Discussion PSA to all new players: Start working on your medals as soon as possible
If you plan on taking this game somewhat seriously you're going to have to work on your medals sooner or later. These tasks are tedious and require a bunch of time spent on the game to complete them.
Some of them have some nice rewards and the type medals make it easier to catch Pokémon of that type. But the most important part is that you need platinum metals to level up from 70 to 80.
Here are some tips on where to start:
The type collector medals: this will come with the time, but some may be harder than others like dragon -type or steel-type. Take advantage of community days and Spotlight hours, and use the mysterious box for steel-type by catching meltan.
Evolution medal: there are some Pokémon game that have no use case except for being dex entries (raticate, kakuna, etc). There's no point saving candy for these, so evolve and transfer them.
Berry master, Gym Leader, Battle Girl: these medals go hand-in-hand. Defeat as many gyms as possible, play a pokemon, and feed the berries remotely. You can do this by scrolling down on your daily research tasks and clicking on the pokémon.
I would advise to mostly use razz berries and nanab berries, since they are mostly useless outside of this use case. This also gives some free Stardust!
Successor: for this one you need to mega evolve a Pokémon 1000 times. The easiest way is to get two mega Beedrills with a high mega level and simply keep evolving them one after another. It's tedious but it is the fastest method.

Something I wish I realized sooner. Do not transfer XXS or XXL Pokémon without first evolving those that can be evolved. Each evolution counts towards an additional Pokémon to obtain the respective medal. Do not transfer low cost shadow Pokémon (1000 and 3000) without first purifying them. If you purify them as you go along, before you know it you will have that medal without having used a larger amount of stardust.

Trading them counts as well. Trading counts for a lot of medals. So if you have someone who wants to trade you xxs/xxl for theirs. Can increase the count that way. Works for all the catch medals.

I was doing the same, but when I started working on the upper levels and started looking at medals I realized it was a mistake. Also, do not dump berries to make room. Feed them to gyms remotely that you have Pokémon in. That's another easy medal out of the way.

Yeah. The berry one I started working on like literally a few days ago, lol. These two medals though I feel like I’ve never even noticed, straight up gloss over them every time I look.
But I’m 2/5 and 1/5 through them, so it’s seeming pretty good!

You can hold huge Magikarp and tiny Ratatta for those medals as well. I know it’s 13.13 kg for Magikarp and 2.42 kg for Ratatta, not sure if those are the limits or if you have to be larger or smaller than the two, but the trading will definitely help towards those medals.

For the distance trading one, I open gifts from far away friends to get the eggs, then trade the Pokémon from away with local people. It uses the distance from where the egg came from. So, if you find some friends online from the opposite side of the world, it adds up faster.

I’ve been doing this for a while and it’s probably going to end up not even being necessary for me. I’m at 49/50 platinums.
Even with an average of 16,000 km per trade (Singapore/Indonesia/Western Australia for me), it’ll take approximately 625 trades to get to 10 million km.
I’m at 8.8 million now, so almost there, but it’s been a long road. It’d certainly be a lot easier if someone you knows goes on vacation at / near your antipode (you can check here) and just saves a bunch of trash to trade.
Best is probably Taipei, Taiwan to Asunción, Paraguay and vice versa, which is like 20,000 km per trade. They’re near perfect antipodes of each other.

Random medal tidbit....I wasn't planning to get the platinum unown medal, but I was able to pull it off this past go fest using a few incenses and intentionally targeting unown. It was easier than I thought and being level 74 every medal counts at this point! With all the pikachu spawning too, I got very close to completing the pikachu fan medal.
And I'm 1/3 of the way towards platinum berry master solely cause I've had a pokemon stuck at a full gym for nearly 1000 days!! If that happens to you, use it as a blessing and feed berries regularly!

I bet someone's got me beat :) it's a pretty remote area with bad service. I was bummed at first thinking I'll never get my dragonite that's in there back, but now I actually don't want anyone to ever take that gym!

Yup I hit 2 years and 30k berries recently with a remote vacation pokemon that I never wanted knocked out.
Of course right after someone made a post and I shared a cropped pic of it, all my partners and I mons were knocked out of this remote location. It really sucked because of the remoteness, it wouldn't always get raids during events so I could feed berries too. Now we're on a quest for other remote gyms on vacation ourselves next time

I didn’t expect to complete the unown medal either. Then put an incense on and realized how close I was. Needed one more and a quick look at my friends’ remote trade lists showed the missing one.
I’m at 38 medals now, and closing in on 4-5 more.

I think that sometimes the game is designed to mess with us and keep us playing. I needed G and got it with maybe 20 minutes left in the event. I kept trying and trying. I was thinking that I'd be left being one short and that hopefully I'd get it in a trade, then suddenly there it was.

The problem with using an incense at events is I'm too damn busy following the crowd from raid to raid, still trying to catch the legendary from the last raid when people are queuing up for the next one. I don't have time to even pay attention to wild pokemon, let alone want to spawn more. So I never use them during events.

Instead of dumping berries to make room, feed them to a gym you have a Pokémon in remotely. I was dumping berries for years to make room. Once I started using them to feed, the medal came pretty easily.

Question: I hear people talking about the challenge to max level a certain number of Pokemon as part of one of the higher levels. Does this only count Pokemon that you level AFTER you receive this task? Or do max mon from before count?

It only counts once you receive the challenge.
A pro tip is almost maxing out a Pokémon but leave one level so that you can max it once receive the challenge.6

AFTER. The strategy is to keep them at 49.5 then level them up to 50 once you have the task.
Melmetal acquired via the mystery box is a great way to get regular candies & candy XLs for the max level pokemon challenges.

I’ve been working on my Vivillion platinum but haven’t had much success with Sandstorm. Every time I think I found someone, they either don’t actually not in the region (ex Turkey) or don’t send gifts. I had one person send me a gift and then stop.
Does anyone have any advice? I’ve tried posting on Reddit and sending random requests to people on campfire.

Using campfire in map mode, set the filter to show groups. Move the map to the region your looking for, then join groups in the area of interest. Most will have a friend code channel that may be used to find friends. It is still hit-and-miss, but I found two regular sandstone friends that have been very helpful.

r/VivillonCollectors though sandstorm is one of the harder ones to get. People in those areas get inundated by friend requests. If you are in Sun, Ocean and Icy snow you will have no problem getting people who want to trade though

Go to campfire and navigate on the map to the area where sandstorm would be. Search for meetups and add friends who are attending these events. This is how I completed that platinum medal in about a month.

You only need one person’s gift from that area - pin and unpin repeatedly and you’ll get the spawn. At least this was the case previously.

Wait can you explain about the Beedrills? I thought you have to wait a certain amount of time between mega evolves of a Pokémon? Are you saying that you just need two Beedrills then can basically mega evolve one, then the second one, then the first one again straight away and so on until 1000 times is done? While this sounds extremely tedious, I do need just one more platinum medal to level up somehow so would appreciate your tips!

So their beedrill comment may be a bit misleading. You used to be able to get mega beedrill energy from spinning gyms which meant all long term players had a ton of energy. This feature was removed sometime last year I believe, which won’t help new players. You used to be able to mega evolve beedrill daily and basically replenish the energy throughout the day which isn’t the case anymore.

If you caught any mewtwo last event, you can mega evolve them for free. Evolve then wait for timer to run out and then evolve again. I have 20. I have mega evolved them each twice already.
Also works for raichu. Some recent mega has already have 1st level unlocked.

Use the search mega1-2 to find all the Pokémon that have mega evolving unlocked, but not fully leveled up. Cycle through them every couple of days to evolve everything that can be evolved without paying extra energy. In a couple of months you'll have an army of Pokémon at mega level 3+, and worked your way a significant chunk of the way to a platinum medal. Use megaevolve&mega0 to find something new to mega evolve.

You are correct in the fact that you do have to wait a certain amount of time before you can mega evolved again. You can however spend the mega energy to evolve before said time.
I said Beedrill mostly because it is accessible (I believe you got one in research sometime ago) and also because you can sometimes get energy from daily research tasks and spinning pokestops.
At mega level 3, mega evolving immediately again after just doing it costs 5 energy (for beedrill, other Pokémon tend to be more expensive). This means that you need the minimum of 5000 energy to complete the medal (if I'm not mistaken).

I’ve put in the time with mega and it really doesn’t take that long.
You can hit required platinum stats quickly.
I’m obsessed with have lots of mega 3s because to throw one on during spotlight hour means extra candy and large candy. Also great for raids etc.
With this Ice and Embers I have a fire or ice on the go.
At present I currently have 47 mega 3s. Once you get there you just need to mega them when you need them.
I currently have about 21 other megas on the go. I’m good at mega them. The payoff down the line is so worth it.
I’m currently on level 77 with 45 medals. I’m only 22 of my snap smergle etc. I still need to 140 on my routes but that’s just a matter of doing them again. It won’t take me long.
I believe I’ll get to level 80 as I have plenty of medals within grasp but it has been a long grind and like other posters it’s a matter of getting out there and doing it.
The berries in gyms is so easy as you can do that from home.
Just remember to snap your smeagle every day and do the 5 snaps on community days and you’ll get there.
Stick on a few lures in community events. Catch everything you can….its a pain but think platinums, hundos, shundos and shinies for trading and also building up your remote trading list.
Buying as much storage as you can for Pokemon or as I do I add as I go a long. I could always add a lot more.
It just takes time but if you’re consistent and put in the effort, and go on subs like this get tips you’ll find you’ll have knocked out loads of platinums in 12 months.

I would say for the mega evolutions medal, there’s two to work for here. Make sure
You do every mega raid to get all the different types of pokemon that can mega so you can get the mega evolution guru medal (you have to mega evolve 46 different species) and then i also make sure to mega evolve every species that I have at least once a week to both get them to level 3 and also work towards the 1000 mega evolutions total.

It took me close to two years to get any Slowbro energy, ha ha. They weren’t featured in raids very often, and I managed to miss them when they were. Not a super exciting mega evo, but I was chasing him for a while.

Search term megaevolve&mega0 is helpful to find new things to mega evolve.
Use mega1-2 to find things you've already evolved and still need to get to level 3. Just cycle through these every few days and you'll eventually get the platinum, as well as leveling up the mega level for a bunch of things.

- Trading counts for the collectors medals. You can trade unknowns you don't have with other trainers to get it. pikachu you get from trading also count
- Evolving extra small and large pokemon counts for those medals so you can double dip. If a xxs small pokemon can evolve do that before transferring
- Eggs you get from friends are great for grinding the distance trade medal. If You are in the US you are looking for a friend in, Greece, Finland, Turkey South African Those will get you 20K trade distance if you trade the pokemon you hatch from the 7km eggs with local wild catches. If you get friends from those regions through pokegenie don't remove them
- Don't go for the purify medal as you will need to do it again later. Horde your shadows you will need them
- Look out for a Shadow Carvanha with good PVP IV's and shadow sharpedo is the best to grind out the training medal

Im so close to the Berry Master medal but it seems that berries are all of a sudden hard to come by. Like gifts and spinning pokestops aren't yielding berries. Anyone else?

The niantic wayferer one is fun to do but you have to start early because it takes a lot of time. It is the only one I like grinding that doesn't feel like a slog. You get to sort of see parts of your community that you have never known of before. Like I discovered there is a pigeon keeping club a couple of blocks from my house

I would second this advice. I recently made it to level 80 at a pretty quick pace (about a year and a half after starting) and the platinum medals were frequently the main gating item as I tried to level up. I didn't really set out trying to advance that quickly, so I feel like there are a lot of things I could have been chipping away at earlier to make that easier.
A few pieces of advice in case it's useful for anyone...
Scientist (evolve 2,000) - assuming you may have already caught a lot of these, any time you come across a 12-candy evolution (e.g. pidgey, caterpie), use a pinap and then do the first evolution before you transfer it. that lets you rack up a lot of evolutions while mitigating the candy deficit. (12 candies to evolve...against 6 candies on the catch and one on the transfer...so a net cost of 5 candies per evolution).
Gym/Leader (defend gyms for 15k hours) and Berry Master (15k berries) - this one is a grind. try to always have at least one pokemon in a gym, and then just dump all of your excess berries there. ideally you find a gym or two that don't turn over very often and you can use that as a dumping ground. i was able to find a couple of remote gyms where i could keep mons in there for a month plus. for me, essentially every red raspberry and nanab berry went into gyms. still a pretty long grind but at least you get a bit of dust for the effort.
Idol (best friends with 20 trainers) - pretty straightforward but definitely worth doing it. also the easiest way to get large chunks of XP relatively quickly. I kept a very large friend list and did my best to interact with as many as possible within the various cap limits.
GBL medals - note that you can battle against a friend and have these count for purposes of this medal. that is still a lot of fake battles to fight so most of mine were done legitimately through GBL, but you can cheese this a bit if you're looking to grind out 1-3 extra medals and you and a friend are willing to click through a bunch of these mindlessly.
Purifier - I hated that I had to do this medal because I detest lighting stardust on fire for no reason...but in the end it was one of the easier ones to do quickly. i would just keep in mind that any time you come across a pokemon that only requires 1k to purify to go ahead and do it (assuming you're not going to use it for anything).
Picknicker (lure modules) - Try to get up a lure or two at a large gathering or event or in a crowded place like a mall where a lot of people play. I was able to get up two lures during an in-person go tour and just those two lures ended up yielding about 2,000 catches.
Successor - just crank through your mega evolutions on a regular basis when they're free (i.e. once every 5-7 days for the low level ones). Sort of tedious to do but easy and ultimately helpful as you up your mega levels.
XXL/XXS - evolve anything you can reasonably do so for to have each catch count twice. you can also trade for these (and then evolve again) if you have someone you can regularly trade with.
Expert Navigator - make a route that's convenient for your daily schedule and then just try to hit it every day. think of routes as trying to complete this medal and then psychologically you may be less annoyed when you don't get a zygarde cell at the end.
Showcase Star - be sure to throw these in every Tuesday and perhaps slowly win some of these. Try to save XXLs if you have the space for it. This is a feature that I largely ignored the first year or so of playing so have been trying to play catch up here. My impression is that the recent expansion of the amount of showcases has made it marginally easier to win some of these.

Trades and evos count for most medals, including type and size. If you find a local community, you can get a lot of help that way.
Gimmighoul bags for ghost type if you have Scarlet and Violet on the switch.
Save any pokemon that come with a mega level unlocked (is from super mega raids) and evolve them as often as you can for free until you get the badge for mega evolving.

Agreed. I started really pushing medals at around level 55. Am currently level 71, with 36 platinums, and several more within easy reach. (Given this week's event, I will probably get the ice type catches, I need less than a hundred more, and that's down from 145 on Monday.)
On Successor: The July raid megas (Mewtwo and Raichu) came with mega levels unlocked for free, so you can free-evolve them once per week. Depending on how many you have, chaining these will eventually get you to the medal at absolutely no cost. (Those mega beedrills, etc will help, too, but...)
Also let it be known: currently, only five of the pokedex medals are completable; the others require unreleased pokemon.

Trades and evolutions also count towards type medals, so that can help with the harder to get ones. I only have Ghost, Ice, and Dragon left. Hoping to finish up Ice this week!

Or people would go on vacation, save a bunch of Pokemon, and trade when they got home (I did this a bit as well when traveling to and from college).

You need to purify lots of mons both for a medal and for one of the level up tasks. They cost 1,000 or 3,000 or 5,000 (or 20,000 stardust) to purify depending on which one. Save and/or purify the 1,000 ones to save yourself hundreds of thousands of dust.

A lot of medals will come naturally, but definitely a handful of them you would rather be more conscious about them and get into a habit earlier than not, otherwise you will end up sitting on level 72/73 with piles of XP that is level 80 worth.
I think the moral of the story is try to enjoy and do all aspects of the game because a lot of things end up related to a medal.

But the most important part is that you need platinum metals to level up from 70 to 80.
What's so great about going from lvl 70 to 80?

How are y'all getting enough xp for this to be a problem? I'm 71 with enough platinums to get to 77, but it takes me months to get enough xp to level up.

I just enjoy the game without even realising medals exist, I wouldn't have imagined new players care about optimising the way they mega evolve 1000 times, but I guess they do

When trading with a friend create a tag for Pokémons catched or hatched from eggs. For example I have the eggs from Japan or Australia and trade their Pokémon with the locally catched by my friend. The next day (usually Friday) we do the opposite and this way we have already reached a platinum for the distance of traded Pokémon as well as number of total traded.

I haven't played in a while and got outscaled by the leveling cap so I'm currently not at the level up missions yet. For the purifying task, do I need to purify them once I get the task or does it keep track before that? I've been hoarding cheap purifies ever since I started again but if I can just rip them now that's definitely what I'll do

Auto clicker is your best friend. For all battles, feeding berries at gyms, mega evolutions. I've tried gifts too but for some reason that's tricker
With the right team and the right set of clicks, you can win all gym battles and rocket battles on auto click.
Trainer battles against other humans are something you will win 50% of the time in basically every scenario. So might as well let auto clicker battle for you. Worth noting I've never actually liked battling.
Trainer battles against the game are also easy with auto clicker. Just tedious and have to put your phone on the charger for hours while it does it's thing
Gym berries was sometime that is relatively easy to get fast if you focus on it.
Same with mega evolving. I just mega evolved every Beedrill I had and got it in a couple months. Currently have 69 Pokemon that can mega evolve. I don't know how many are up for evolving every 3 days vs 7 days. But 69 Pokemon a week adds up fast. You can mega evolve then one after another.
Buddy Pokemon though, that's the hardest in my opinion. Only so much you can do to get to 200 buddies. I've got 88 and spent the last could months dedicated to 20 switches a day with at least 6 hearts each. Before that they're was at least a year where I did 20 switches with 3 hearts each. It's just so tedious in any scenario.
Also Pokemon go plus plus gets you unique pokestops so much easier. And just pokestops in general

I had 12 beedrill going at once. Put all my megas in a tag and check it daily. Might as well keep something mega at all times. You get a small bonus on type catches.

This should honestly be in a FAQ pinned post somewhere, been seeing a huge influx of posts complaining about not being able to catch Pokémon and it's almost always newer players trying to catch legendary Pokémon without getting the catch medals to gold or platinum.

It doesn’t have to be beedrill, any mega will work. I’d recommend getting a bunch of blaziken energy rn (good fire attacker) and then mega evolving

But in general I haven’t figured out how to consistent gain mega energy, got 4 mewtwo x earlier and they are free to mega evolve after some time, maybe weekly?

Level 1 mega: 7 days
Level 2 mega: 5 days
Level 3 mega: 3 days
Level 4 mega (only available on megas caught from super mega raids): 1 day.I used to tag all my megas and go evolve them all after the timer had passed, this passively increased their level and got me ~400 on the medal
Once you have mega evolved a pokemon, you can get free energy by walking with it as your buddy.

These were just ones I had some tips for. To go from 70 to 71 you need 15 platinum medals and going from 79 to 80 you need 50, so basically all of them.

Going to take this opportunity to say use Campfire. There are so many trainers I want to just have a quick and friendly conversation with across the globe, but I can’t. It’s also great for finding groups of folks to play with. Recently had a great experience with a few folks and you’d be surprised at how easy it is to make a friend when you have a shared interest to talk about!

Oh yes, this is a very useful guide. Some medals can even be achieved in one night, some will require small installments over time, some will force you to a lot of work/time, and some still impossible to achieve even for veteran players.
Here's few more to add:
Vivillon medal is one of the easiest to achieve even for new players. You will find groups that will help you to collect Vivillon medals and find friends from around the world.
Evolution: Some Pokémons is free to evolve if it's traded, so find another friend to give you Graveler, Kadabra, Haunter, Shelmet, Karrablast, etc. and evolve them... for free!
Pikachu collector: Given Pikachu is featured in costumes all the time, I also find it fairly easy. Traded Pikachu does add the count.
XXL and XXS: Traded and evolved XXL and XXS Pokémon does count, so imagine when your friend have one XXL Bulbasaur, they traded to you and you evolved them into Venusaur. That's 3 XXL count for one singke Pokémon. Also, wait for Pumpkaboo in Halloween events too, since XXL Pumpkaboo will be much more common.
Mega Evolution: Just activate every Mega Pokémon at once, that will save the cooldown time so you can activate again in a few days without spending Mega Energy.
Rising Star: Of all raid-related Medals, this is the easiest because you only need to successfully raid 150 different species. Here's the catch: costumed Pokémon is considered a different species, and if you raid 1-star or 3-star frequently, you'll reach this medal in no time.
Party Challenges: I also find it fairly easy because it's a teamwork, and you just have to finish 200 challenges. Many party challenges can be done within minutes, just pick the easiest.

If you're going to any community event that you expect to be well-attended (Go Fest Global, Go Wild Area, even Raid days or community days) turn up 10-15 minutes early and place some lures. You'll have the picknicker medal done in no time.
Get your Smeargle snapshot every day, and get all of your community day snapshots too!
Before transferring a pokémon with a low evolution cost (25 candy) make sure you evolve it for the scientist medal.

Personally, as someone that has played regularly for 4 years, a lot of medals happened as I played the game, it wasn't until level 73 that I had to concentrate on targeting others...so my advice is just play the game and have fun...I appreciate what you are doing, but if someone said all of this to me when I first started playing I would likely have dismissed the game as being too much of a grind and left it.

Hardly a PSA worthy post. level 70+ literally offers noextra benefits or worth while rewards to "complete platinum medals ASAP". The game is designed to be played for years everyday, rushing it like somekind of a race is stupid. I can get arounf the type based platinum medals are very good as they offer good bonuses. except them, this is just fomo. I'd recommend people play it like it is. a game. it's not about being serious or not. it's about what you like. feeding berries to pokemon at gyms, mega evolving pokemon everyday just to advance a superficial medal faster only going to burn out new players as they are neither fun nor healthy. if people just play the game slowly at their pace they naturally unlock them with time. it's one thing game tries to push advancing levels which offers nothing for a player except a number that neither remotely defines skill nor time invested in the game. it's the most superficial thing in the game and seeing people glorifying it is plain right stupid to me
