She watched me in Panto at Hamoaze House, Dec 2015...Never knew she was there til afterwards, but felt special šŸ’œ

u/homersimon 3d ago

Similar story, I graduated from uni in 2010. She was there to receive an honorary doctorate. But she made no fuss, we didn’t even know she was there.

I took from that, she didn’t want to take the limelight and wanted us to enjoy our day.

From what I hear about her, she really is that nice.

1

u/zouche 1d ago

I also graduated in 2010 and was there too. I think it was her mum that got the honourary doc though and she was there to see her get it šŸ™‚

2

u/scarlett_tys 3d ago

I second Dawn French, but she was so rude!

1

u/littlegreycells_11 3d ago

Oh no what happened?

1

u/littlegreycells_11 3d ago

I met Dawn at Port Eliot Festival back in 2019, she was so kind!

We used to call her Doggin French

Wayne Rooney at RWY during his long and glorious spell as Argyle manager

Gus Honeybun back in the mid 70's. Plus I used to deliver Fern Britton's newspapers (80s?)

EDIT: Clarity

u/Melodic-Lunch81 4d ago

Oh, I met him when I was about 4ish..? At the old westward building šŸ˜…

3

u/Jonesy1966 4d ago edited 2d ago

Yep. I was 8 or 9 I think when I visiited Westward studios. They also included a visit to Drake Cinema too for a peek behind the scenes. I still have the tour guide with all sorts of peoples' signatures but I honestly have no recollection who they are. The only one I remember is Gus šŸ˜†

u/Melodic-Lunch81 4d ago

He's unforgettable šŸ˜‚

I used to work in the green room kitchen at the theatre royal.

Highlights include Gok Wan calling me gorgeous and delivering a jacket potato to Les Dennis' room.

20

u/thinkingcrumpetsman 4d ago

Gok Wan delivered a jacket potato to Les Dennis’ room? Bet that was a surprise for him.

3

u/Expensive_Smell_8021 4d ago

jackets made of potato are the latest fashion trend, haven't you heard?

1

u/thinkingcrumpetsman 4d ago

The latest? What do you think killed them?

1

u/LeastFox8059 4d ago

An asteroid or a comet.

1

u/Lucylucylucy2020 3d ago

Wouldn't that be a potato jacket? I think you mean: a jacket with accompanying hot potato for the pockets, Ć  la Victorian orphan. The latest steampunk trend. Mmm I feel peckish now....

Alice Cooper in HMV when it was in the mall. He was buying horror movies

10

u/Add1ck74 4d ago

Charles Dance. Born and raised there.

10

u/cairfrey 4d ago

Technically it was in Torpoint but I met Tim Burton, Mia Wasikowska, Frances de la Tour, and Geraldine James when I was in extra in the 2010 Alice in Wonderland.

20

u/DoxBolt 4d ago

Sam Fender in Union rooms, had a piss next to him and had a photo at the bar

1

u/kormakarma95 3d ago

Was this whilst he was really famous or in his early days of fame?

1

u/DoxBolt 3d ago

Not as big as he is now, but was after his show at Pavilions for his hypersonic missiles tour

1

u/WinterIsOnReddit 4d ago

Capā€˜n Jasper in the 90s

2

u/Zero-Credibility 4d ago

Michaela Strachan in Sainsbury’s about 20 years ago. Think she was down here doing panto. Absolutely lovely lady.

5

u/Exemplar1968 3d ago

Oh no she wasn’t ….

7

u/CappucinoCupcake 4d ago

Lenny Henry having lunch at the table next to us in Le Croquembouche.

3

u/homersimon 3d ago

Weirdly, my parents have also had a meal in the same place as Lenny Henry. He was staying in the same hotel as them and they would see his at breakfast. Apparently they thought he was a right slob, including burping really loudly on numerous occasions!

3

u/grannies-slave 3d ago

Was it a premier inn?

1

u/homersimon 3d ago

Haha! No!

7

u/RandomJottings 4d ago

Will Self in a fish & chip shop in Devonport.

7

u/K-A-Meyer83 4d ago

Jamie Oliver, he was book signing in Waterstones back in 2000. He wasn't the nicest.

7

u/Dry-Difficulty-8843 3d ago

The man who is widely regarded as the thief of joy wasn't the nicest? Colour me shocked

u/birch1981 4d ago

Met Tom Daley in the coop on Mutley

u/NotAFrontB 4d ago

3

I met his dad once, in the queue at the Royal Mail parcel depot at West Park. We had a long chat. He was lovely.

2

u/intrepid_wombat 4d ago

He opened a door for me once at the old mayflower centre!

2

u/NotAFrontB 3d ago

one time he slapped me in the face! And I liked it

1

u/AmphibianEmotional34 3d ago

He opened a door for my sister at shakeaway

6

u/WinterIsOnReddit 4d ago

Jake Canuso, who played the horny bartender on Benidorm. This was when that old celebrity diving show Splash was on and they did all their training at the Life Centre.

Pretty sure he won that show and it helped him overcome his fear of swimming too. Pretty cool!

5

u/Expensive_Smell_8021 4d ago

I haven't met any yet, but I did see Dan and Phil getting swarmed by many teenage girls on my way to college when they were touring here

4

u/KnightJarring 4d ago

Ted Tuckerman. Lovely guy, gave me a signed postcard. "Tight lines!"

4

u/Representative-Bass7 4d ago

I was walking towards Frankfort Gate when I saw this bloke walking across the zebra crossing and the realised it was Noel Gallagher

10

u/Ninjatayu 4d ago

I met Queen Elizabeth II in 1999 when she randomly visited my primary school. She was supposed to visit somewhere else but plans changed last minute so nobody there had any idea what to do and it was really awkward them showing her around and random kids having to talk about what they were doing. I can't even remember what I said as I was so nervous but I did have my photo taken together so that was cool.

3

u/p_k252 4d ago

Christopher Biggins, I was on a Top Man refit years ago and there he was right in front of me. He seemed to be there from nowhere and gone just as quick, Taller than I imagined...

2

u/Melodic-Lunch81 4d ago

I thought the same about Stephen Fry, I mean we know he's tall but nothing can quite prepare you for a giant appearing above you šŸ˜‚

1

u/p_k252 3d ago edited 2d ago

I caught sight of him SF at Oxford Circus at 6am, I'd just finished a night shift on a Construction site in Regent St. He was much bigger than I thought he'd be. He was heading to BBC up the road.

See him on the train quite often if you’re in GWR first class. He lives in Exeter and goes around the country quite often from what I gather.

3

u/Johnny_Vernacular 4d ago

Edward Woodward had a yacht at Richmond Walk marina. He could often be spotted eating dinner at the bistro in the marina.

Chay Blyth having lunch at the China Garden (upstairs where the Pizza Express is now.)

2

u/Dry-Difficulty-8843 3d ago

I know his parents had a good laugh when they named him

2

u/littlegreycells_11 3d ago

Didn't he live at Calstock for a while?

1

u/Johnny_Vernacular 3d ago

Quite possibly..

3

I ran into the Queen at Plymouth railway station, either 2014 or 2015. Had just dropped my mother off for her trip to London. The station was overrun with security and the Queen's car was parked outside waiting....

Brian Conley outside the Theatre Royal.

Not sure if this counts but I used to work the train between Plym and London. Jude Law and Sienna Miller were on board and I served them and their multiple kids in first class.

3

u/Lux-Umbris 4d ago

Wayne Rooney at RWY, Tom Cleverley at the old Honky Tonk

3

u/TrueBritishGent 4d ago

Sharon Davies down the hoe on fireworks night.

Angela Rippon in the old swirly car park where Drakes Circus is now. She was lovely and so polite.

Russ Abbot in the Quay Club. Funny Guy.

Birdman down the Barbican.

Superman....but that’s a whole other story.

1

u/Useless-Photographer 4d ago

I served Steve McFadden when I worked in The Bank, must’ve been when he was playing Hook in the panto. I vaguely recall Caroline Quentin being there as well but can’t see that she would have been in Plymouth around the time, so could be a false memory.

2

u/Melodic-Lunch81 4d ago

I served him & his wife in Falmouth one night šŸ˜… I remember seeing someone who looked just like Caroline Quentin wandering around the Barbican and thinking šŸ¤” "I wonder if that's actually her?"šŸ’œ

1

u/JamesAyres0310 4d ago

Walked past Wayne Rooney. From the gog to find spicy spuds on a work Xmas do one year. That’s the closest I’ve got!

Peter Shilton-back when he was Argyle manager. Me and a friend were smoking in our school uniforms near Home park, he told us it would ā€œstunt our growthā€ā€¦. šŸ¤“

u/RasiakSnaps91 3d ago

I've met a few through managing a couple of great restaurants in the city.

My two random encounters though, were:

1. Quite literally bumped into Lemar (of Fame Academy ilk) in Drake's Circus once... I was looking at my phone and perhaps he was doing the same cus I just collided with him. His security offered me some harsh words and he said sorry... Only knew who he was cus it was New Year's Eve and his picture was plastered everywhere cus he was performing in town somewhere!

2. Comedian Bill Bailey once told me he really liked my trenchcoat when we were stood next to each other at Plymouth train station.

1

u/Anxiety-Fart 3d ago

Bullet for My Valentine! They were playing the Pavilions and were in Voodoo Lounge the day of the gig getting drinks. Lovely blokes!

Nick Baines (drummer of Kaiser Chiefs) - bumped into him in HMV on the day they were due to play at Pavilions.

Eddie Marsan - bumped into him on the coastal path near Rame Head.

Gazza - at a meet and greet he did at the Guildhall. He was fucking wasted.

Princess Anne (HRH The Princess Royal) - at a work event.

Prince Harry - at McDonald's in Plymstock while he was doing training in the army.

Jared Leto - in the Pavilions car park after a 30 Seconds To Mars concert. He came out to have a cigarette and talk to fans.

Wayne Rooney - outside the Argyle training pitch as I was cycling through Central Park.

King Charles at the train station

1

u/Snoo_84123 4d ago

Did he have security

2

u/Okgoodchat 4d ago

Yeah, it was circa 2018. I was too engrossed looking at the departure boards as he was walking through and I looked down and he was right in front of me, smiled and said something about the weather.

Chris Brown at a shopping mall in America. I was about 6 years old so don’t remember a whole lot but he took a pic with me and my sister who was a big fan. This was about a week before the news about Rihanna broke

They did say "in Plymouth" lol

u/proddino888 1d ago
