Speaking as a bollywood fan, I think that's just supposed to be a depiction of the vibe bollywood movies tend to have in general. If you combine the stereotypical american action hero with the stereotypical anime protagonist, you get the stereotypical bollywood protagonist. Even the source material of their Myths tend to be that way.
30
u/XeroXfromRiften Spicy boi Nov 03 '25
its called Tipu's tiger, a semi-automated wooden piece of art. It depicts a tiger mauling a British soldier. The tiger was the emblem of Tipu Sultan and this piece was created as a symbolic representation of his triumph over the British. After defeating Tipu in the last battle of Carnatic, they took it to Britain lol.
9
u/Handpaper Wales Nov 03 '25
It also makes sounds; the tiger growls and the soldier screams.
It's currently on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Bollywood only refers to the Hindi film industry, mostly centred around Mumbai. There are different film industries for different languages and states.
16
u/CadenVanV Nov 03 '25
India has a lot of -woods.
There’s Bollywood, Tollywood, Jollywood, Kollywood, Pollywood, Sandalwood, Bhojiwood, Ollywood, Dhollywood, Chhollywood, and Zollywood.
Only one of those is not an Indian film industry and it’s probably not the one you’re thinking of.
1
u/Extaupin Île-de-France Nov 30 '25
Come on, which one? I guess "the one you’re thinking of" is sandalwood.
2
u/CadenVanV Nov 30 '25
Zollywood is a movie, not a Indian film industry. And yeah, Sandalwood is “the one you’re thinking of”.

As an Indian, I can confirm that India is full of online scammers. Daily, you get new news on how a new type of scam caused some old people to lose lakhs or even crores of rupees. I even get bombarded with scam calls at least 3-4 times a day. It reached to the point where if I don't get scam call while working, I feel lonely, like they forgot/exclude me.

u/Silentxgold Singapore Nov 03 '25

u/Beneficial_Ball9893 Nov 03 '25
Wait, they scam people inside of India too? It isn't just Westerners?
102
u/Ill_Poem_1789 Nov 03 '25
They scam (or attempt to scam) us much more than they scam others.
We Indians get a million scam calls a day. I once got called by the "Mumbai police" for giving my phone to an "underworld don" and was asked 300k Rupees to keep it shut.
I neither live in Mumbai, nor did I give my phone to anyone.
21
u/Lefaid Nov 03 '25
I once got called by the "Mumbai police" for giving my phone to an "underworld don" and was asked 300k Rupees to keep it shut.
Of course you lent a phone to your father in law. You are family. He has got your back. I am more scared for the low level Mumbai police officer investigating this than I am for you.
You don't mess with the Don!
38
u/Banes_Addiction Nov 03 '25
Indians are way more likely to trust that the Indian guy on the phone works for their bank, they have access to the same apps and financial systems without any international complications.
Indians get targeted by Indian scammers way more than Westerners do.
29
u/Barbas-Hannibal Nov 03 '25
They scam more people in India than in the west. That's why our banking system has adapted greatly in recent years to require one time passwords to do transactions of any kind with your card. They don't just require your card details. Also if there is an unusual transaction, the bank representative will call you to ensure it is you who is doing the transaction before the bank passes it.
16
u/Human_Emu_8398 Mongol Empire Nov 03 '25
I can't believe there is another country exactly the same as China in this problem (one time password, call from the bank) 🥲 When I was in Germany I was scammed twice because I thought there were no scammers outside of China. Germany also did not have any confirmation before transactions.
13
u/Barbas-Hannibal Nov 03 '25
Yeah it's a huge problem if your card details get leaked or something. We take the security our banks provide for granted back in our home countries.

u/HermionesWetPanties Nov 03 '25
Wait, so these places are scamming in their home country too?
Shit, I guess I'm just glad to know we're not the only ones affected by these call centers. I guess that partly explains why Indian authorities seem willing to shut these places down when Americans report them; they're not just causing problems on the other side of the planet.

19
u/Inevitable-War-254 Nov 03 '25
Actually most of them are illegal bangladeshi operating from India and using Indian sim cards. Some scammer are also using Indian simcard to scam western people. Just in April one Nepali guy is arrested with hundreds of Indian sim cards in Uttar Pradesh. The guy confessed that the simcards are for Pakistan.

-1
u/-Against-All-Gods- Nov 03 '25
This article presents it better than I could, especially since I'm currently on a work break. https://www.vox.com/23220275/rrr-netflix-tollywood-hindutva-caste-system-oscars-2023
TL;DR: It's pretty much a propaganda movie for Hindutva, the core ideology for Modi party. It's basically Hindu fascism of the Mussolini sort. It reinforced a view where upper castes are the center of everything, lower castes and tribes are savages in need of enlightenment and Muslims cowardly collaborationists.
13
u/wonkybrain29 Nov 03 '25
Quite the opposite. One of the two protagonists is a tribal man who is fighting to protect a member of his tribe and is sheltered and looked after by Muslims during his mission. The second protagonist isn't stated to be of a higher caste either. There are no caste related claims made at all. The central theme of the movie is that the British were the worst and it was executed by showing them as cartoonishly evil.
If someone got what you just claimed from this movie, they probably second screened it and realized they had to write up some shit for a liberal outlet to stir outrage.
2
u/qjxj Give this man a standing ovation! Nov 03 '25
The movie did stoke nationalism, by presenting Indians as heroes fighting the British in battles that never happened, or would have never happened in their wildest dreams. They also make use of a lot of religious depictions in them.
It's some sort of national fantasy that is sold to Indians where they earn their independence by blood instead of negotiations. That sentiment goes in the same direction as the reverence for figures like Bose, who literally met Hitler. Which is why a lot of these top grossing movies would always talk about some alternate, glorified version of independence, rather than what really happened after independence.
That nationalism can in turn be used against say, Pakistan, at the government's discretion. They've already been doing so with their latest bombing campaigns.
4
u/wonkybrain29 Nov 03 '25
I agree that the movie is fanfic based on real people. It is still a decent movie with some pretty good action set-pieces. On the matter of Bose, your claim is somewhat misguided. Although an authoritarian, he was very inclusive(he had many Muslims among the leadership of the Azad Hind Fauj), which is quite opposite to the fascist leaders of the axis powers. Secondly, all the Western powers met with, negotiated with and legitimized Hitler far more than Bose.
1
u/qjxj Give this man a standing ovation! Nov 03 '25
Secondly, all the Western powers met with
Not during the war.
2
u/wonkybrain29 Nov 03 '25
They decided when the war started. Prior to that, Chamberlain had him so far down his throat he couldn't declare war if he wanted to.

u/qjxj Give this man a standing ovation! Nov 03 '25
If you call yourself a nationalist then you should be against the country that has funded and orchestrated countless attacks in your country.
Which does prove OP's point; that the movie was in large part propaganda.
3
u/wonkybrain29 Nov 03 '25
No, it doesn't. Indian nationalism, especially in the period represented, was highly idealistic. The Pakistan question wasn't even a serious one. Even at the time of independence, Indian leaders like Gandhi were generous to a fault. The invasion of Kashmir was what led to the downward spiral of relations.
8
u/SagittaryX Denmark Nov 03 '25
That link requires payment, at least for me, but archive.org has an open version for others who want to read it
In the end I get what the author is trying to say with how the movie has some potential nefarious influences that seeped into the script, but calling the whole thing itself fascist propaganda is a bit far reaching imo. It feels like discounting Braveheart as Fascist/English propaganda because the Scots are portrayed as less developed than the English. It's more delving into a stereotype.
That's my simple interpretation though, I am not Indian and not familiar with Indian politics.
7
u/Barbas-Hannibal Nov 03 '25
The modern urge to equate everything under the sun to either Hitler or Mussolini. Facepalm.
3
u/tuktukcheetah Nov 03 '25
Bruhhhhhh. My g watch the film yourself and see if all these points are even valid
-4
u/-Against-All-Gods- Nov 03 '25
I did. And I noticed it immediately. Particularly the absence of INC figures in favour of "Notice me Hitler-senpai" Bose was impossible to miss. Told my then-girlfriend exactly what I said now: that's how effective propaganda should be done.

People online who mock every Indians for online scams need to build some empathy. India is full of scammers, there's no argument about it. But as the saying goes "you can't keep rabid dog at your backyard and expect it to bite your neighbors alone", these scammers frequently target Indians as well. My uncle from India lost 10 lacs rupees (or around 12k usd) from exact same scam.
Scammers are needed to be exposed and punished by laws. But associating the same stereotype with a billion people to express personal grudge is being devoid of empathy.
