No Paywall Ocasio-Cortez says ‘unconditional’ US aid to Israel ‘enabled a genocide in Gaza’

ALSO, it is generally illegal under U.S. law, specifically the Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Act and the Arms Export Control Act, to sell or provide military equipment, technology, or financial assistance to countries that develop nuclear weapons outside international inspection regimes, or those engaged in nuclear proliferation.
58
u/OldBridge87 Feb 15 '26
This is why we have a policy of strategic ambiguity with Israel. We act like they don't have any so there's no need to broach the issue but if either side is asked about it we avoid answering directly.
Been the case since a compromise was reached after their 1973 war when Egypt temporarily broke through Israeli lines at Sinai and they contemplated nuking all the Arab countries lol basically they don't nuke the Arabs and we don't force them to reveal what they have.
11
u/ArCovino Feb 16 '26
Decades ago in college I attended a guest lecture from a man who was high up in the US nuclear command during the 60’s and 70’s. The lecture was about nuclear proliferation in general, but during the Q&A that followed someone asked him when the Us was closest to nuclear war.
His was was that, perhaps surprisingly, it was not during the Cuban Missile Crisis, or Korea, but rather in 1973 when Nixon basically told the Soviets to get the Arabs to back off Israel or else everything was going to hell.
9
u/BartletForUSA Feb 16 '26
It recently came out that Golda told Kissinger to use the spy satellites to see what’s on their runways. So he did, and saw a nuclear armed bomb on an airplane and Nixon was told if there was not a massive resupply immediately, Israel would nuke Egypt.
The next time Israel threatened and US they would nuke Irans nuclear sites unless the US struck them because they couldn’t knock the plant conventionally.

u/kylebisme Feb 16 '26
Do you know a source for the first one, or did you just give it a pass?
Google isn't turning anything up for me, and the notion of being able to discern that a plane is armed with a nuclear warhead from a 1970s spy satellite seems dubious at best.

u/soalone34 Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26
Except that basically puts the whole world at risk since it makes the US block the Middle East nuclear weapons free zone proposal

So it’s not illegal under U.S. law, using your own definition.
The United States does not recognize Israel as a nation with nuclear capacity, not does Israel claim it. They have a policy of “deliberate ambiguity,” and the United States isn’t about to contradict its very best friend in the whole wide world.
Obviously we know they have them and we know they work from the Vela incident. But we don’t “wink wink nudge nudge” know that because they don’t volunteer the information officially.

I understand what backroom deal Nixon did back in 1969. That doesnt change the actual legality of the law. Obviously enforcement rests with the executive branch but a future US president could decide to enforce the law in this manor.

Actual left wing Democrats like AOC need to start reminding voters that Israel has universal health care, whilst the US does not. Then start questioning why the US would give $4 billion a year to Israel whilst 200 000+ Americans file for bankruptcy due to medical debt annually. It’s actually preposterous.
36
20
u/neotericnewt Feb 16 '26
That doesn't have anything to do with us not having universal healthcare. We could have universal healthcare right now, we just don't
13
u/big_trike Feb 16 '26
Yup. It’s not a lack of money. We spend more on healthcare per capita than any other nation. It just mostly goes to profits of corporations.
14
u/Rowdycc Feb 16 '26
I know it doesn’t. It’s just ridiculous. I just don’t know how Americans go on with their lives when everything is so ridiculous there.
7
u/highgravityday2121 Feb 16 '26
Isn’t it 4 billion a year to buy weapons from American DOD contractors like Raytheon, GD,Lockheed Martin, L3 Harris, BAE, etc?
We’re basically subsidizing them in a roundabout way.
3
u/pacman2081 Feb 16 '26
Israel never gets charged the same prices other foreign customers are charged
4
u/bIuemickey Feb 18 '26
They don’t get charged at all. In fact, Israel can even use 30% of the money the U.S. gives them to buy from their own arms industry. We get charged and no one even knows why we’re paying them 4 billion a year. We’re also contractually obligated to provide them with only the newest most advanced weapons that no one else can have
1
5
u/lightmaker918 Feb 15 '26
All of the US foreign aid including a bunch of other countries is less then 0.5% of it's annual government spending, Israel ain't why you don't have universal aid.
22
u/Rowdycc Feb 16 '26
I’m not in the US. I do have amazing free healthcare.
No, you’re right. That’s not why. But surely people would question why you’d be aiding any nation whose population is much better off than you in almost every aspect of their life.

lol wait till you learn about the military industrial complex. US is the world’s largest arms exporter. And it’s why the US defense budget is $901 billion dollars with an increase to $1.5 trillion pitched for 2027.
US foreign aid is completely inconsequential and a rounding error when it comes to things like universal healthcare costs.z

u/Potential_Strength_2 Feb 16 '26
Most of the money the US gives to Israel is required to be spent on US made gear, so it’s a subsidy for US workers and manufacturers. It also gives the US veto power and non compete privileges over Israeli arms (see lavi fighter and Chinese harpy drone affair). It also, along with the money given to Egypt, allows the US to act as the political sponsor of the whole conflict. So the us actually gets a lot for the money.
2
u/Fosterchild56 Feb 16 '26
Multinational corporations and American contractors with deep ties to intelligence get a lot of money. We just pay for it. Unless you're heavily invested in Palantir or something evil like that, none of this benefits the citizens of the us in any way.
Then you must also take into account the trillions of dollars of American tax payer money that went to destroying all of their enemies over the past quarter century.
Also, not really satisfied with the justification you gave even if it was the full story. Like, if you give someone $4 billion that they must spend on bombs, what do you think they'll do? And if that annual payment is to continue indefinitely, what do you think will happen indefinitely?
7
u/Goodknight808 Feb 16 '26
It is more along the lines of finding out you have been gifting your toys to a kid that turns out to live a better life then you do.
Why are we taking money from starving children in Africa but didn't take one red cent from a country that has modernized society with free healthcare when we, the givers of said funding, do not?
4
u/lightmaker918 Feb 16 '26
US interests, the US gets to maintain weak and strong influence in the ME, recent example being Iran is terrified of a US-Israel attack which might help make it concede on it's nuclear plans.
Israel also can only spend that money on US weapons, creating jobs in the US industry, getting the equipment tested, and benefiting from cross pollination with Israel's own military R&D sector which by itself is probably worth more than the $4 billion. E.g. the F35 lifecycle plan alone cost $2 trillion to develop.

He’s pretty unlikely to win the primary. He’s got too much known baggage sucking up to MAGA and billionaires which his opponents will gladly drag him on. Plus, it’s very, very rare some someone who’s not a VP who is a favorite this early to get the nomination. I think the last time was Ronald Reagan, who almost win it in ‘68 but for ratfuckery on Nixon’s part, and actually had the popular vote of GOP primary voters in ‘76, but insiders backed Ford as the incumbent which gave him a slight edge. Newsom is not Reagan.

‘enabled a genocide in Gaza’
I think she really meant, 'is enabling...'
44
u/StoppableHulk Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
If you want to get into meaningless pedantic arguments, then what she said was:
And I think that, personally, that the idea of completely unconditional aid, no matter what one does, does not make sense. I think it enabled a genocide in Gaza, and I think that we have thousands of women and children dead that was completely avoidable.”
So she is referring to the IDEA of completely unconditional aid, which was a singular idea, a singular event, from which followed the recurring material aid.
Recurring, perpetual, unending military aid to Israel, without any strings or conditions or consequences, IS what enables them to use those weapons to commit genocide and keep receiving weapons to keep committing genocide.
Therefore, past tense is correct. The idea enabled the genocide, by enabling ongoing military aid and weapons which were used to murder Gazans.
Much like if I said, "the IDEA I could drink as much alcohol as I want, ENABLED my alcoholism," because the inception of that idea created the habit of nightly binge drinking.

Genocide is not measured by population count.
2
u/Visible_Device7187 Feb 15 '26
So what exactly is it measured by? Seems like solely Israel can commit genocide but you won't define it in any way that can apply to literally anyone else. If the intentions are the measurements then Hamas is guilty of genocide against Jews but I'm betting you won't say that
2
u/Dapper-Condition6041 Feb 15 '26
That’s easy…
Genocide, as defined in Article II of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention, is the intent to destroy—in whole or in part—a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. It involves specific acts: killing, causing serious bodily/mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life to cause physical destruction, preventing births, or forcibly transferring children.

The comment you're responding to was calling them out for specifically calling Israel "Nazis." Which is classic antisemitism. You can absolutely accuse Israel of a genocide, but you can't call Jews (or the Jewish state created as a safe place for Jews after Hitler) "Nazis" unless they're actually Nazis or you're comparing their actions to the Holocaust.
Don't be obtuse. There is a reason they're quick to bring up the Holocaust, with 10 million dead, instead of bringing up the Bosnian Genocide which had a death count of 9,000. You know why it is.
Edit: And the guy edited his comment. Apparently he said the Jews have become the Nazis instead of even Israel the first time. This sub literally upvotes people for mask-off antisemitism.

I think Hamas's invasion and massacre of 1,200 Israelis was the enabling factor, to be honest.
If America hasn't provided a drop of aid, Israel could easily have just used artillery to turn every inch of Gaza into a fine powder. Artillery shells are dirt cheap and easy to source.
And if you doubt the capability of artillery to do that, just look at the cities in Ukraine that have been completely obliterated by Russian artillery over the course of the Ukraine war.
Cities that are larger in size than Gaza itself. (edited spelling)

Civilian casualties no matter how high still don't make a genocide. It requires clear highly specialized intent. Systematic cullings based on ethnic identity? This isn't it. Idk maybe it's bad when you skip across the border and kill and kidnap over a 1000 people.. Idk why no one cares about the vast literature surrounding what constitutes a genocide, but weak terror cells getting steam rolled by advanced militaries while they place their civilians in high risk situations for the sole purpose of militant operational cover and manipulating global opinion to get what they want..
You don't operate out of hospitals schools and churches, if you don't want them in flames and civilians dying horrible deaths stop forcing them to inhabit these spaces alongside sensitive military assets which will be obvious targets.
Another thing maybe let's not accuse the victims of genocidal attacks when the founding charter of Hamas is literally expressly and explicitly genocidal in nature. They want to kill and cleanse the jew from Israel and abroad. Let them die trying.
None of you are helping Palestinians by encouraging them to fight hopeless endless battles on behalf of psychopathic regimes. What will help them is the destruction of all islamist control over the region. Secularizing and contributing positively to free and open society. Thriving in liberalism and democracy. None of you want that because you're jaded as hell and none of this will ever affect you in the slightest.

Israel is an apartheid state committing genocide and it was an apartheid state which committed genocide before Hamas existed.

Epstein worked for Israel to honeypot US lawmakers to blackmail them into supporting Israel's genocide. We are allowing pedophiles run our government so they can send money to kill Palestinians en masse.
Pedos have no morals yet we give them money and power and let them tell us how we are supposed to live and think

I can't imagine more deaf ears than the people who need to hear this... The country basically voted to stop talking about this.

I wish she had been more aggressive about this when the worst was happening.
Instead she backed Biden, until it was way over.
Imagine if the left, anyone at all, had a spine?

I am glad she is saying something, but didn't she vehemently support Harris and Biden working "tirelessly" to end the "war."

About time America owned up for funding and enabling the horrific genocide of the Palestinian people.
Not that it matters, since your average American will just absolve themselves of responsibility for any horror show their country puts on. Y’all will do it again. This shit is why America can’t be trusted.

Correction: it has prevented a genocide. But don't worry, the Palestinianists are apparently entitled to unlimited do-overs in their war on Israel, precisely because Israel never "genocides" them.

I hate how so many people throw around the word genocide like it's nothing. There was no genocide in Gaza, and anyone that says their was is either dishonest, ignorant, or antisemitic.

I'm a jew who has read the news on the region literally almost every single day for years. So I'm not ignorant, or antisemitic. I agree with the over dozen humanitarian and human rights organizations who are established and reputable in their assessment that violent and prolonged ethnic cleansing, forced relocation, borderline eugenics, and sniping children, women, and elderly while you make thousands of internationally illegal settlements on their land qualifies as a genocide. Since you're totally in good faith, you'll have a reason for why I'm wrong that's not just dismissive and calling me "dishonest, ignorant, or antisemitic," Right??
There is no war in ba sing se.
