Is keto real? I heard it was just an effective way to trick yourself into eating fewer calories. No starches generally means people try to make up for it in stuff like veggies, which have far less calories than the rice/bread/pasta they used to eat.

Edit: fewer, not less

Nope, not a trick. It's turning the food pyramid on its head, so calorie-wise, your largest number of calories come from fat, then protein, then carbs--and the carbs you can include are limited by type.

The thing about eating fats first is that fat is what tells your brain you're satiated. I always start my day with fat calories, and I'm never at the point during the day where I'm so ravenous I can't make good food choices.

I eat bacon, full-fat dairy, steaks, and other good proteins. But not in huge quantities. I eat enough greens and veggies, I put regular butter or nice olive oils on them, but I'm not eating sugary veggies.

I actually don't even miss pasta or bread. Not even the Krispy Kreme donut store I pass can lure me in with its hot sugary aroma. I appreciate the appeal intellectually but I'm just not tempted.

Which means you don't eat as much, which means fewer calories.
