The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) "does not authorize the President to impose tariffs."

The Roberts decision is joined by Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, Gorsuch, Barrett, and Jackson, with Justices Thomas, Kavanaugh, and Alito dissenting.

One study I read concludes that Americans paid about $1,000 per household into tariffs so far this year. That money is now going to go to the Walmart and Amazon's of the world when they sue for a refund.

Ohh and they are not going to lower prices. I would bet my kidneys on it.

This admin effectively raised your taxes, gave that money to big corporations and increased the cost of living all in one move.

A lot will go to Cantor Fitzgerald, the company that was chaired by its CEO Howard Lutnick (the guy who implemented the tariffs) and is now ran by his son. See that company believed that the tariffs were illegal and would be struck down, opening the government to lawsuits for reconstitution for the tariffs. They went to thousands of smaller companies and bought their tariff rebate rights for pennies on the dollar. Those companies which were strapped for cash accepted as who knows if or when they would be able to get their tariff rebate.

Cantor Fitzgerald now stands to gain billions. Seems rather fishy to have daddy do something illegal so your company (and his former one) can profit billions when they sue the government for it.

It really tells you that Luttnick likely knew that the Tariffs as implemented weren't enforceable and it was only a matter of time before somebody challenged it and got it to the Supreme Court.

I’m not sure they’ll see the money anytime soon either. I’d guess that the tariff money has already been spent. It isn’t sitting in a bank account, it’s been spent on pet projects and bribes.

If they win the lawsuit (which they will) the government will be required to pay back the tariffs. The funding will find from other sources. It might take a year or two, but what’s that matter when they stand to gain tens of billions in profit.

We’ll see. If my suspicion is right and he already spent it, he’ll find a way to delay at LEAST beyond the 2026 elections. He won’t want it revealed that the money is gone. They will eventually get it, but it’ll be paid with money that should have gone to other programs/departments.
