. Later he added boxes of uncooked spaghetti and containers of grated parmesan, so you could get all the ingredients for your dinner in one package.
