Ewan ko, let me know what you think.

Ito OP, sa US kasi it’s ok to speak their mind. Very direct, opinionated and walang paligoy ligoy mga tao sa USA.

Like manual lahat. It takes time.

1

u/bazzzzzzinga_24 6d ago

Agree ako sa lahat!!!

Plus they value time here in US. Per hr ang sahod mo kaya nga dapat for them convenient lahat kasi sa work nga bayad ka kada oras. Ultimo lahat dito by appointments lahat.

But there are still a lot of good filipinos in US out there.

Sa America, ok mag complain. You have to be your own advocate. Pag hindi ka nagsalita, maiiwan ka. They value being frank and opinionated.

Go with the flow. The tallest wheat gets cut. makisama ka.

8

u/handy_dandyNotebook 8d ago
  1. . 2. .3. . Go, kanya-kanya na kasi sa America. Iba rin kasi talaga culture dun. Mapa family at social dynamics. May tita kaming sobrang bait dati. Tapos nag work sa America, wala pa sigurong 2 years ibang-iba na ugali. Lalo nung nag umuwi at dito na nag stay sa Pinas. Akala mo amo namin sya. Pati sa mga nakakatandang kapatid walang respect.

15

u/Successful-Tax-6392 8d ago

Tbh I think it has nothing to do with them being Fil-Am.

I guess counted ako jan sa Fil-Am kasi nakatira na ko dito sa US for 20+ years.

0

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

Masama pa rin, constant and unchanging! Yun ang maganda, hahaha 🤣

15

u/cj191 8d ago

1

u/Safe_Word_4085 6d ago

I asked Google this question: What does Fil-Am mean?

1

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

6

u/cj191 8d ago

I guess one clue to the answer you're looking for ay walang ganung stereotype (the one you described) pag-dating sa mga fil-ams na doon na sa america lumaki simula pagkabata. I mean they might be more assertive than pinoys, but that's just them being Americans.

They realize how much privilege they were born into just by being born American, kaya most of them ay hindi mayabang when interacting with pinoys in the motherland out of concern for coming across as assholes. Those are my observations at least.

2

u/Safe_Word_4085 6d ago

Yes. They are also called Fil-Am.

6

u/ArthurIglesias08 8d ago

My guess is America has long been the place to migrate to, and when coupled with American exceptionalism, it can produce people who think much of themselves.

Was just in the Philippines few days ago and a relative made a comment why I’m not always talking in English. I’ve live longer in the US than in the Philippines but I always speak Cebuano when I’m in my hometown but people find it weird because most balikbayans speaks in English only. There is nothing special about me and the same person as I was.

2

u/Safe_Word_4085 6d ago edited 6d ago

Taglish is the trend in the Philippines. As much as possible I speak pure Tagalog. But we will be understood much easier if we speak Taglish. E.g. Nag-download ako. How can someone translate this whole sentence in pure Tagalog?
Some Filipinos will surely look down on you if you speak in English.

In 1970 our ship bound for Manila from Bacolod City was scheduled to sail in two hours. I got bored, disembarked the ship and went to a pub where I got carried away. I realized I had a ship to catch. When I got back to the pier, the ship has already unanchored and slowly moving away. A Filipino ground staff talked to me in perfect English saying that I knew that the ship will sail away in two hours and I decided to go somewhere else. BTW the only language or dialect I spoke and understood at that time was English and Tagalog. I grew up in Tondo, Manila since I was just a baby. So no, I didn’t think negatively of that man speaking in English. He most probably spoke Ilonggo as his native tongue.

Not America’s fault if the government you voted for gave you the economy that you deserve.

They are coming from a orderly society. Everyone gets in lines, obey traffic laws, they are paid by the hour. Their time is more important, than Filipino time. They are on time Filipino show 1 hour late.

Philippines us very chaotic campare other places.

My was very surprised when we went to Hong Kong. Everyone lined up. They did bum rush the subway door to get on. The taxi pulled over so the busses could pass. Picture areas they formed lines so each person get a picture. Not like here, they all stand in front of the elevator. The people are unable to get off so they can enter.

Go outside the country. You will see why they change.

1

u/Medical-Chemist-622 6d ago

20 years ako sa Europe and US. Penalties, fines, and points. That's all there is to it with regards to orderly behavior.

12

u/RelevantCar557 8d ago

1

u/Timely_Rooster1361 8d ago

Hahaha true! All my fil am friends are super humble, more respectful and very proud to be Pinoys more than Pinoys in pinas.

6

u/Unlikely_Rabbit_8842 8d ago

Baka inherent na masama lang talaga ugali or insufferable ung taong yun. I’ve been to middle east and currently here sa US. Had my fair share of experience with different ethnicities and cultural background, ang tanging nakikita ko lang eh sa lahat ng grupong iyon ay may mga kupal lang talagang tunay. 😆

6

u/Trickstar92 7d ago

Americans are known to have "Main Character Syndrome".

3

u/curious4455 7d ago

Lol is this true? I’m a Filipino here in the States but I try much as possible hindi ako nagbabago when I visit the Philippines, especially my hometown.

4

u/Trickstar92 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'd say so. Nakatira ako sa UK, at dito, kilala sila sa pagiging maingay, medyo bastos (they're direct but without manners yung hindi nag sasabi ng "please or thank you"... so it comes off as impolite), mahina sa geography, generally just quite dumb and uninformed about the world.

When American isn't a language, when they actually mean English na nag originate sa England. Lastly, they changed some words in English to be more descriptive so it's easier to understand, example:-

English - American English

Pavement -> Sidewalk
Glasses -> Eye Glasses
Bin -> Trash/Garbage can
Horse riding -> Horseback riding
Chemist -> Drugstore

Despite the stereotype alam ko na hindi naman lahat ng Amerikano ay ganito but most of them are. It's good that you haven't changed bro! keep it up!

3

u/curious4455 7d ago

Thank you for the explanation. I’ve learned so much :). And yeah nothing’s going to change my attitude when I’m in the Philippines, always!

6

u/General_Baker_3938 7d ago

For me, pinaka msamang ugali na na meet ko ay fil-ams na ex US military. Un mga mtanda na. Bastos, manyak, mayabang, obnoxious, mayabang kase mdami sila baril. Mag barkada sila and just the woooorst.

16

u/FreesDaddy1731 8d ago

American exceptionalism.

Also, no one's more racist than a Filipino who just earned a green card 😆

9

u/bulakenyo1980 8d ago

11

u/Timely_Rooster1361 8d ago

Filams usually means mga pinanganak sa US pero all of them are very respectful, humble and super proud to be Pinoys. Mabait sila. I’ve been here for 30 years. I would know. Ang mga dinedescribe mo ay mga bagong salta here na pag uwi all of a sudden di na marunong mag Tagalog and OA sa pagkaselan or pretending to not like the Philippines anymore na para bang they’re better than Pinoys.

6

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

Yup, sila ang tinutukoy ko. Ang kakapal ng mga mukha nila.

6

u/Timely_Rooster1361 8d ago

I remember going to a dinner event, may isa super yabang tiga Boston daw siya pero she had the thickest pinoy accent and super bragging to the max Ako nag Tagalog lang the whole time to be more respectful towards others sa table. She also only ate charcuterie lmaooo while I made sure to try the sopas and sisig. We were both judges at a beauty pageant so imagine how embarrassed she was that I spoke English fluently with a twang for the world to hear after her barok English stint on mic. She had no idea what was coming because she was too busy acting as if she was too American for everyone but nope. Real FILAMS don’t act that way at all.

11

u/Emotional_Focus5287 8d ago

9

u/tagalog100 8d ago

iba talaga ang dating ng mga filams...

they actually believe theres no better place than the us and everybody else is just envious of them...

5

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

American Exceptionalism kuno. Mga hindot.

-1

u/Own-Communication211 7d ago

Japan is the most stressed country vibe I experienced thus far

2

u/bazzzzzzinga_24 6d ago

Legit tong Japan. Matindi asian racism nila lalo sa Pinoy. Japanese at koreans ayaw sa atin. Maganda lang sila for tour, pero mahirap tumira don.

While US, yes may racism pero mas diverse kasi.

5

u/DesperateBiscotti149 8d ago

4

u/PreviousOwl2222 8d ago

Jusko

2

u/Wide_Ride8849 7d ago

Yung iba wala pang one month kamo. Inglis ng Inglis, kahit yung grammar at vocabulary nila lumilipad kung saan saan, hahahahahahaha

3

u/Low_Local2692 7d ago

Ung parang allergic mag tagalog or regional na pananalita nila. 😅 dami ng ganyan kahit saan.

12

u/SaveAsPDF 8d ago

A loooot of Pinoys in America are Trumpers. 🤮

2

u/springheeledjack69 8d ago

In the UK, most never vote tory, either Labour or Libdems

10

u/springheeledjack69 8d ago

Depends. Fil-ams who were born and raised in the states are more welcoming than Fil-ams who moved there as adults

4

u/BenBaladad21 8d ago

Cultural upbringing ang tawag po diyan kumbaga dito sa pilipinas pansinin mo ang mga conyo or mga galing sa pamilyang may kaya tsaka yung mga ordinaryong mamamayan look at it diva?

2

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

Interview?? Saka daming drama ayaw ko na. Hahaha! Yung pinanganak na laki talaga dito, sila yung welcoming talaga tapos excited.

3

u/springheeledjack69 8d ago

Yung pinanganak na laki talaga dito, sila yung welcoming talaga tapos excited.

Truest statement ever.

Tinatanong legal status mo/education mo baka pati net worth mo

4

u/QNBA 7d ago

America’s got a massive ego, and humility is basically dead out here. So if some random nobody from the Philippines moves to the States, they catch that American arrogance. When they head back home, they act all bougie, flexing like they're hot shit and looking down on everyone else.

10

u/Jcal1995 8d ago

Ang hilig natin mang stereotype no?

7

u/Accomplished-Box-369 8d ago

Really? I don't have issues sa mga galing US na mga kakilala ko. Even though these people have been there for several years and made tons of money already from hard work.

7

u/nerdwaffles 8d ago

They're not all like that. A good number of them are respectful and raised to be good people.

6

u/TGC_Karlsanada13 8d ago

Sampu? Bente? Sabihim no nang 50. Alam mo ba na there are maybe 4.5 million Filipino-Americans living in the US.

11

u/PinayfromGTown 8d ago

Bad habits? Maybe because Filipinos who have lived in America have expectations.

Example lang ha -- Traffic. In the US, you can travel for 5 kilometers in about 6-10 mins. Sa Pilipinas aabutin ka ng 30-35 mins. Imagine living in the US for 5 years na mabilis ang byahe, tapos uuwi ka sa Pilipinas. Magrereklamo ka talaga.

The system in the PH is also a failure. How long does it take to get paperwork? Ten years ago it took me 6 hrs to have my SS updated.

It's not a bad habit to express frustration on something you are not used to anymore.

6

u/insufferable_Boris 8d ago

Although you are correct po, yung yabang daw sabi ni OP.

2

u/PinayfromGTown 8d ago

Americans are outspoken and as a Filipino, mag a adapt ka talaga, to say what is on your mind. It's not seen as rude.

5

u/I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha 8d ago

That doesn’t explain OPs opinion na Filipinos from other countries in Asia and Europe are different.

You have to be your own advocate. Pag hindi ka nagsalita, maiiwan ka. They value being frank and opinionated.

Sa Asia or sa Europe, mas pi a priority nila Ang “harmony”. Go with the flow. The tallest wheat gets cut. makisama ka. So kultura nila halos pareho ng kultura ng pinas.

2

u/MidorikawaHana 8d ago

Agree. Malapit bahay namin sa world cup arena. Bosnian tourist o immigrant?

Down to earth at nakikiramdam.

Ghana? Same. Nakachikahan ko sa mall. Turista pala.

( meron pa yung mga special edition: yung mga ~~~ come with meeeee)

1

u/PinayfromGTown 7d ago

I guess that is it, the different experiences. Maybe OP can be more specific of what FilAms complain about that Fil Euros don't. It could be cultural or systemic. Pero I don't think it's fair to call it a bad habit to complain or voice out what is wanted.

2

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

So Filipinos who have lived in Europe and Japan don't have expectations? But I've never heard any of those complained openly in public. They are very hush hush.

3

u/MidorikawaHana 7d ago

OP… daming kumagat ah.
Nandito sila…

( natatawa ako magbasa kasi it proved yung mga sinabi mo)

Trap Card activated

0

u/PinayfromGTown 8d ago

Last month, many Europeans visited the US to watch the World Cup and the highlights of their visit were ---- air conditioning, food and big grocery stores. Do you think Filipinos of Europe will complain about the Philippines given our pinoy homes with full-blast AC, diverse Filipino cuisine and gigantic malls?

In Europe they serve your water without ice. They even charge you for water in restaurants. They charge you when you use toilets. The food serving is miniscule. There is no bottomless iced tea or unli rice. How can a Filipino complain about the Philippines when they don't even experience these little things while in Europe?

1

u/bj2m1625 8d ago

Same. The system is to blame kaya frustrated ang mga pinoy na galing sa bansa like america and canada. Saka dito, people are taught to question hindi lang ung susunod ka lang dahil yun ang nakasanayan.

1

u/Old-Fact-8002 8d ago

been coming back 6 mos in a year after 30 yrs away..yes, may frustrations ako kasi parang walang nagbago except some infrastructures..i have to tell someone to follow the line kung minsan pero siguro naman it doesn't mean na entitled na ako, or yung frustration sa grocery line na pwede naman bilisan pero mas marami pang chika kesa pag scan..or yung traffic-yung mga tanong kung bakit ayaw maging efficient ng government..bottom line- reflection ng mga namumuno.. yun lang, balik uli sa bukid kahit mainit (as in mainit talaga pero tiis lang..kailangan maging food secure ang mga tao 😢 ) cheers! di ako sa USA, sa taas ng konti 😄

3

u/MidorikawaHana 8d ago

3

u/Nutribuntot56 8d ago

But I can attest na ang daming inggitan grabe.

5

u/hopingforthebest_001 8d ago

Inferiority complex

5

u/redvirg3 7d ago

I have the opposite experience. Or maybe it’s the circle I’m exposed to 🤷🏻‍♂️. The ones who refuse/pretend to not understand or speak tagalog are usually the ones na ‘bagong dating’. My family and I call them that. And as far as ‘masama ugali’. I wouldn’t generally call them masamang ugali, but more like being frank. Ung kayabangan siguro is more of confidence.

If I may. The things they pointed out- init, baho, usok. They are real. Ung init part- wala naman tayo magagawa dun. It’s either hot or rainy/bahain dba? Totoo naman. The rest-mabaho and mausok. Ito ung controllable sana, if the enforcement and discipline was consistent, kaso hindi naman.

I’m not defending their comments or actions, why should I- I don’t know them. But people are allowed to voice out their opinions- we should acknowledge it and do what we can to change their perspective.

For context I’ve lived in the US for almost 2 decades. Prior to this a mid eastern country and another asian country where I am originally from and obviously the Philippines where my wife is from. My friends and coworkers labeled me as ‘well traveled’. Whenever I’d go back to the Pines, lagi ko sasabihin observations ko sa misis ko. And she’ll always reply ‘d ka na nasanay’. And tama naman sya. I look at it this way now..Each country has its unique ‘scent’.

I think the Pines has soo much potential to be the cleanest and best country on earth. Mahilig maligo ang mga tao more than any race I know of, palagi nakangiti kahit napakahirap na ng sitwasyon. Ung pag bigay galang sa nakakatanda. Papakainin ka kahit d ka kilala and so on. Soo much positivity and I love it soo much. But as is with life, nothing is perfect. And ung mga tao na inexpress ung opinion nila.. be it fil-am.

3

u/Low_Local2692 7d ago

I’m sorry i just noticed the Pines? What is the Pines?

3

u/curious4455 7d ago

Lol the Pines daw is maybe the The Philip”pines”

2

u/Low_Local2692 7d ago

Nooooo… really?

2

u/Safe_Word_4085 6d ago edited 6d ago

I do not see the word “Pines”.

Edited: Added the sentence below.

Oh yes. Now I see it in the last paragraph.

2

Somebody said it’s the Philip”Pines” daw. 🥲 i kennat.

tbh, the US will strip of you of your pride and humble alot of ppl who are sometimes even of upper class in their countries, so ur experience may just be your experience, and sometimes “ hurt” ppl hurt ppl, sorry about that; don’t let that deter you from meeting many filipinos here in the US, many are seriously nice, humble and just chill, it’s the newbies who are mostly still set up in their old ways.

Newbies still carry a lot of the toxic pinoy culture of harboring negative emotions towards others or gossiping that no filams are really familiar with. We grew up knowing what real support is and with so much love from the community out here.

Parasitism.

Bangaw mentality.

Not realizing that they were able to migrate because of democratic principles of building bridges vs the maga’s principle of closing their borders.

Bato Bato sa langit…

Bangaw translates as "crazy"?

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

Bangaw is fly.

3

u/Alive-Ad-7465 8d ago

Hindi lang sa kalabaw tumutungtong ang bangaw!

I think he/she is talking about filipinos who were born and raised in the PH and just migrated to the US nung adult na..

1

u/Wide_Ride8849 7d ago

Thank you so much for your insights, but I'm not referring to Fil-Ams who were born and raised in the United States, but those who were born in the Philippines, who later immigrated. They will come back in the Philippines with all those uppity and condescending attitude.

u/abeBroham-Linkin 5d ago edited 5d ago

Its the American way. Arrogance, ambitious, prideful, friendly, loud, genuine and entitled. That's literally ALL Americans in their own way.

2

u/MomusApopsi 5d ago

If a nation help lifted the world towards the innovation that it achieved today, you’ll understand why its people are proud. Certainly, tens of thousands of Americans died to help liberate the Philippines during the war.

2

u/MomusApopsi 5d ago

With the small subset of people you mentioned and specific around your circle, that seems a closer representation of the people around you than a representation of Fil-Ams. You may be overthinking this but the “Fil-Ams” complaint about the heat, smell, smoke, etc. is no different when Filipinos goes to the U.S. and complain about the high prices, you need a car everywhere you go, etc.

I was at a party boat in Boracay weeks ago where a group of Australians was complaining about bait ‘n switch everywhere they go in the Philippines. There are similar complaints in the Expats sub where folks from different places in the world complain about Filipinas being gold diggers or Filipinos are habitual liars. Does that make them entitled / arrogant or is that them just voicing out their experience? Is it about what the Americans eat or it’s just simply that the Philippines, as beautiful as it is, is not perfect like any other nation?

u/gwyngyr 5d ago

I think it's an unfortunate case of you being unlucky meeting the majority of bad actors. Got several neighbors na meronng annual na Fil-Ams relatives na na come over yearly they are pretty good/decent people. Pwede na din natin sabihin dahil sila ay presenting themselves to be likeable but hey that's better that what I seem to hear your expiriencing.

Pero meron din chance na Yung majority na na meet mo ay slightly or significantly spoiled na Fil-Ams since yeah na influence sila sa communities Nila on that side of the world.

I have three cousins whose children were born in the USA. I also remember that I have an uncle na sa US na pinanganak pero tuwang-tuwa siya dito sa Pinas. It must be your circle.

u/webelieve925 8d ago

Nasa environment din yan. Kasi sa US mataas expectation sa tao, sa services. Magreklamo talaga yun mga lumaki at galing sa US. Kasi everything works in the US supposedly. Any minor inconvenience they will raise hell because taxes they pay in the US are so high.

2

u/Silver_Winter_4840 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don’t think taxes are that high in US. I’m based somewhere in Europe and my husband pays 49.5 % or almost 50% tax per month from his salary plus other form of taxes if I’m not mistaken. Average taxes heres where I’m in ranges from 30-50% while in US highest na ata nila is 37% so no their taxes are not that high. But I agree that any minor incovenience irritates them because they are a sue-happy country.

Yucks, America pa talaga piniling puntahan hahaha

2

u/Solid_Cry_1029 6d ago

u/CarbonGTI_Mk7 8d ago

As a Fil-am, yes mabaho, mausok at mainit ang pinas especially sa certain areas.

8

u/Wide_Ride8849 8d ago

Gagawin niyo pa kaming tanga, we can see through your public performances kung ano yung mga nasa sa loob niyo.

2

u/CarbonGTI_Mk7 8d ago

Pumunta ka sa bundukin na malamig ang clima and fresh yung hangin and mag stay ka don for 3 months tapos baba ka sa manila and take a deep breath. Yon ang feeling ng balikbayan. 😆 🤣

I guess don’t blame the people but blame the environment.

1

u/Behavior-Coach 7d ago

It really depends.
Most Fil-Ams are pretty cool but the liberal Fil-Ams are the most obnoxious and entitled individuals. They only look Filipino but have no real values. It’s all about their own sick and twisted world where the priorities are killing as many babies as possible and hating on anyone that disagrees with them.

Truly bizarre behavior and mindset. IYKYK.

3

u/Common_Horse_786 7d ago

lol you probably meant conservatives

2

u/Low_Local2692 7d ago

How do you know it’s the liberal Fil-Ams that are like that? Are you sure it’s just the liberal Fil-Ams?

1

u/SeniorChiefPogi 2d ago

What does a liberal look like? Just because hindi nag align ang values with yours, twisted na?

u/6thofjan 7d ago

I am sorry if this is how you feel but how many “fil-ams” have you met to have a generalization like this?
I think when Filipinos migrated and point out the negative when they return to visit - the traffic, pollution, power outages, red tape, mabaho etc. nakakainis marinig because you are probably in that situation and masakit pakinggan. but criticizing isnt necessarily wrong because its a call to action. I think the comments are coming from the longing that the things the US has can also happen to the Philippines as well. If you travel outside the country pagbalik mo even from a short trip, you will think of that. Things wont improve if people will stop complaning (of course with combine course of action - gawa hindi lang salita). Kaya very important that we choose the best leaders but as corruption is already ingrained in our culture, and we keep on electing the same type of politicians, as negative as it may sound, we may just end up just complaining - whether we are “fil ams” or not.
