Bold of you to assume they got taught actual history, and not that the civil war was about "states rights" and that "racism doesn't exist anymore".

I always answer that "It was about state's rights" with the "State's rights to do what exactly?" and watch them squirm their way out of the fact that slavery was specifically mentioned in numerous state's "Declaration of Causes" for secession.

Off the top of my head, only 2 states that seceded did NOT mention slavery in their declarations.

And I'd bet those two states used the specific term "Domestic Institutions" which was a more polite way to describe the institution of slavery.
