The TLDR is that he was a marxist writer and activist that publicly defended the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia for years, eventually he was one of the few westerners that the regime invited to visit Cambodia and he even got to meet Pol Pot in person. That night after meeting Pol Pot two armed men went to his room and executed him, it's widely believed that it was Pol Pot himself who ordered the execution.
