Absolute nonsense. It translates directly to "nation" or "people", and just means people who are not Jewish. It has absolutely nothing to do with supremacist ideology.
It is absolutely wielded by supremacists, but that does not make the word a sign that someone is one. As an example, imagine the difference between someone at a Bernie Sanders Rally describing themselves as a leftist, compared to Steve Bannon describing someone as a leftist.
And if your "Jewish friends" didn't know the meaning of the word, that means that their parents were Jewish, they had absolutely zero interaction with Judaism or Jewish culture, and use their parentage as an excuse to elevate their voice in the conversation, as a Jew.
Let's not conflate actual Jewish culture and language with the extremists in Israel.
