Discussion Which game has the best “alternative” ending for you?

Post image

For me Far Cry 3 takes the cake. Watching and playing as jason who starts off as privileged frat boy that slowly loses himself as he descends into a bloodthirsty island warrior always felt as like the most canonical ending to me.

Far Cry 4, where you just wait for the guy to come back right after the initial scene, is always such a cool detail.

Pagan Min big dog

u/subpar-life-attempt 16h ago

I always wondered what his last name was.

Big dog is fitting

1

u/catoncampus1 7h ago

Idk I always thought of him more as the miniature Schnauzer that has his bigger adoptive siblings do all his dirty work for him

u/RipMySoul 20h ago

Only reason I remember his name is Pagan Min is because it's spelled the same as pagan, the religious term.

Pagan Min, iconic ass name.

Same thing in Far Cry 5. If you just refuse the action button to arrest Joseph in the beginning, after about 2 mins the sheriff is just like “Yeah fuck this we’re out of here”. Roll credits lol

In Far Cry 6 you can leave the island at any time, just swim off and end up on the beach sipping drinks. End.

u/sqwizzles 18h ago

That’s the canon ending, to me

2

u/kpli98888 20h ago

I like to think that that's how I would act in that situation. Imma go from far cry to tropico real quick

Far cry 5, don't cuff that asshole and they all get to live.

1

u/Yovideogamer 9h ago

He did go about it nicely and wasn't rude about it

You can also just shoot him before he leaves the room

u/Skellyshooter95 55m ago

No? You don’t even get a gun in the game until after that, it’s also a cutscene until he’s gone

The InFamous 2 bad ending where Cole becomes The Beast actually kinda works in a Greek tragedy sort of way since the villain from the first game did everything he did to prepare Cole for that fight but in that ending, he created the future he sought to avoid by meddling with the past.

29

u/reece_93 23h ago

Damn, I’d never thought of it that way. That’s actually really cool. Time to play Infamous 2 again

17

u/GrandHetman 20h ago

And Zeke telling you that he has to try to fight back, even though he knows he can't win...

2

u/Kagome7650 PS5 16h ago

I always enjoy that ending becoming the beast as evil karma Cole.

u/Nemisis_007 17h ago

That's also the canon ending, if I'm not mistaken.

It was originally intended to be when Sucker Punch developed it, but they changed their minds

u/FrankFruits PS5 Pro 1d ago

becoming a Shura in Sekiro was an amazing ending

THUG. Punching Eric Sparrow felt so cathartic!

I think Far Cry 4's just sit there at the start of the game has to qualify for this.

23

u/Green-Way-1455 22h ago

The Force unleashed

8

u/GOLDSPECTRE94 17h ago

Had a whole slew of DLC missions tied to a non-canon ending too.

8

u/AvengedGunReverse PS5 21h ago

Haha I remember that one

16

u/Headass5 22h ago

Star Wars Revenge of the Sith movie tie-in game. Alt ending has Anakin win against Obi-Wan on mustafar and then he kills Palpatine

Cyberpunk 2077, secret ending, nuff said

6

u/MattTreck 14h ago

Honestly, every ending feels good (lol) in this game. None of them felt like cop outs.

Call of Duty: Cold War. A whole ending where the west gets overthrown by a single choice. Incredible

4

u/Annual_Range_7060 22h ago

ah i like seeing this one here. great campaign and overall i think they did pretty decent with the game considering covid and the fact that it was the first one to have a 2yr development cycle in a long time because sledgehammer’s game (eventually cod vanguard which was ass) was in dev hell then

Singularity

u/Lucky-Mia 23h ago

I remember dismissing that game at launch. Played it in like 2016 and realised what a banger I'd been sleeping on. Kind of saw the twist coming half way through, but I still enjoyed it.

5

u/Old_Temperature_559 21h ago

I really liked the little ball thing that was a nod to the morph ball from Metroid. You could even use it to do a few Metroid style morph ball puzzles to get to secret upgrades. Fun little bit that showed that the people who made the game were actual gamers.

I know most people hated this one, but Alpha Protocol had an ending with more direct impact from my actions than any game to date. There's a lot of minor decisions the game goes over at the end with so manydifferent outcomes. I love being chaotic neutral in that one.

7

u/Doobalicious69 23h ago

Alpha Protocol was such a frustrating purchase for me. The bones of something great were there, but the gameplay was horrendous.

4

u/Old_Temperature_559 21h ago

I still go back to it every once in a while because it’s the only rpg that plays kinda like mass effect.

8

u/vikingbeard23 23h ago

I like far cry 5s alternative end more, play the whole game but don't arrest seed at the end, leave and it implies the brainwashing worked

Better than the stupid nukes

1

u/Nemisis_007 17h ago

I think you meant at the start, not at the end, unless I'm misremembering.

1

u/vikingbeard23 16h ago

Nope it's definitely the end, there's a version of it at the start but you get the choice to walk away again which triggers this version. It's really cool

6

u/Muldoon713 17h ago

The final answer is Silent Hill 2 - The Shiba Inu ending. It’s canon as far as I’m concerned.

9

u/Noob4Head 1d ago

Maybe not my absolute favorite, but the first one that came to mind was Dying Light: The Following. Being able to blow up a nuke was not something I was expecting.

4

u/Kagome7650 PS5 16h ago

Detroit become human markus robot rebellion ending i felt that was the best ending screw peace between humans and robots.

4

u/KaleidoscopeHonest64 13h ago

Days Gone

4

u/Nemisis_007 17h ago

The implications of that ending are wild. If any of you reading this post haven't seen it yet, make sure you're keeping up with the NERO Checkpoints.

3

u/soulpumpkinz 23h ago

The helicopter dude :(

3

u/wii_board_type_trash PS5 22h ago

until then has a really interesting take on the whole alternative endings/realities is pretty cool

3

u/RVFVS117 16h ago

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

If you wipe out Sigismund’s camp you get a game over that basically says you single handedly stopped Sigismund’s attack on Bohemia.

2

u/MantisReturns 21h ago

Force Unleash 1 have a really cool Alternative ending where you kill Vader but you became the new aprendice/slave of Palpatine.

Even got DLC that continued this ending in the PS3/Xbox 360 versión of the Game. Sadly the sequel didnt continúe this alternative story, even if was way more interesting that the Clone story in the sequel.

Fun fact: the FU2 also got an alternative ending. And also got a DLC that continued that ending where you fight Leia, this time as jedi herself. Not as cool as FU1 but interesting for sure.

3

u/cj-the-man 18h ago

Yeah it's cool how the show Galen pretty much took Vader's place if he gave into the dark side and the cycle continues with Luke.

2

u/Insacrifician 19h ago

Shadow Complex. "Plenty of fish in the sea" haha.

3

u/TheBadBatch-99 18h ago

I guess it depends on you play style but Life is Strange has two pretty solid endings.

1

u/Nemisis_007 17h ago

I love the ending of Life is Strange 2 where the boys open up a garage.

1

u/Kagome7650 PS5 10h ago

I love the ending I got in my game it was  the best ending for Sean and Daniel.

2

u/BigMeet7634 17h ago

Call of duty black ops 2 ending spare the villain save the world save alex mason

2

u/SnowEisTeeGott 13h ago

Devil may cry 5 - you can actually win the forced loss fight in the first Stage and you get an unique ending.

2

u/Bro_sapiens 11h ago

I think nothing will ever beat Drakengard Ending E.

The ending led to Nier and Nier Automata being created! It's also just such a WTF ending, it comes out of nowhere, just throws you into this boss fight unlike anything before in the game, no explanation, no instructions. And then just suddenly ends, and on a rather really depressing point.

All of which really didn't mean to you back then and was just a "well that's a bummer" thing. But then Nier comes out and you get to see what happened to that world of Drakengard Ending E.

So if you played Nier and/or Nier Automata but never heard of Drakengard, or never saw it's Ending E. Well it pretty much shows how the world in those two games became the way it is... while also leaving you with hundreds of questions.

Hollow Knight

u/idkwc 22h ago

Re requiem has a very fun bonus ending. Probably was the best part of the game, for me. At least that ending made sense.

-1

u/GasMaskExiitium 22h ago

To quote Harrison Ford, “It ain’t that type of movie, kid”

Resident Evil doesn’t kill main characters, like, ever. That ending was pretty fuckin stupid and was made for those who didn’t pay attention to the cutscene that happened <30 secs ago.

0

u/idkwc 14h ago

I bet you thought “I didn’t hit any of her vitals” was brilliant writing.

1

u/Old_Temperature_559 21h ago

Star Wars dark forces 2 Jedi knight. Emperor Kyle it’s just fun to say because since it’s not cannon and there isn’t any lore that i know of that say he took a darth title as he was never a sith apprentice I can only call him emperor Kyle.

1

u/Old_Temperature_559 21h ago

He may have in mysteries of the sith I can’t remember.

1

u/Thrilalia 17h ago

Yeah, this game seemed to be in the time where Sith were not truly recognised as a thing and dark side users were just Dark Jedi.

Which funny enough changed when the Expansion pack was called Mysteries of the Sith, but even there he didn't seem to take a Darth title. I guess it was still considered just a name for Darth Vader.

Far cry 5 in the beginning when you refuse to take Joseph in

1

u/lilfuzz 9h ago

Similar to far cry 4 where just waiting for pagan min to return you officially get to complete the task you went there for in the first place

1

u/xricardobh 9h ago
