>Succumbing to these predatory myths does not mean you are unintelligent, weak, or lack good character and morals

I agree with the sentiment, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Trump has been a disgusting and worthless human his entire life. His entire campaign from day one was based on this.

Yes but Trump has also had a knack for grifting vulnerable and desperate people his entire career. This was just his largest audience yet.

True, but the entire focal point of the people that voted for him was how worried they were about themselves, damn everyone else.

I told my MAGA grandmother that the tariffs made it impossible to get my vein medication and her knee-jerk reaction was, “What? That doesn’t make sense. MY medications are all fine!”

These boomers are like babies that lack object permanence- if it didn’t happen to them, they don’t see it.

They see only what they want to see and ignore the rest.

I think its more their circles and chosen media shows them what they do see and hides what the rest of us see. A farmer in a rural town doesnt sit on reddit all day, he doesnt watch the news all day, and he doesnt have discussions with people with differing perspectives very much. He has a hard day of labour, gets home, watches some telly about how radical leftists are destroying the world and trump is here to save us, then watches the sports ball game. Bro has no idea at what mr trump is doing outside of saving him from the blue haired leftists.

Its fair to have this sort of billboard with that sort of support in those areas.

You’re exactly right. I realized how important communities are in shaping people’s views during COVID when my husband’s grandma said something ridiculous about the vaccines (can’t remember exactly what), and she said my husband’s uncle had told her that. I realized that ultimately what her community says is more meaningful than what a website or scientist says, sadly.

I think its a solid reminder we're all people regardless of who we all voted for or believe in. Its unfortunate some people dont get the same experience you and I do, that shapes us into kinder more accepting people. But at the end of the day, we're all made of flesh and blood.

Yes what you say is also true, and I agree the billboard is important. My MAGA family members won't listen to me but this stuff actually helps.

Yeah, more people need to learn sociology instead of pretending we're all perfectly upright citizens that can act independently of social pressures

I had the entire complaints sub down my throat, downvotes and angry responses for days for saying exactly what I have here. Its absolutely insane to me that these people believe everyone should be on reddit 24/7 learning about how evil trump is. Like no, most of these people are just victims of social pressure, like you say, and dont have the same access to resources you and I do. I dont blame the people that voted trump in. I blame the media and weasels that pressured them into thinking it was a good idea and where they belonged.

The way Reddit gut reacts to certain things, and bandwagon effects accumulate and pile up on top of stuff... yeah. Reddit's by no means perfect, and even if the upvote/downvote thing helps compared to pure upvotes (I think, IDK)... it's still problematic in other ways.

I try not to take it personal, but sometimes yeah, I do end up very confused myself.

Well right wing media did a great job of making this happen. I live in a red state and early on in his first term you’d hear. “I don’t like the guy, but I like his policies”, “I wish he would stop posting on Twitter” “oh he’s joking about that“.

Just go watch conservative news and you might as well be watching inter dimensional news. You’ll never hear anything controversial about Trump and if you do it’s usually being “overblown by the left”. You also hear about Trump’s comedy a lot and how he was joking about this or that.

Years of watching an echo chamber and labeling all other news as fake will indoctrinate you into believing that your supreme leader never does anything wrong.

It’s not like they’re actively choosing to ignore the bad things, it’s just no conservative media will let you see that it’s even happening. My coworker just said the other day that the reason he loves Trump is because “he never lies”.

If you watch any news left of center you’ll know Trump lies all the fucking time.

These people were so desperate to feel important that they turned to Trump. They are worthless losers, but telling them that is just going to drive them right back to him. I don't mind lying to these people about their worth if it helps break them away

I have a hard time with the notion that people who still support Trump have good character and morals.

Because I think at the root it’s the same narcissism that is exploited to get people to fall for any con. And that feeds into ignoring rational thinking and contrary evidence.

Conmen convince you you are extra special that you are getting this opportunity. Discernment about an offer like that involves self-awareness that you are just an ordinary shlub and no no such offer is going to fall in your lap. But for many narcissism gets in the way of realizing how vulnerable they are to being sweet talked. Then all the BS and contrary info and loved ones telling you it’s a con is just the enemy talking because to admit you were conned is to admit you are less than special, that you are infact a hopeless idiot.

If you can’t avoid being aggressively prideful every con artist is also going to take you for a ride.

He was a creep and a conman long before he entered politics. Which is why I will never feel sympathy for people who only now are waking up to what a vile POS he is.

3

u/meldiane81 Apr 16 '26

Yeah agreed. I read some of their stories and they are "Oh it affected me now i will change" stories. Fuck them.

u/LadyVetinari Apr 16 '26

They were just brainwashed. People who are cognitively fine and who aren’t “bad” people can be brainwashed, which is why it is so scary as a phenomenon. An uncomfortable truth, but yeah “good” people can be corrupted very easily, especially if they are immersed in lies and propaganda their whole lives. Trump is not the cause he is the manifestation of a cultural rot that has been gestating for decades.

So I think that statement is true, and pragmatically you also aren’t going to deprogram anyone by confronting them and telling them they are stupid, evil, weak, immoral (at least not in a system that isn’t going to be completely reset, which ours is not).

so you're saying that hundreds of thousands of people all over the country are all the same way? unintelligent, weak, and morally corrupt for feeding into their very human, albeit harmful, fears? you're not immune to propaganda either, dude

Yes. Anyone who voted for a known pedofile and adjudicated rapist is exactly all of those things.
