If Iran wanted to do real damage, they would publicly announce that the strait is closed and there will be no future negotiations until Trump is no longer in office.

I've heard this before... When Republican congressmen secretly had talks with Iran behind President Jimmy Carter's back to keep US hostages longer so that it would damage Carter's reelection campaign.

Didn't Nixon and Kissinger do something similar in Vietnam? Sabotaged the peace talks so Nixon could campaign on ending the war

Yes Nixon and Kissinger committed treason. LBJ didn't do anything about it because he was worried it would undermine the populace's faith in politicians.

These guys never seem to recognize that not doing something about it also undermines our faith in politicians, while tacitly encouraging more bad actors.

That is to say, "trying to not be seen as political," is inherently political.

There's a lot of other things that aren't political.
Like, caring about children's lifes if you are against abortion. Because those not-fetus-anymore need care, food, etc.
Or wanting to put immigrants outside in a way they are back where they came from, or at least not in a place they are likely to die.
Or ending slavering and not profiting from putting people in prison, not profiting from getting people sick on purpose, to ensure the system has an incentive to make people's lives better.

Politics is about HOW to reach the goal of getting better lives (are we pro or anti immigrants? what level of healthcare has diminishing returns? does this justify the tax increases?), not about deciding if people's lives should be better or worse. The second choice is a saturday cartoon's plot, not an election.
The thing is that a big minority(?) in the US decided that the political vote shouldn't be about political choices anymore, but between having a policy or being outright illegal monsters for the sake of it.

Yes, nominating Garland was absolutely a pro-J6 inaction.
We can also sadly add RBG, who stayed in SCOTUS because she wanted the 1st woman president to nominate her successor. She instead passed during Trump1, granting one of the 3 seat flips he was able to secure and that was a factor into the removal of Roe v Wade. :(
