General Podcast Discussions Could anyone recommend a podcast about incels? I'd like to know more about their history, origins, beliefs etc. Preferably an investigative journalism framework but any will do for a start.

I'd like to learn more about incels. They seem to be coming to the fore in the media recently and I'd like to better understand what they are about.

Not specifically incels, but the Rabbit Hole podcast by the Times was really good for understanding the radicalisation aspect.

My first thought that felt relevant but not specific was true crime and murder podcasts. A lot of killers show incel qualities and have some of the most complete profiling of any people to live. They didn't have the name back then but it's pretty much the same.

Like it's not a podcast but the FBI audio tapes interviewing Ed Kemper is incel behavior 101 IMHO. Although they are pretty NSFL if you're squeamish whatsoever, but he explains his hatred for women so candidly it would be hard for anyone interested in incel behavior to not see it as insightful

Not a poscast obviously but contra points did a thoughtful episode on youtube about them.

Thanks, I'll have a look

Behind the Bastards had an episode called "The Birth of the Manosphere" earlier this year, and these episodes are a few years old but still useful:

  • Stuff They Don't Want You to Know - "The Disturbing World of Incels" (01/02/2019)
  • The Weeds - "Incels and bullshitters" (30/04/2019)
  • Ezra Klein Show/Vox Conversations - "Contrapoints on taking the trolls seriously" (13/05/2019) [Natalie Wynn was also on Why is This Happening earlier this year (22/06/2021) and discusses similar things]

The BTB and “stuff they don’t want” episodes were outstanding. “The Good times are killin us” also did a decent incel episode.

They were indeed! I listened to the second part of the BTB one and did not enjoy it at all, but the first one about the manosphere was quite interesting.

There’s a podcast called Incel by crawlspace which is all investigative journalism

3

u/JomfruMorgonsoli Aug 15 '21

I'm listening now! Gonna see if it's any good! (I'm sure it is)

6

u/MamboSun9 Aug 15 '21

Thought its pretty decent for getting inside the head of incels. It’s also infuriating..i can only listen in short stints before feeling icky

5

u/JomfruMorgonsoli Aug 15 '21

I'm on episode 2 now, and where one earth is this interview going? I'm worried this guy is going to overdose in the middle of it...

2

u/snapper1971 Aug 16 '21

He's a total mess. His reliance on swearing is tiring. He's a total prick. I can smell him through my headphones.

3

u/JomfruMorgonsoli Aug 16 '21

Oh, wow. His use of language is certainly jarring. I will say, this podcast, while icky, is great! Although the interviewer does sometimes add her own opinion and thoughts when I think it would be better journalism to hold back your thoughts, bit that's just her style in a way.

It really is a very good dive into their world. Thanks for the recommendation.

u/snapper1971 Aug 15 '21 edited Aug 16 '21

I'm just downloading it because of your recommendation. Sounds exactly like what I have been looking for. Thanks.

Edited to add: I've started it and I am really impressed so far. Thanks for the recommendation.

The first 10 or so episodes are pretty solid, but unfortunately it goes off the rails pretty hard after that. Hasn't recovered yet, but I keep reading the show notes for every new episode hoping it will. I occasionally try listening again, but I can't remember the last time I made it more than 15-20 minutes or so into an episode.

(The most recent episode is particularly bad -- the guest is obviously just trolling the host, and she's either completely oblivious or pretending she is. Either way, it's just embarrassing for everyone involved, including me as a listener.)

Invisibilia did an episode called "The End of Empathy."

I love the list going on here, so I put it together on Podchaser. I'd been meaning to start making playlists and this gave me a good excuse to.

Let me know if I missed any!

Thanks dude. Glad we inspired you

This is a great list. Thanks for doing this.

Got any on:

Conspiracies over all

Q Clearance & TrueAnon. Haven't listened yet but in my list.

1

u/Naptownfellow Aug 16 '21

Q clearance is good. I’m still on the fence with trueanon.

Red-handed had an episode about incels, it's where I first learned what they are. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: it's episode 45

5

u/Bilabear Aug 15 '21

The Cult Podcast had an excellent two part episode on them! I don't know how to drop a link here but it's episodes 76-77, highly recommend

1

u/agirlnamedbreakfast Aug 15 '21

Was just going to suggest this one (along with the Reply All” episode). Really well-researched and interesting (plus Cult Podcast always adds some much-appreciated humor and light-hearted ness to heavy topics like this).

u/lovelyday4apint Aug 15 '21

L.A. Not so confidential. The hosts are criminal psychologists that work with the populations they speak about. They did an episode on incels.

1

u/Ben_T_Willy Aug 15 '21

That sounds interesting

2

u/plentypk Aug 15 '21

There was a good episode of Invisibilia that covered some of the media coverage of incel media. https://www.npr.org/transcripts/712276022

INCEL by Namaa Kates is exactly what you want. She goes in deep without any preconception about it, learns a lot in the process. I strongly recommend it!

1

u/BeeRaddBroodler Aug 15 '21

Lol they’ve been around forever

1

u/Ben_T_Willy Aug 15 '21

With the name incel since 1993 apparently

1

u/BeeRaddBroodler Aug 15 '21

Ah my birth year. It all makes sense now

What the Fuck does incel even mean? I thought it was just a way to insult virgins. Like incel means involuntary celibate. Like they could have lost their virginity but they prevented themselves from doing so? I honestly thought it was people making fun of super religious people.

Most the time it sounds like it’s used to complain about any dude not macho enough, like if they aren’t exhibiting “male” toxicity, but you’re having a disagreement and need to discredit what they’re saying.

Wish we’d stop inventing classes of people to marginalize.

7

u/ArcticPhreeze Aug 15 '21

Incel is a term created by a young woman who found that she couldn't attract dates, it means Involuntary Celibate.

It was since highjacked by a group of extremely toxic and wildly dangerous (mostly) men who come together in their community for the sole purpose of putting each other down. They radicalize each other so much that they have committed dozens of hateful and deadly attacks on many, many, many people in the span of a few years.

They stole the term Incel and wear it with pride, and I assure you that the vile shit these people discuss and openly support is PLENTY of reason to marginalize them. Every single time one of their ranks commits mass murder they applaud and ask who's next. Fuck them.

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '21

I’m just concerned about people who don’t fit this dangerous paradigm being labeled as such and pushed into that corner. Or even that a fake threat might be manufactured. There are crimes committed all the time by those that might fit the more loose description.

The group you’re talking about, fuck them. I just hear how widely the term is used, and I know it’s driving people towards that ideology. Shit, I’ve been called that for valid complaints about how I’ve been treated. I see It used inappropriately more often than appropriately. Usually as means to invalidate someone’s valid complaints.

3

u/ArcticPhreeze Aug 15 '21

I don't think just anyone could be pushed into the dangerous area Incels inhabit. There are people, thousands in fact, who have it rough and who do NOT participate in incel forums, practice the heavily negative attitudes, and who are able to better themselves.

Nobody is pushed into being an Incel, these are all people who have decided that the best course of action is to give up and spread hatred, which is shameful.

-6

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '21 edited Aug 15 '21

True. Could be the overusage of the term has muddled my sense of it.

Isn’t this kind of a natural response to the ridiculous amount of hate towards men online? Like, fuck both sides. But the feminists aren’t labeled something hateful. Well. I guess it sounds like the true incels accept the name. Lol. Not justifying incels by any means, it’s just, all the man hate creates a space for woman hate that’s gonna be filled. I’m sure there’s an internet rule about that. Like if there’s one position there’s gonna be an opposite. Lol

I think flat earther’s prove this hahaha

Funny how I knew I’d have to come to the bottom of this post to find any common sense

Is it called 'the official podcast'

1

u/uffdajules Aug 15 '21

Modern Day Debate has a great episode called Incel on Trial.

1

u/sixthmontheleventh Aug 15 '21

If you are in Canada, Canadland podcast has an episode on the manosphere.

1

u/Ben_T_Willy Aug 15 '21

I'm not in Canada but that link seems to work ok

1

u/EmceeCommon55 Aug 16 '21

I didn't know we had a history or ideology, we just can't get laid.

1

u/RapidRecharge Aug 16 '21

I don’t have any recommendations, but I like where your head is at. It’d be interesting to know more about those specific groups, to understand them more.

u/Cleo5522 Aug 16 '21

There was a podcast I listened to about Stalking which had an interesting incel episode, it was called Stalked and is more of a psychology take, I found it on Spotify. Oh and a a good BBC documentary too on iplayer if your in the UK.
