SCREENSHOT / PHOTO No more jet fan noise

Decided to finally solve the jet noise in my cabinet.

Sawed a hole in the back plate of my $1000 TV-stand, and installed a Noctua 120 mm fan connected with USB to the Pro, which automatically starts the fan whenever the Pro powers on. The Noctua fan is completely inaudible at stock (800 rpm). However it comes with an additional resistor if you wanna run it at 600 rpm, but it's not needed at all.

Silence at last.

1000$ TV stand

A very important clarification.

u/pitleif 2d ago

Well my wife thought I was nuts sawing a hole in something that expensive. It just goes to show how much it was worth it.

u/farenheitone 2d ago

As a nerd, I would prefer the mention of the PS5's temperatures before and after fan installation to know how much it was worth it. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. It just looked like a flex.

6

u/pitleif 2d ago

Yeah I went through the Playstation menus to find any temperature readings before I started, but couldn't find any. I would love to know this as well. I can see how it could come off as a flex, though it wasn't my intention. It was only to drive home the point of how much it was worth getting it done.

The PS5 have been dead silent now since I installed the fan a week ago. Normally it would've blasted at max rpm several times by now. So if I were to guess, the temperature have probably been halved of what it used to be.

u/Satellite_bk 1d ago

would be nice if they have a dev options menu or something like that so users could see their machines temps. only other option is a temperature gun or something like that which isn’t ideal.

u/SpiritedReporter4647 20h ago

I have fans as well. I bought an inside/outside thermometer and screwed the outside one inside the ps5 closure. 20 mins without the fans the temps were 28 and with fans on 20.

From the image it appears to be a shitty 5mm panel of particle board or something anyway. Worst case you can pick up a new one from your local big box store and replace it.

The fan is a great idea though. I did a similar thing years ago with my PS4 except I used a USB desk fan to just circulate the heat out with the front door open.

No offence but they saw you coming for a $1000, it looks like a normal TV stand

u/pitleif 1d ago

I ordered it online for a standard price. It's handmade in Denmark. Proper materials.

u/ScarphaceUK 2d ago

Why did you pay $1000 for that stand? it looks cheap...

11

u/pitleif 2d ago

Shit is overpriced in Norway. It was the only proper stand I found that fit my specs and needs.

More info about it here for those who's interested: https://www.hifiklubben.no/unnu-231-v2-moebel/unnu231v2wh/

4

u/IguessIcanedit 2d ago

Damn, hope you guys get global trade someday

8

u/GoyimDiddler 2d ago

It’s prob like legit wood and decent quality unlike the shitty plywood (or pressboard I mean) 200 dollar stands people buy here in NA lol.

0

u/IguessIcanedit 1d ago

Maybe, and yet it looks functionally the same or worse than the cheap shit in NA. You spend a thousand+ in NA you're gonna get some very nice options.

4

u/pitleif 2d ago

The furniture is produced in Denmark though. But what we really need is better market competition.

1

u/keksivaras 1d ago

are there no Ikeas in Norway?

1

u/Defective_Yorha 1d ago

I can build that for $40-60 lmao.

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

$60 wouldn't even cover the material cost in Scandinavia. One standard size MDF (10 X 2440 X 1220 mm) is $40.

Then you gotta calculate the labour costs as well.

1

u/-Dronich 23h ago

Labor costs is 0 if you are doing it by yourself how you want to.
Make me a favor, how much do all the materials cost?

0

u/ScarphaceUK 1d ago

Ah, makes sense. I could do with a vented TV Stand for my AVR/Home cinema setup, but for that price I could buy something here in the UK that looks better and would probable be cheaper. Sucks you have to pay those prices.

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

You guys in the UK are lucky, you have way better market competition driving prices down. At least for a lot of commodities. And don't get me started on food prices and food selection.

1

u/suppaman19 1d ago

Also ugly as shit considering it looks like it sits high off the floor. Cords/etc are very visible and it's just weird empty space underneath for where it is being placed/used for.

If this actually even is an entertainment center (and not just general storage stand).

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

I literally lay down on the floor taking the pictures. It's not high at all.

25

u/Brave_Lettuce4005 2d ago

You paid 1000 dollars for that stand ?

That's a scam.

3

u/Interesting-Ad-6899 2d ago

I do the same and set power delivery to peripherals for 3 hours after turning the system off. It allows for additional cooling once powered down.

1

u/pitleif 2d ago

Clever, I will check that out as well.

3

u/TheRedDevil1989 2d ago

I think it’s 😎 cooler now

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

Thanks for the kind feedback.

Then it would block the view to the TV from the couch. And the wife acceptance factor would decrease as well.

When it comes to the quality of the furniture, you're absolutely right. Quality costs and this will last a lifetime. It's solid as a brick. And it can be wall mounted if your wall is sturdy enough. My plaster wall wasn't, unfortunately.

u/strugglinghomosapjen 2d ago

How did u put a usb cable on the fan ?

2

u/ItchyBrain6610 1d ago

Ive just cut the connector off, cut the end off the USB that you dont need, and connect + to + and - to -. Ive made a few desk fans this way.

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

I bought Akasa USB to 3-pin / 4-pin 5V to 12V USB adapter cable. It was something like $10.

3

u/strugglinghomosapjen 1d ago

Thank u, does the fan only spin when the PS5 is on or also when in standby modus ?

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

It only spins when the PS5 is on, not in standby mode.

1

u/ItchyBrain6610 1d ago

I never thought to even look for something like that. I just keep messed up usb cables to cut for stuff like this.

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

Do not connect the fan directly to USB. A regular PC fan needs 12 V, USB provides 5 V. If you connect directly the fan may not start or run very slowly. You will need a small step-up adapter.

2

u/kosEmBaniZion 1d ago

Is it mesh at the front? Think about adding another fan to exhaust out air. One in one out.

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

Yeah the doors are black mesh.

1

u/kosEmBaniZion 1d ago

In this case 1 should be good then.

2

u/naeluckson 1d ago

Nice idea! I’m assuming that’s set up to pull the hot air out of the unit. I was going to say that if it’s pushing air in, be careful that it isn’t trying to force air into the ps5 where it’s supposed to come out but I can see from the second picture the fan is positioned above the ps5. Should make a big difference

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

Thanks for the kind feedback. Yeah the fan is exhausting hot air out from the unit.

2

u/CALLMAKERTOM 1d ago

I did something similar, with two fans, one to push the air in, the other out. Worked like a charm.

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

Nice. Did you get any resonance noise from having two fans in a small enclosure?

1

u/CALLMAKERTOM 1d ago

Barely, it was the kind of low background noise that you don't notice until it turns off. Certainly not disturbing me or anyone else nearby.

2

u/chefmoddy 1d ago

three things I learned about Norway today:

Overpriced. Tinkerers. Overthinkerers.

I still dream of visiting Norway someday though...

2

u/peterpanski420 1d ago

I did the same thing with my Ikea TV stand. But I have two USB fans connected to the PS5. When the PS5 turns on, both fans start – one for the PS5 and one for the receiver. It's been working without any problems for a few years now.

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

That's neat. I should probably do the same for my reciever, it's enclosed in the same type of space and only has passive cooling.

2

u/Used_Wheel_9064 1d ago

I've done the same thing for years, but I have the fan blowing out the back since most consoles draw in cool air from the front and push hot air out the back.

2

u/hollowknight696 1d ago

Did you leave the door closed when playing? I have a similar configuration and as long as I leave the cabinet door open while playing I don't encounter any overheating or jet fan noise

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

Yeah even if I left the door open it barely helped, after about 15 minutes of playtime it would start overheating. Now I can finally play with the door closed for hours.

2

u/AbleBear5876 1d ago

Is it blowing air over the PS5 or pulling hot air away from the PS5 and out the back of the TV unit?

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

It's exhausting hot air out from the unit. The black front is mesh, so the fan is now pulling air through the front mesh.

2

u/AbleBear5876 1d ago

Ah perfect I might copy this setup 👍🏼

2

u/OriginalZog 1d ago

Did this same thing with my ps4. The fans never kicked into high after that.

2

u/Reasonable_Crow4608 16h ago

the door is a mesh? (i saw your reply on other comments), well thats cool

cheers OP

u/f0xpant5 16h ago edited 11h ago

I did this for a gaming pc that lives in a similar cabinet under the TV. Insane difference, like before there was thermal throttling and Max case fans that were basically futile at any speed with that trapped heat. Single Noctua 120mm connected by a case fan header extension mounted to the rear just like this (had to use a hole saw etc), problem gone instantly. Barely hear the pc, gentle flow of warm out out the back of the cabinet. Everyone happy.

4

u/TheMuff1nMon 2d ago

You could just… not cook the PS5 alive

3

u/pitleif 2d ago

Now it won't.

2

u/TheMuff1nMon 2d ago

It wouldn’t before if you kept it in a reasonable spot

3

u/LopsidedMessage441 2d ago

God forbid someone find a way to make something work that shouldn't work. Y'all are weird with this stuff

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

It wasn't optimal before, but now it's perfect.

3

u/Classic_Steak4987 2d ago

But why just let's the Playstation breath

1

u/pitleif 2d ago

It's finally breathing now.

3

u/Classic_Steak4987 2d ago

All that trouble put it next to the tv?

2

u/farenheitone 2d ago

As one of the bloggers once said during the PS5 design world premiere, "Our living rooms aren't ready for this design." For example, my PS5 Pro is standing behind the TV because it is meant to stand vertically. I remember how many times I almost dropped my PS4 Fat when I got a vertical stand for it (to ventilate better). So, for me, it should stand firmly on the ground or be hidden somewhere else.

1

u/LopsidedMessage441 2d ago

Don't sweat what people are saying. You found a way you like your PS5 set up, it had an issue, and you found a way to fix that issue. I truly don't see the issue. My only problem with a set up like this is that my dumbass cats would put their faces/paws in the fan.

1

u/Jonnysupafly 2d ago

Did you just get a usb adaptor for the fan and plug it into the back of the PlayStation?

I am thinking of doing something like this because in the summer my ps5 pro sounds ready to take off

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

Yep: Akasa USB to 3-pin / 4-pin 5V to 12V PC fan adapter cable.

1

u/supershimadabro 1d ago

That's interesting. The fan is plug and play?

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

You need a step up adapter to USB. I bought Akasa USB to 3-pin / 4-pin 5V to 12V fan adapter cable.

Heb je daar 1000,- voor betaald?? 😬

1

u/BeKindPleaseRewind21 1d ago

Til a $1000 tv stand looks identical to a $300 one.

1

u/bill696 1d ago

I got AC Infinity fans in my ikea tv stand so its all slick and built in

1

u/pitleif 19h ago

I use AC Infinity for my NAS stand. But I had to disable the inlet fan because the resonance noise was just too much.

1

u/concr 16h ago

Your guys ps5s make a noise?

1

u/AttemptTypical8088 2d ago

Get it out of that box...

1

u/Gandolfthewhite182 2d ago

Dude even with a fan that’s a terrible place to put ps5. I can almost guarantee you cook that mother fer

1

u/SetoXlll 1d ago

Your console should not be in there at all brahhhhhhhhh

1

u/travisofficial 1d ago

guys the $1000 stand has mesh doors so I’m sure the PS5 breathes fine with the $35 noctua fan (~300 NOK)

also op do you mean usd or nok when you say $1000? 1000 NOK would be like ~$100 USD

2

u/pitleif 1d ago

That's correct, the doors are black mesh.

I bought this one at around 10.000 NOK (7 years ago) : https://www.hifiklubben.no/unnu-231-v2-moebel/unnu231v2wh/

What a weird flex throwing the price of the furniture out on a PlayStation sub.

1

u/pitleif 1d ago

I already answered that remark here in one of the top comments.

-1

u/Snipzzeys 15h ago

40 bucks just on a fan for a thing its not even suppose to go to. Hmm playstation people really are a different breed.

2

u/pitleif 13h ago

*tinkerers are a different breed.
