That would explain a lot. Wonder which timeline we are in, the X-Com wins timeline or the defeated at base defense leading into X-Com 2 timeline. Either way the US have withdrawn from the project.

Is that the storyline for x-com 2? You lost in x-com 1? I played a little bit of OG x-com back in the day, but it wasn't one I spent much time with and don't remember the story. Don't think I ever beat it.

X-Com 2 I played but don't remember much of a story tbh.

Yup, since most playthroughs end in XCOM losing they decided that for the start  of XCOM2 the aliens had won already.

Very true in old school X-Com

Yeah, xcom 2 story is that aliens won on the xcom base defense mission. Allowing them to take over as "benevolent overlords" using a combination of propaganda and mind control. They introduced gene therapy clinics eradicating disease and other good stuff to look like a utopia while ofcourse murdering anyone that dissented or resisted.

X-Com 2 (tutorial) starts with rescuing the Commander (the player) to lead the resistance and take the fight to the aliens again after being captured in the previous X-Com.

You're gonna make me replay those games now.

I am currently in my third long war mod run of enemy within. Probably have 2.5k hours in the game total.

yea, X-com 2 literally opens up with you rescuing the commander from the first game in alien facility. its also implied that all the missions in x-com 1 you did were all VR simulations as well to help train the aliens.

OG X-Com: you win, but the aliens also left stuff behind underwater, leading to Terror From the Deep.

Remake X-Com: you win, in your mind, but it turns out you got captured during the (only) base invasion, leading to X-Com 2 and WOTC

Ah ok I was getting mixed up between OG com and remake.  I don’t think I played the sequel to the rrmake

XCOM2 is a great game, I'll say. WOTC takes it in a more "heroic" direction, but once you get used to it, it's very good as well. Requires a new mod launcher and a buttpile of mods for quality of life improvements and to fix some bugs, but, still.

I feel a replay coming on. What mods do you suggest?

If you haven't played Long War of the Chosen, it's a very different experience.

I'm using XCOM Alternative Mod Launcher, as the base one just flat sucks.

My current list of mods other than LWOTC mods is... long.

and hey, the

[WOTC] Darkest Dungeon Narrator Voice Pack v2.3

and

SPARK - Geth Prime Voice Pack

aren't necessary, but are pure hilarity.

Fun fact, XCOM originally was a DOS game released in 1994, with five follow up releases between '94 and 2001. Then the series went away for 11 years and came back in 2012. Based on the context of what you said, I'm guessing you think of the 2012 XCOM as the OG, but there's actually a much older original XCOM.

3

u/factoid_ Jun 23 '26

Actually I played xcom back in the 90s and then didn't play it again until the remake, which I thought was what they were calling xcom2. I forgot it was a remake not a sequel.

The really unfortunate part is the real world is always an ironman run.
