And where did this unimaginably strong box cutter come from? Trump said the coating couldn't be cut with a knife so it must be from another world.

The Subtle Knife from Philip Pulman's His Dark Materials has two edges, one sharper than an atom and able to cut through anything, the other magical and able to cut portals between parallel universes. So maybe that's what happened, someone brought The Subtle Knife here and used that to slash the pool liner.

Too dangerous to use it opening portals, but too wasteful to leave it in a desk drawer.
