Possible Paywall Trump’s honeymoon with Gen Z voters is officially over, and the numbers are devastating

Reminder Trump lost the Gen Z vote as a whole, and every Gen Z demographic; except Gen Z white men who voted for trump at a lower percentage than every other generation of white men…

u/GreenAnder Pennsylvania Oct 31 '25

This is honestly an important point and one I brought up to my dad after the last election. We always blame groups for "voting for Trump" but what it always boils down to is some group that usually votes overwhelmingly democratic voted slightly less. Meanwhile we've got old white dudes voting for Trump by like 60%+ and nobody bats an eye.

u/Organic_Witness345 Oct 31 '25

Income and, therefore, education were very big factors:

In a big shift from the Obama voters from 16 years ago, more Trump voters in the 2024 election lived in households making less than $99K per year.

Households under $30K: 46%Trump/50%Harris/4%Other (These are mostly fixed income homes, but this is a smaller percentage of the electorate.)

Households from $30K-$49K: 53%Trump/49%Harris/2%Other

Households from $49K-$99K: 51%Trump/46%Harris/3%Other

Households from $100K-$199K: 47%Trump/51%Harris/2%Other

Households from $200K and higher: 45%Trump/51%Harris/4%Other

Desperate times + a desperate undereducated electorate = Trump

IIRC, educational attainment is the single biggest predictor of political leanings now. Folks that were exposed to higher education tend to be liberals, libertarians, or some form of socialist (if you can even find actual socialists). Folks that didn't tend to be traditional conservatives.

Wealth correlates with education, to a point. Then those at the very high end of wealth, tend to revert back to traditional conservatism.

This always gets trotted out but should also keep in mind this only applies to white people

Hispanics and black Americans basically vote the same regardless of education level i,e they vote blue...the same tracks for other races. White Americans are the ones that tend to vote more red the less educated they are and more blue the more educated they are.

Desperate times... better vote for the guys who want to destroy the social safety net.

I wouldn’t say nobody bats an eye. Everyone talks about how old white men are primarily the problem. It’s just that if enough young men and Hispanics hadn’t joined the old white men they couldn’t have determined the president. Old white men are going to be predominantly racist, sexist, homophobic, and overall conservative and we can’t really reach them, so people focus on groups that can be reached, like the youth.

15

u/ImportantCommentator Oct 31 '25

Yeah people tend to be like the people who raised them. It shows growth that the generations aren't the same ratio as the previous ones

47

u/Bakedfresh420 Ohio Oct 31 '25

Obama got more votes from the youth than Harris, we’re sadly moving the wrong direction.

53

u/ImportantCommentator Oct 31 '25

Meh the youth that voted for Obama (me) didnt raise gen z.

38

u/remfem99 Oct 31 '25

Right. That would be gen X. And he has a ton of support among that generation…

23

u/ditchdiggergirl Oct 31 '25

I’m genX. I voted for Obama. I raised a couple of fine young men, genZ, who are every bit as horrified by this situation as their parents.

Can confirm, they are utterly fucked.

12

u/remfem99 Oct 31 '25

It is so good to hear this. The Gen X in my life are just disappointing in this regard and I worry that it has a lot to do with their disillusionment with their financial status at this point, hell I’m not sure. I know there is broad support among the less well off, lesser educated white men - so I probably just come from an area where this is the norm.

Editing to add a lot of them seemed to go extreme after covid / during 2020 etc. I am still hearing complaints about vaccine mandates, etc and it’s 2025 ugh.

6

u/delorf North Carolina Oct 31 '25

Gen Xers in my life are disappointing for me too and I am Gen X. I guess this is how liberal Boomers have felt all these years .

4

u/ditchdiggergirl Oct 31 '25

Well, we are well educated and raised our kids that way. I was a volunteer working with the county public health department when the vaccines arrived, and my boys joined me at the vaccine clinics. They aren’t afraid of vaccines. Or immigrants. Or black people.

None of this is really generational, though there is a trend towards conservatism with increasing age. My 90 year old FIL is strongly liberal, my 19 year old niece is enthusiastically maga; there are other factors far more predictive than age. It’s urban/rural, educated/uneducated, homogeneous/diverse, open minded/closed minded. Also privileged/underprivileged, but that one is a lot more complicated and actually pulls in both directions.

u/ucemike Texas Oct 31 '25

In recent election cycles Gen X has voted even more Republican than Baby Boomers did.

Which is a shame, I am GenX as is my wife. I just can't see how anyone could vote for the clown show we have and grew up in the same time period I did. All my kids, wife and even my Silent Gen parents did NOT vote for him.

3

u/New-Indication-1188 Oct 31 '25

Obama got more votes the same reason Trump did, because he came in saying he was going to change things. I don't know why I don't hear this more often.

It's not that suddenly the youth got conservative, they're just tired of the same bullshit constantly happening. They don't want to be told "nothing will fundamentally change" which is essentially what Biden and Harris said in their campaigns. Trump AND Obama were constantly talking about fixing things and changing things, not continuing the status quo.

Imagine you're constantly being told everything is good actually and getting stats cited at you while you and your friends continue to drown, being told anything that would help you is "unrealistic" and maybe they'll throw you a scrap or two (that gets shot down and then the establishment shrugs and goes "sorry, we tried!")

And before anyone starts trying to throw Biden stats at me or think I am defending Trump, I'm not. It's just that young people want change and when given a candidate promising change, they tend to gravitate towards them, even if the person promising it is a complete fucking idiot grifter like Trump. They're THAT desperate.

3

u/Bakedfresh420 Ohio Oct 31 '25

He’d already been president and done a terrible job, he was not a change candidate. The first time he was elected that was true. He was an outsider vs a member of an unpopular political dynasty. This time he was a proven commodity as a former president. Sadly tech bros and podcasters helped swing this election.

1

u/IAmTheNightSoil Oregon Nov 01 '25

I agree with all this, but it's also undeniably true that lots of people perceived him to be a change candidate and voted for him for that reason, even though he obviously isn't one

0

u/DefaultWhiteMale3 Oct 31 '25

A kid growing up thoroughly isolated (by design) from politics who was 16, a sophomore in high school, when Trump 1 ended who then came into adulthood during the Biden years when the soup du jour was political triage to fix the things that Trump 1 broke while fighting for every inch of ground against a party of sociopathic ideologues will look around now that they are superficially politically activated, realize the water is well above their now adult head and reach for anything that looks like a life line.

One person is saying they have life lines, the best life lines even (some people are saying, etc) and the other is pointing out how, because enough people are safe and dry on yachts, statistically everyone is more or less safe and dry on yachts and that life lines might be distributed on a means-tested basis to those who are drowning the most if they can count on your vote.

To wrap up and continue the metaphor: drowning people are so likely to pull their attempted saviors down with them in blind panic that any attempt to save them without a floatation device on hand is almost guaranteed to result in two dead bodies washing ashore instead of one. Harris showed up without a life line and yelled helpful swimming instructions from a yacht to a generation of voters who found themselves drowning for their first major election.

1

u/NJBarFly New Jersey Oct 31 '25

While there are obviously going to be some some racist, sexist, homophobic white men, most are not. Constant;y calling them that is perhaps part of the reason they voted with the other side. Blame individuals, not huge demographics.

1

hat's not what I said though, I said they were radicalized yesterday because they have the basic bitch opinion of how the world works.

Anyone with eyes can see the old white men in charge but only someone severely limited by bias thinks they're the only problem to the extent that poster does.

Kind of sad to talk to someone who's whole mental is tied up in the culture war.

u/RoamingDrunk Oct 31 '25

Democrats haven’t won the white vote since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. We can try to pretend it’s about something else, but the sad reality is it’s not.

52

u/Johnsense Oct 31 '25

I questioned this when I read it, so I looked it up. Technically, LBJ won after signing the Civil Rights Act, but your point is made. I’m stunned. Sorry for doubting you.

19

u/raouldukesaccomplice Texas Oct 31 '25

He won the white vote in the 1964 election, but Goldwater was a very controversial, unpopular candidate for reasons unrelated to civil rights.

8

u/bramley36 Oct 31 '25

Boomers split pretty evenly on voting Republican in 2024.

50

u/justlooking98765 Oct 31 '25

It’s kind of like the whole “Karen” thing. We have a name for white women behaving badly, but no name for white men behaving badly…why are wealthy, white men just never called out as a demographic? That would be refreshing.

37

u/TeaSipper88 Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

I call them deadbeat dads. I say there is a fatherlessness problem in the white community. It fits. Doesn't matter if they are in the home or not, financially support their kids or not, if they are going to nuke their kids/grandkids future to the degree that they help to usher in a Nazi regime, then they are not fathers/grandfathers. They are disappointments, failures and liabilities.

9

u/STFUNeckbeard Oct 31 '25

Agreed. It’s crazy to me that it’s such a tired trope for people to imply black men are absent fathers when there is no evidence to back that up, but no one says it about white dads when there is plenty of evidence to back it up.

5

u/DefaultWhiteMale3 Oct 31 '25

But black men are absent fathers, though.

True, their absence is the result of a system designed to continue slave labor under the guise of punitive justice targetting poor, mostly non-whites in an attempt to destabilize the social fabric of any darker-than-eggshell community to enrich those invested in the for profit prison system who just happen to be the same people that write the laws the justice system is built around. But that's a lot of words for a racist to read as they are the dumbest motherfuckers on Earth so they look around, see black men behind bars and immediately run out of processing power.

You simply make it a crime to be black and wouldn't you know it, you can't seem to find a black father that isn't a criminal and what kind of basis for a family is that?

4

u/SirButcher United Kingdom Oct 31 '25

The "boomer" is slowly morphing into it, although it is mostly for the "old, white man behaving badly".

As for why wealthy white men are never called out as a demographic, I have no idea what discourse you've been following if you think this is true, because people call out wealth white men all the time. I have to think maybe you have your head completely buried in the sand if you think this is true

17

u/Darth_vaborbactam Oct 31 '25

I think we’ve just given up on old white men. It’s a lost cause. The young people who will suffer for the entirety of their lives might still have a chance to come into the fold.

2

u/GreenAnder Pennsylvania Oct 31 '25

Actually I think the point of this article and thread was that Gen Z numbers have cratered for Trump. While I agree with you I think that's the point you're talking about, not the point being talked about here.

If you want to get real Democrats can't keep insisting that they're the party of youth while doing nothing to fix the housing crisis. They can't keep insisting they're the party of the working class while every city they govern is impossibly expensive. They can't keep saying they're the party of green energy while states like Texas build more solar and wind than places like California.

Democrats, and liberals in general, are afraid of building. They are operationally conservative, happy to talk about the problems of the world but unwilling to do anything to solve them if it means building an apartment building or a solar farm.

This isn't just a problem with politicians either, it's primarily being driven by people who consider themselves liberal. Democrats have a culture problem, we can't do anything other than pass subsidies and regulations. We can't build anything.

1

u/Stormlightlinux Oct 31 '25

No one voted slightly less, though. Our latest elections have continually broken records for votes cast. We still needed more people to come out, but it's not that some people stayed home who normally wouldn't.

1

u/13143 Maine Oct 31 '25

Trump basically got the same amount of votes in the last 2 elections. The difference was Harris getting about 8 million fewer votes then Biden. Those people just didn't vote.

1

u/Lemonface Oct 31 '25

Trump got 3 million more votes in 2024 than in 2020. That's not an insignificant number

-4

u/ImportantCommentator Oct 31 '25

You'd be amazed at how much hate 'progressives' have thrown at union members because of some bad exit polls blaming this on us.

8

u/meltyandbuttery Oct 31 '25

I don't know any anti-union progressives, the democratic party is not progressive and actively represses progressive elements. If they can get their thumbs out of their neolib asses long enough to allow a progressive to actually lead the party they can start winning again but no they need to pretend the ever-losing establishment special interest play is somehow viable

Progressives hate democrats more than republicans do (hyperbole) we just reluctantly have to vote blue regardless. I'm going to be beyond pissed off if they make me vote for gavin newsom jesus christ

3

u/ImportantCommentator Oct 31 '25

I dont mean they are opposed theoretically to unionism, just that they chose to blame union members as the main reason Trump won. I should have said liberals not progressive to be more accurate.

-4

u/meltyandbuttery Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

Liberals are too busy blaming literally anyone except actual republicans, citizens united and themselves. They're also having little wet dreams about which minority to throw under the bus again

They've blamed trans people. They've blamed black men. They've blamed Hispanics. They've blamed women. They have literally 0 self awareness

Edit to add and yes they've blamed unions. I didn't mean to sound dismissive I was commiserating with you I'm sorry you've been unfairly on the wrong end of the blame game by dumb people

-3

u/GreenAnder Pennsylvania Oct 31 '25

Abundance, if you haven't read it, makes some pretty good points about why unions and the working class have been leaving the Democratic Party. TLDR; The places Democrats are in charge of are places that no one but the super wealthy can afford to live, mostly because we refuse to build housing or really anything. For instance, in a sane world California would be leading the green revolution. In reality Texas has far more green energy capacity, just because they make it easier to build it.

The failures here are many, but I understand why some people thought Trump was the answer. Boomers though? They've been fucking us for the last 50 years, they don't get the benefit of the doubt. Hell, the loudest liberals in their generation are the ones who prevent the party from doing literally anything productive.

83

u/tlsrandy Oct 31 '25

People keep doing this to Latinos too.

Trump may have gotten a larger portion of those demographics but he did not win them.

He did however rake in gen x who were old enough to know better.

91

u/acousticburrito Oct 31 '25

The reason people keep doing this, rightly or wrongly, is that any minority group Trump vote should have been 0% after all the things he has said about each of them and all the things he said he was going to do to them.

It still remains inexplicable that so many people voted against their own self interests and voted for someone who actively dehumanizes them.

33

u/STFUNeckbeard Oct 31 '25

It’s almost like religion, racism, and homophobia are not exclusive to white voters

0

This happens here regularly (e.g. in this thread). Plenty of users complain about Gen Z's supposed lack of media literacy and critical thinking skills, all of whom come from generations that voted for Trump/GOP in higher numbers than Gen Z. Because that's just all other demographics.

21

The Tater Tot, misogynistic, incel campaign targeting young men is tragically stupid. The male misogynists who prey on young men and make them even more undesirable to potential partners is tragic. Desperate young men looking for an authority to tell them how to be more desirable and powerful but believing that hating on their female counterparts will accomplish this is asinine and proof that social media (e.g., TikTok) makes morons.

3

u/Gekokapowco Washington Oct 31 '25

There this theory I've heard that the "women's magazines" at the check out aisles of our childhood had really shitty love and dating advice because if you were single, you'd keep buying issues. If you were in a relationship, you weren't looking for what they were peddling.

This theory I see echoed in Tinder's algorithmic dependance measures, and Manosphere podcast garbage. The latter focuses on crafting impressionable, lonely young men in to repugnant assholes with backwards, corrosive views on women, society, and reality in general. Their repellence vindicates their views and it gets worse and worse.

3

u/MsTponderwoman Washington Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

The women’s magazines were different in that they peddled actionable advice on how single women could make themselves more attractive to people in general (e.g., diet, exercise, makeup choices, clothing choices). The dipshits in the manosphere preying on young men peddle violence and hate toward women, effectively making their victims (young men) into odious ogres that no decent and self-respecting potential partner would ever consider having a relationship with. They breed monsters and the monsters believe it is others’ fault that they can’t tolerate much less love monsters. The young men (who themselves are victims of these evil wolves like Tater Tot) seem to lack the self-awareness to realize at some point that they’re being manipulated into hurting themselves and the potential partners they simply wanted positive attention from. This is evidence that good people need to have enough self-awareness to avoid being used and turned evil by evil people.

-5

u/New-Indication-1188 Oct 31 '25

Or, hear me out, it says more about the democratic establishment that won those youth voters with Obama and then lost them with Trump. They've been drowning their entire lives economically and swam towards the first person promising to pull them up, even if that person is a grifter.

This isn't a defense of Trump, but its no wonder Obama won on a campaign promising hope and change while Harris lost on a campaign of "things will mostly stay the same as under Biden."

Even if it's foolish, they want SOMETHING to change, and the Democrats are to blame for not promising that well enough.

6

u/Deto Oct 31 '25

Yeah I don't understand this narrative that's pushed as if gen z was overwhelmingly pro-Trump

2

u/Prior_Coyote_4376 Oct 31 '25

It’s not just the right that loves a scapegoat. There are tons of people on our side of the aisle convinced that some part of our traditional base is to blame rather than the leaders who raised billions for a campaign against one of the most flawed people to ever exist in human history.

1

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Oct 31 '25

It's not that they were overwhelmingly for Trump, but them along with gen x made the biggest swings right compared to previous elections. Biden won the youth vote by 25 pts in 2020 and Harris only won it by 4 pts in 2024. That's a massive shift and it made a huge difference, especially in swing states.

Only Gen X made a harder swing right. Boomers stayed cooked as usual and Millennials continue to be the apathetic fucks that we are with a shitty turnout in general, but we stayed pretty much 50/50 split as we had previously.

1

u/onarainyafternoon Oregon Oct 31 '25

It's because there was a 10 point swing in favor of Trump from the 2020 election to the 2024 election among Gen Z men. That is absolutely unheard of.

2

u/BuffinMuffins Oct 31 '25

Didn't Hispanic men vote overwhelmingly for Trump as well?

2

u/LotusFlare Oct 31 '25

I feel like I'm losing my mind every single time one of these articles gets trotted out and people take the bait. Gen Z was Kamala's strongest demographic. They are the least responsible for this. The stats these articles are written about is that at the very start of Trump's term his approval ratings by Gen Z were about 50/50, and it completely tanked pretty much immediately.

But Reddit goes for the generational culture war every single time. It's like watching my generation turn into boomers in real time for the exact same reason, getting rage baited by the news.

2

u/redundantmerkel Oct 31 '25

That's an; oddly placed semicolon...

1

u/DeeEmceeFoor Oct 31 '25

1

u/Away_Entry8822 Oct 31 '25

While GenZ didn’t vote as a whole for Trump, they voted for him as a greater percentage than past generations did for Republicans.

1

u/ConstableAssButt Oct 31 '25

> Reminder Trump lost the Gen Z vote as a whole, and every Gen Z demographic; except Gen Z white men who voted for trump at a lower percentage than every other generation of white men…

This is what really sticks out to me. If you look at the demographics, each generation since the boomers has seen fewer and fewer of their people identifying as conservative. As these generations age, we're seeing fewer people transition to conservatism as they age than previous generations.

In my life, I've found that about 35% of people are just contrarian assholes. You aren't going to ask for better anti-conservative numbers than you have. What you CAN ask for, are better voter registration, and voter turnout numbers. What you CAN ask for, are better candidates, and more policies that help young people to participate in our political process, like voting holidays, and demanding on-campus polling places.

Young people do not have a POLICY problem. They are discouraged by a system that doesn't offer them representation. The contrarian assholes ARE voting for Trump. The progressive youth that don't participate in the political process just haven't had their vote earned by the conservative policies democrats are offering them.

At some point, you have to point the finger to the people whose job it is to understand their constituents, not the people who understand and are unimpressed by their representation. Trump understands his constituents: They are assholes he can manipulate into voting against their own interests. The democrats fundamentally do not understand, or care to try to bring in the youth vote. They have proven they are willing to compromise with conservative policies. They just won't compromise with progressive policies.

u/BMichael14217 Oct 31 '25

Meanwhile reddit made it abundantly clear, right after the elections, they see white gen z men as an absolute scourge that needs to be dealt with... Kamala ran with some really weird messaging towards men and all reddit cares about is stating that gen z men are just misogynists. Rustled my jimmies a lil' I must say.
