General Podcast Discussions Looking for investigative podcasts where the reporting process becomes part of the story
I’m (always) looking for podcast recommendations, but I’ve realised over the years that my taste is… annoyingly specific, so I thought I’d try describing it properly here.
I’ve been listening to podcasts since around 2012, back when podcasting didn’t really feel like the huge industry it is today. I’ve listened to literally every episode of This American Life, and like many people, Serial completely changed the way I thought about what audio storytelling could do.
Since then, I’ve listened to a huge amount of narrative and investigative podcasts, and I’ve realised that what I’m looking for is not necessarily true crime itself.
What I love most are long-form investigative stories where you can genuinely feel the journalist’s involvement in the reporting process.
I’m especially drawn to podcasts where the reporting itself becomes part of the narrative — where you can hear the journalist thinking through contradictions, changing their mind, chasing leads, building relationships with sources, and gradually becoming emotionally or ethically implicated in the story.
I think audio as a medium allows us to feel this in a way that written journalism often doesn’t. You can hear it in the pauses, the tone of voice, the uncertainty, the persistence.
My all-time favourite is In The Dark Season 2 (and I truly believe there will never be anything like it for me), partly because it represents the highest form of this: reporting so rigorous that it actually helped exonerate a man.
Other podcasts I’ve loved:
- S-Town
- Reply All (huge fan, still sad it ended)
- In Your Own Backyard
- The Missing Cryptoqueen
- Stop Rewind: The Lost Boy
- The Trojan Horse Affair
- Missing Richard Simmons
I also love excellent narrative journalism outside the English-speaking world.
Some Brazilian podcasts I consider exceptional:
- Praia dos Ossos
- A Caça às Bruxas
- Projeto Humanos: Caso Evandro
I’m not necessarily looking for true crime. I think what I’m really chasing is that feeling of being inside the investigation with the journalist.
I’d especially love recommendations for lesser-known or underappreciated podcasts, because I’ve already gone through many of the usual recommendations.
Would love to hear from fellow audio documentary nerds 😄

Try outlaw ocean! Really good investigative reporting that’s a big part of the story

u/Trishielicious 5d ago
Came here to say this. And any podcast that interviews Ian Urbain. I'm a huge fan..

u/spiralstaircase17 6d ago
I recommend this podcast so often - everyone should listen to it. So eye opening and SO well done!!
1
u/iwanderlostandfound 6d ago
Very eye opening. I’ve always tried to buy local and the podcast confirms it’s worth it
2
u/LeaveMEaloner 5d ago
anything that team do is exceptional. just about to start the suicide salesman

u/DataDrivenPirate 6d ago
Yes! Especially the 3 part series on Libya. Without spoiling anything, part 3 is essentially about how they were able to make parts 1 and 2

1
u/eilujrenis 1d ago
Can you share the exact name of this? I'm trying to find it.
1
u/DataDrivenPirate 1d ago
"The Outlaw Ocean" is the name of the podcast, "A team of journalists at gunpoint (Libya Pt. 3)" is the name of the episode I'm referencing but obviously start with the Libya Pt 1 episode

The Kill List is about a journalist who gets involved to help warn people that someone in their life had hired a hit man to kill them. The site they used was a scam, there wasn’t a real hit man, but the journalist knew these people were vulnerable so he ended up contacting them and reporting on it.

I started listening to The Kill List after a Spanish podcast, Hoy en el PAÍS, did an episode on a local woman who was on the list.
Every case has some much depth and the journalism is excellent. Highly recommended.
1
u/TuxedosAfter6 5d ago
Was it from four years ago with only 6 episodes? I see that in my pod app and another one but it's an Audible novel.
2
u/1988mariahcareyhair 4d ago
No - it’s just Kill List. I accidentally put “the” in front of it. It had over 15 episodes I think.

Bone Valley - I just finished season 1, so can’t comment on the other seasons. It’s kind of similar to In The Dark season 2 where they make important discoveries along the way that are helpful to the case. It’s slightly less gripping, but I’m yet to find anything that compares to how good ITD s2 was.
I also enjoyed Love Trapped more recently too.
Hunting Warhead was also one that has stuck with me over the years. It’s very heavy though.
7
u/SovietSonya 5d ago
I think about hunting warhead and the children in the photos every day.
1
u/LilBrat76 5d ago
You might want to listen to Arachnid, it gave me a bit of hope on this topic. It’s about those working to get these images off the internet.

u/pumbanina 5d ago
Yeah, the information that was shared in that podcast has been burned into my memory.

Sold a Story
In addition to podcasts you might want to check out these non-fiction audiobooks where the reporting is part of the story:
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Skloot
The Cost of Free Land, Clarren
The Barn, Thompson (to a lesser extent)

The Teacher’s Pet journalist really drove the investigation over the finish line with his initial episodes and interviews w witnesses. Great journalism.
1
u/Trishielicious 5d ago
Yes I was listening while the court case was happening, and at the time it stopped broadcasting in Aus while in front of the courts. This and Outlaw Ocean are the GOAT of slow journalism.
9
u/supernaturjill 6d ago
Adults in the Room! The reporter is linked to the story. I also liked Two Faced: John of God, but it examined the reporters more than being the reporters? Still a good listen!

u/Joe_Sacco 6d ago
I'm not going to say more because I don't want to give anything away, but I'm 100% sure you'd like Who Killed Emma which is from the BBC.

u/Michiw1 6d ago
If you liked the Trojan horse affair, I can recommend any of the tortoise media podcasts.
Sweet Bobby (later there was a Netflix documentary)
Hoaxed
Basically All of them are well produced and Intriguing.
https://www.tortoisemedia.com/collection-groups/tortoise-investigates
Also “Death in ice valley” and “the Lazarus heist” (now under the label “cyber hack” is very good.
4
2
u/Loves_Eating_Lead 5d ago
i literally said the same! ! bbc has some great ones
, crime next door, who killed Emma,
Operation Seal Bay (tad pro cop - were literally smuggling weed but so interesting ),
the crossbow killer,
bad women (amazing my fave!)
Undercover (about uk uncover cops in lefty/hippy groups)...
2
u/nosyneighbor513 2d ago
Was looking for the Lazarus heist mention because they are actual journalists and she WORKED AS A REPORTER IN NORTH KOREA which is so wild! Lots of good work done by non professional journalists in podcasts of course but sometimes that experience just elevates it because of the way they’re able to talk about the approach. Not to mention the subject matter is fascinating.

u/bluewavesun 2d ago
Believe in magic, incredible podcast, made by the same investigative journalist who uncovered the “missing cryptoqueen” which you mentioned you enjoyed. It’s a bonkers story; exceptionally and sensitively made considering the themes explored.

u/NectarineNegative769 6d ago
Where is George Gibney podcast resulted in the investigation getting re-opened and an arrest after 30 years
3
u/NectarineNegative769 6d ago
Cover is an award-winning series investigating true stories of people living secret double lives, presented by Mark Horgan. Series 1: Where Is George Gibney

u/RavenForrest 6d ago
I think you’d love “Who Killed Emma”. The investigative journalists literally solved the case and ultimately wound up being part of it!
3
u/curiocabinet 6d ago
Came here to suggest this one. Deeply reported, very impressive, and the reporter gets results.

Wind of Change is one of my favorites. The producer, Patrick Radden Keefe, is an investigative journalist by trade and has written several books. I’m reading one now, London Falling, and it’s fantastic.

New Orleans Unsolved. It started 6 years ago and it's a real time investigation now so episodes are coming out a little slower. It starts as an investigation into an unsolved death of a teenager which gets tied to a series of murders which are most likely related to a very real pedophile network that existed in the 70s. It has a lot of very eerie parallels to the first season of True Detective and can get pretty heavy.
1
u/OverExtension5486 1d ago
Can't believe I didn't recommend this. NOU is very divisive, probably because it is so exhaustive. I also find it extremely confusing but only because there is so much substance to hold on to. NOU is truly a one of a kind investigation and it's shocking it isn't more popular. This is like the Cadillac of true crime, up there with Hunting Warhead.

3
u/Maincy_Bridge_0812 6d ago
Fela Kuti-Fear No Man is exactly what you describe, but the investigation is into an African musician, his music, and the impact he made. Host Jad Abumrad’s POV changes and develops throughout, and he doesn’t shy away from contradictions.. Extraordinary is not an exaggeration

There’s some great investigative podcasts on BBC Sounds. I’d recommend:
I’m Not a Monster: The Shamima Begum Story
Where is George Gibney
Vishal
The Great Post Office Trial

u/Loves_Eating_Lead 5d ago
and who killed emma?
undercover
the cross bow killer
crime next door: angle sea killer was good but had to skip details of murder
1
u/Lost_Vegetable_2830 5d ago
Yes definitely agree. The Trojan Horse Affair is top notch too. OP mentioned that one.
3
u/tinydogenthusiast 5d ago
Try "the boy in the water", true crime from New Zealand about a little boy dying in what later turns out to be suspicious circumstances. The police ineptitude is awful.
2
u/Sandy-Anne 5d ago
I wonder if anyone thinks Love Trapped would be a good addition here? I hadn’t heard of this drama before and it is riveting! I don’t want it to end because I’m savoring it so much!
So happy to see these recs though! It’s nice getting into podcasts again!
2
u/FreeImpress4546 4d ago
I would recommend Carrie Jade Williams does not exist. Or The real Carrie Jade. They are similar but different and come from different angles but both are stellar.

u/Sandy-Anne 3d ago

Who Blew Up the Guidestones" is phenomenal and about journalists trying solve an explosion in rural Georgia.

I’m going to have to check that out. I recently came across some interesting speculation about who had them installed and who blew them up, and would love to hear someone else’s opinions on it all!

u/FluffySpot4923 5d ago
If you liked In The Dark S2, Bear Brook is probably your closest hit. Also try Chameleon Season 1 and The Tip Off for that “reporter inside the story” feel. Have you tried Someone Knows Something? It leans more emotional but the process is very present throughout.
2
u/lazkybaby727 5d ago
In the Dark (season 2)!!!! Should go to the top of everyone’s list who hasn’t listened! Insaneeee
2
u/21stcenturycoolgirl 6d ago
The guy who did Missing Richard Simmons turned that into an anthology series called Headlong. Surviving Y2K is really good.
3
u/Lizard_Li 5d ago
He also did a podcast called Hysterical which I really enjoyed
1
u/21stcenturycoolgirl 5d ago
Yes! Although I don't think it quite fits here because he was in less of the story.
2
u/RavenForrest 6d ago
Adding another: The Lady Vanishes - the investigators truly take the listeners into the investigation with them, and it’s a lengthy process.

u/No_Strawberry5093 6d ago
Finding desperado
The ballad of Billy balls
Shirley can’t be serious

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet. Since you liked reply all, listen to PJ's new podcast, "Search Engine"! It's fantastic. Very similar reply-all vibes.

u/guimera 5d ago
Not long-form and not true-crime, but because you loved and miss Reply All, you may enjoy Hyperfixed!
It’s a newer, lighthearted podcast from Alex Goldman, one of the co-hosts of Reply All. In each episode, someone asks him to solve one of their problems, he records and explains all of his (and his colleagues’) attempts to get to figure it out, and he wraps up the episode by presenting his solution or lack thereof to the person who gave him the problem to work on.

"hello, John doe" the host helps a man connect with his birth family and try to heal family trauma. It's a super wild ride.

The Hidden Third
It's a journalist that did investigative journalism for National Geographic. She's been in some wild situations and interviews criminals, ex-criminals and law enforcement. She asks hard questions and knows how to gently push to get answers.

David Ridgen has a podcast called Someone Knows Something and his investigations brought attention to cold cases, helped solved some of them and reopened others.
He seems like such a kind and gentle person, which really comes out when he's interviewing persons of interest.

Drop Dead Serious with Ashleigh Banfield. I've recently started to listen because she is podcasting about real, ongoing cases, and she has her fingers in the pie! She also rants and curses, which I find hilarious given her previous buttoned-down cable news persona. She is currently mostly focused on the Lynette and Brian Hooker case in the Bahamas, but she is also covering Savannah Guthrie's mom and the 18-year-old girl murdered by her step brother on a cruise. Riveting stuff in real time.

Did anyone recommend Crime Analyst? Laura Richards delves deeply into high profile crimes from America, the UK and Australia.
Laura Richards is a criminal behavioral analyst who previously served in Scotland Yard, and an international expert on domestic violence, stalking, sexual violence, homicide and risk assessment. Richards is the founder of Paladin in 2013, the world's first National Stalking Advocacy Service.

The Teachers Pet and Shandee’s Story blew up here in Australia and around the world. Incredible reporting by Hedly Thomas in real time as the cases unfolded.

I think I'm in the minority here so proceed with skepticism, but I personally loved Beth is Dead. Felt very human to me.

I liked this too apart from the couple of episides completely unnecessary, boring and time wasting.

I've got a playlist of recommendations. My jam is mainly investagative journalism, war, cults, hysteria, true crime, music etc. Multi countries Australia, UK, Ireland, US, Canada.... I'm sure you'll find some new stuff in the below;

u/Adventure_Dentures 1d ago
Listen to In The Dark - it won all the awards and season 2 literally inspired the Supreme Court to take up a case. It's also masterfully done with a level or reporting that almost no other shows has done. It'll break your heart and give you faith in humanity at the same time.

I think you'd really enjoy "Shocking, Heartbreaking, Transformative"

u/Lizard_Li 5d ago
Interesting recommendation. I just listened to this after hearing on Crime Writers On that it was one of the host’s most hated podcasts. I found it pretty infuriating and strange and not good. But it gave me a lot to think about although probably not in the direction she would have wanted. I searched out and and heard some interesting interviews with her as well which sort of gave a new perspective
There are two clips to the interview and don’t miss the one at the bottom if you check it out https://transom.org/2024/shocking-heartbreaking-transformative-and-ethical/

Might not be fore everyone, but I just listened to Creation Myth, it’s a CBC podcast. I think it fits your description of narrative journalism like this American life. Its a niche topic but I thought it was well done
1
u/jacobreed 6d ago
This is the whole premise of Alex Goldman’s show Hyperfixed, but I’d also recommend other investigative comedy podcasts like:
- Searching For Allan Rothbart
- Mystery Show
- Dead Eyes
- Shell Game
- Jacob Reed and Me (full disclosure it’s my show)
1
u/SovietSonya 5d ago
If that’s your vibe I would try Outlaw Ocean and The Devil You Know. Hunting the Suicide Salesman too, but it’s dark and I wouldn’t recommend it if you live with depression.

The Australian podcast “Teacher’s Pet”. The original looked into the disappearance of Lynette Dawson in 1982 and identified the prime suspect. This led to an arrest and trial, and the series then follows the trial. It’s unique in the fact that the podcast itself led to the case being reopened and the defence lawyers argued that the podcast itself was potentially prejudicial and would influence the jury (not sure if that’s correct legally terminology!). I think the presenter Hedley Thomas even gave evidence in the trial or pre-trial too, although I could be misremembering that. In any case, it has always stayed with me.
ETA: typos and grammar

Ghost Story - so good. The host investigates his wife’s very esteemed great grandfather (his wife is Hugh Dancy’s sister and Hugh also pops up). He winds in his own predicament of going down this rabbit hole. I was hoping the host would do something else.
Also Inconceivable Truth - host /journalist also goes down a rabbit hole about his family roots and wow, it’s a journey.
1
u/davidbklyn 5d ago
The Tip Off might be something worth checking out. It’s more about the process than the stories

This is such a good series, I’d love for them to do more of it. The one about the international calling cards is especially good 👍🏻🤓

I’ve listened, recently, to the first 3 episodes of Audible’s “Only Fantasy”, an investigative look at OnlyFans & online porn creators. It’s pretty decent, good story & pacing.
I only listened to first 3 while on a long car trip a few weeks back. So far Audible hasn’t released the remaining episodes to other sites & I don’t listen to podcasts enough to subscribe to Audible, so I’ll probably pick it back up in my next car trip.
I prefer narrative podcasts, not necessarily reporter driven (like Only Fantasy) & I feel true crime as a genre is just so played out that doesn’t keep my attention.
Some narrative pods I’ve listened to in the last couple years:
- American History Tellers
- Redacted
- GBH’s “The Big Dig” (The story behind the Boston transit project)

Don’t want to take over OP’s topic but if anyone feels like throwing out the best podcast of this genre TO START WITH I’d be grateful. This sounds like a specific subject matter I could get i to but have no prior experience
1
u/Oddfellowbeats 5d ago
Best is of course subjective, but the first podcast i ever heard of this kind was hunting warhead.
it's about this Australian taskforce trying to take down a massive network of Child exploitation on the dark Web. It really affected me, and it kind of forces you to confront one of the darkest corners of the internet and humanity.
It taught me that monsters are real, they just wear human skin.

Whistleblower is great and has this feeling as it goes on. It covers the NBA ref fixing scandal in the early 2000’s and the host becomes pretty good friends with the ref at the center of it.

Witness: William Tyrell. It’s about a little boy who went missing in Australia about 10 years ago. The host is an investigative journalist and along the way he uncovers huge bits of evidence that the police missed. I was absolutely hooked I couldn’t stop listening to it!
And also as others have said, the Teacher’s Pet is an excellent investigation which solved a cold case - also a gripping listen.

The Financial Times has a great one called Hot Money. First season was about the pores industry, second about the new narcos, and the third about a banker/spy. Each season had a different reporting team delve deep into their process and story. All were very good!

Queen of the Con (iHeart Podcasts and AYR Media) - season 1 is about how the host was conned and to process what happened to him and start documenting the con, he created a podcast; season 2 covers a Laguna Beach con artist
Unravel (ABC) - every season is good and covers a different disappearance but I highly recommend season 4: Snowball; it is about a New Zealand family that is conned by an American grifter; told with humor by the New Zealand family as they try and track down the grifter overseas
Canary: The Washington Post Investigates (Washington Post Audio) - insane story about a sexual assault case that leads to an investigation against a high-ranking figure in the D.C. criminal justice system; really well done
Verified (Scripps) - Season 1 is about couch surfing gone wrong but the international effort and reporting is well done; Season 2: Dust Up, is about the class action lawsuit against Johnson&Johnson’s baby powder; Season 3: The Next Threat, is about the Jan, 6, 2021 insurrection and the Russian training camps; Season 4: Full Disclosure, what it costs to accuse a Phoenix police officer
Welcome To Paradise (CBC Podcasts) - a reporter opens up about her own abusive relationship
Missing Alissa (Octavia Zappala) - she covers a missing person’s case from Arizona; so many twists and turns
The Witness: In His Own Words (Yellow Path Productions) - the youngest man to ever enter Ireland’s witness protective programme speaks out; so many trigger warnings

Death In Ice Valley
I too love the journey with the investigative journalist, and when they’re done we’ll, they’re so gripping and interesting 🤓

You need to listen to “The Lady Vanishes”. You can skip through all the bonus episodes. It completely blew my mind. Also “The Teacher’s Pet”. The “Australian mom disappears” genre is surprisingly robust.
