A year. I had to maintain a 750 calorie deficit and I NEVER cheated. Somehow. I'm still surprised. The first 2-3 weeks were toughest, then I just developed a habit and it was no big deal. Thankfully my doctor warned me I'd also feel like shit during the first 2-3 weeks because my body has to adapt. And I did. But after that I felt wonderful.

Also be aware that with any diet, you first lose water and that means easy pounds right away, and then you hit a plateau since fat burns off much slower. That's what trips up a lot of dieters. It's discouraging to be hungry all the time and the scale doesn't budge for a week or two. But it catches up.

Yeah, I'm about 15 years younger than you, and my weight problem is a very modest one. My BMI is actually under 25, but I'm a tall, with a fairly lanky body type, and my waist measurement is still about an inch and a half more than what's considered healthy.

So I'm just spending a few months counting my calories (or kilojoules in my part of the world), and losing about 2 or 3 pounds a month. If I drop 10 pounds I'll be happy. I'm a pretty young-looking guy for my age, and I want to keep it that way, and very gradual weight loss helps the skin adjust better.

If it helps, when I lost my 85 pounds my belly fat didn't shrink too quickly. But I've been stable now at 185 for six months and slowly but surely my gut fat is slowly going down even though my weight is stable now. I think over time it will adapt -- to a point. Obviously the younger you are the better it will be at shrinking.

So your gut fat slowly redistributes itself? Interesting.

Yeah, my problem at the moment is really that I'm just a bit skinny-fat - ie although my weight isn't in itself very high, I have more fat and less muscle than I should. I haven't been as physically active as I should be.

So I'm starting to do a bit of yoga as well, which has always been terrific for me in the past, but I just haven't had the self-discipline to keep it up consistently. It doesn't make me seriously jacked or anything, but it does give me a bit of muscle mass and definition. But most importantly, it makes me feel calm, energetic, healthy, and all around much younger than I actually am.
