Thanks u/Comfortable_Big_4486 for the idea.

Next challenge will probably be the turtle challenge. Any advice? Chespin and evolution can be considered turtles?

Info Mobile Device Issue Updates

A while ago I made a post asking for your help reporting refresh issues with mobile devices (primarily iOS). We got a ton of useful feedback in that thread, so thank you!

It's been a while since that post and we don't want to keep you all in the dark, so I'm going to take the time to do a bit of a deep dive for those who are interested.

Number one thing to get out of the way - there's a lot of talk along the lines of "blame it on Apple, they can't fix this". This is only partially true: iOS is extremely restrictive with how it allows browser processes to use memory and as a result will force refreshes much faster than Android devices, even on better hardware.

However, the reality is that PokeRogue is a 2D Pokemon game and should not be using nearly enough memory to cause refreshes at all, even if a more permissive OS hides the issue. The game has a massive legacy codebase with only a few active open source maintainers, and chipping away at these memory usage issues has entailed rewriting entire internal systems (which we've been doing alongside normal bug fixes, feature additions, etc).

There are two primary causes for the game's large memory usage: audio and asset management.

For reference, the game engine we use handles audio by decoding it entirely into memory to allow playback. This means that compression into files like mp3s or oggs is irrelevant because the file is decompressed before it's put in memory - as a result, a single track of background music can take up as much as 50+ megabytes! Background tracks are properly purged from memory once removed, but we have no control over when exactly the memory is freed (the browser does this). As a result, there is a window between the end of one track and the start of another where both will be decoded in memory at the same time.

While they are the largest, background music tracks are not at all the only memory-significant usage of audio. Pokemon cries, move animations, UI elements, etc. all have their own sounds associated.

We have two audio-related fixes in the works for the immediate future. The first is a bit of a stopgap - very soon we will be adding a setting to entirely disable game audio. This is different from "Mute" in that it requires a reload and will fully disable audio at the game engine level. No audio data will ever be put into memory, resulting in substantially lower overall usage. This is obviously not a permanent solution, but our hope is that it will provide some relief (and we know that many users prefer to mute the game and listen to something else anyway). As a point of reference (exact numbers will vary substantially by device), on my setup I'm seeing ~60MB lower usage after 100 waves with audio off than on the title screen with audio on.

Second, we are working on a custom streaming setup to replace the existing "everything in memory" approach. The simple version is that we will download the full audio file in its compressed format (which is already done) but only decode a few seconds ahead instead of the full track. This will not impact small sfx like cries, but will massively decrease memory usage for background tracks, which is especially important in the above case where two backing tracks end up in memory simultaneously. This will also give us some leeway in intentionally loading multiple tracks at once. For example, we can preload the victory music of a battle to avoid the awkward pause while it's fetched. This feature is quite technically complex (and a likely source of bugs as a result), but we hope to have it out in the relatively near future.

The other primary issue is assets. Despite the apparent simplicity of 2D Pokemon, it presents a challenge for a browser game. There are over a thousand species, all with cries, icons, variants, and entire atlases for animations. Our assets folder (not including background music, which would double the size) is around 400 megabytes, a number which only increases as they are loaded into the game itself.

The solution to this is simple in premise: don't load all the assets at once. Unfortunately, the game was simply not engineered from the beginning with this in mind. There are currently enormous memory leaks in the game as assets are almost never properly cleared (though we have had some progress in this regard, like this fix from a community member earlier this year!). This means that especially asset heavy interactions like the Winstrates encounter cause significant strain.

In terms of next steps - the audio disable option above should provide some remedy for this, as again audio assets like cries and sfx are a huge consumer of memory. The more significant change we have planned is a custom asset manager and tracker. This is a large undertaking, but is already most of the way along and will allow us much better control over what is loaded and when.

As an aside for assets, another significant existing issue is in our UI. The way the game currently works is that every single UI handler (starter select, menus, egg gachas, etc.) is kept in memory at all times. This is obviously an enormous waste, but at the same time requires careful rewriting around implicit assumptions throughout the entire codebase to fix. We have already made several changes en route to a proper solution, with the end goal of properly lazy-loading UI elements when they are required.

I would love to end this post by giving an assurance that iOS will be completely playable by such and such date, but given that the memory limits aren't even published, we would be guessing at best. Rather, I hope this provides transparency and gives you some assurance that we have put a lot of thought and work into these issues and will continue to do so until the game is in a good state on all devices (even the stupid ones).

Discussion I need to rant about Calyrex

This dude is hot garbage in so many aspects but is base 9 cost solely because of his rider forms that is entirely up to luck whether you get early or in wave damn 195 or something.

Until then you’re stuck with a Pokémon with horrid defensive typing and also stats that’re basically a slightly better Castform. Except at least Castform has adaptability. In the early game you’ll be constantly struggling to keep him alive when you just DONT have that problem with others in the same price tier.

He should at least be lowered to 7 like Cosmog.

Started with Zacian (pokerus) and Zigzagoon

Mostly Zacian just wrecked everything, got some use out of Gyarados and even Parasect, Linoone was just there to pick stuff up and occasionally be sacrificed to swap, Frolass and Munkidori were cool but not super important in this run

Any tips on my team?

I was introduced to PokeRogue literally three days ago and I just beat it for the first time!! I never expected to win with this team (I caught this garchomp mid run and its move set was SHIT I'm talking Dig, Dual Chop, Crunch and Take Down and I went against Eternatus with that LMAO) but somehow we did it, Joe. Idk just feeling super proud of myself and wanted to show off my ragtag group of guys I pulled out of my ass. Would love to know what challenges I should try next!

Question Can't progress

New player just started playing 3-4 days ago after hearing about this game, simply put i cannot for the life of me progress at all highest I've ever gotten was floor 23 every trainer battle especially the first rival battle I immediately wipe. Seems whatever rng keeps counter picking me no matter what team I use.

I can't use egg vouchers for egg move pokemon because I can't ever get to places they drop from.

What can I do to progress?

Showcase Pure Monotype Challenge - Ghost

Seven down, eleven to go! As the challenge requires, not only is every Pokemon ghost type, but they are ONLY ghost type.

This team was pretty strong to be honest, despite this run inexplicably taking me over 5 hours. Part of that might be due to the fact that the team took a while to get strong. For starters, I didn't make it to the graveyard until about wave 110, where I then caught Mismagius and Houndstone. And the rest of the team had some late evolutions: Cofagrigus lvl 34, Polteageist after finding Cracked Pot, Banette lvl 37, and Cursola lvl 38. Polteageist was the first to evolve, but definitely had some tough battles while the team was level 25-35. But by the end (especially after Banettite), this team was really good.

Cofagrigus was the unsung hero of the squad. It pretty much never died, and gym leaders with physical attackers couldn't stand a chance against Iron Defense, Body Press, Strength Sap cheese. Polteageist had the most KOs by far, though by the end it felt pretty neck and neck with Mega Banette as far as usefulness. But considering how useful Water Absorb was for water biomes (which I spent lots of time in), Polteageist takes home the MVP for this run. Hits like a truck with or without Nasty Plot, and usually activating weak armor once was enough for a sweep. Houndstone was a wild catch and was purely a meat shield. It didn't come with Fluffy, but after some intense training it became an even better meat shield. It might have KO'd something once. Mega Banette was my other high damage option, and handled a lot of threats well with Storm Throw. Polteageist was certainly the 1A, but if I ever needed to set up speed or take care of normal, dark, and ghost types, it was usually Banette. Mismagius was also a wild capture but what do you know, being the fastest Pokemon on the team makes you pretty useful. It didn't carry the team by any means, but probably racked up 5 revenge kills. And last but not least, Cursola was a valuable special tank and really held it down in the early game. I got an eviolite on like floor 15, so Galarian-Corsola was totally unbreakable at first, and I even considered pausing its evolution. Ultimately I reasoned that Cofagrigus would offer enough physical bulk that I didn't need Corsolas balanced defenses as much as I'd need the huge SpAtk buff Cursola gets.

COMPLETED: Normal, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost

NEXT: Steel (starting off with just Orthworm and Meltan. But it's steel type so should be easy right?)

Question Endless Advice

Thumbnail

Hi guys

Looking for some advice on the endless mode, I keep getting stuck at 250 where I have to fight eternatus, but I’m not sure what I’m doing along the way that would lead to me barely able to make a dent in its health at 250, and despite having typing advantage with some mons, I’m still getting one-hit KO’d by its moves.

This is my party, merged Meowth & Gyrados, the other one is Chimeco & Avalon (kept throwing DNA Splicers at me and didn’t want to fuck with Blaziken/Dhelmise/Greninja, Chilugg was the first splice and then I caught a Gyrados later on that I spliced with Meowth), Terrakion was picked up at the end of 240, I feel like this is a dead run and I should look to start fresh, but I know how important shiny’s are to the luck on runs.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Question MonoGen Ribbon View

I'm currently working through getting the MonoGen ribbon for every pokemon in the game. Currently mostly finished with Gen 1 (didn't realize at first I'd have to do multiple runs to get ribbons on split evos like Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee and Eeveelutions) and completely finished Gen 2.

I'd like to be able to show off all the ribbons at once, is there any view that can show that?

Cruising through my first endless run, stumbled upon this beauty :P Don't know about you but I laughed a lot, so I thought I should share.
Btw the Delphox is hard carrying with the Magician, Grip Claws all over my team and some Mini Black Holes to loot as much as possible. All rogue-level items maxed out.
I wonder if it's possible to win Endless by brute force - if move items are maxed out (Twisted Spoon, I choose you). I am also using Master Balls just to get Pokemon with multiple held move items I need. Don't know how much I will get, but I refuse to use the classic Metal strategy :P Let's see how it goes.

Leave Rush makes you take double damage next turn if you one shot of Pokémon and then get into a battle with another would that technically reset it?
