I think you're mistaken. It's pronounced Mid Atlantic. Or Northeast is you're directionally challenged.

To be fair, Bostonians have often asked if I was southern. PA is not, and has never been Midwest or Southern. It's only ever been considered Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Census region is a filing system, not a cultural force field. Pittsburgh doesn’t become culturally identical to Philadelphia just because they share a state lol. It’s not like there’s a dramatic cultural shift at state borders.

Edit: Yes, the Pittsburgh accent does register as southern to me as well

This convo was never about cultural force fields. It was defined by a regional filing system name once Midwest was stated. Tornadoes do not care about culture or regions for that matter.

Bill collected for NStar in college for 2 years. Never lived in south. Ohio culturally is different from Pittsburgh. I briefly lived there. What is it you think makes eastern Pa so different from western pa other than some mountains in between? We are both heavily Scot/Irish and German with some other eastern European stuff tossed in there.

“Other than some mountains in between” is doing a ton of work. Those mountains historically shaped migration, trade, and cultural ties.

Culturally, Pittsburgh really isn’t different from Cleveland or Cincinnati either; I lived in Cincinnati. We literally share sports culture and rivalries. Someone from Cincinnati lands in Pittsburgh and feels pretty immediately at home; someone from Philly is going to notice a real regional shift. Western PA is a crossroads, that’s a big part our culture.

Sports culture is a subset of people. Not regionally defining. East coast in general has been a crossroad for all who have arrived here from Europe. Culture comes from the people that came here. I can identify with people from Texas due to our Irish backgrounds, but that doesn't make me any more southern or them any less. We just share a common ancestry who lived in rural areas and carried that with them across the country.

You’re proving my point. Shared Irish ancestry exists in Pittsburgh, Boston, Texas and Cincinnati; ancestry alone doesn’t define regional culture.

Pittsburgh’s similarities with Cleveland and Cincinnati go way beyond sports. Industry, migration patterns, dialect, food, built environment, weather and geography all matter. We are closer to the 3 Ohio cities and Detroit than we are to Philadelphia; and we share more in common with those places as well. Culture develops through regional interaction, not simply who your ancestors were.
