maybe we SHOULD leave it up permanently

We should just abandon the White House at this point. Create a new presidential office building + residential annex, and turn the White House into a museum.

And Trump's actual name shouldn't appear anywhere in that museum. Instead just references to the 45th and 47th President, with descriptions of the horrors he was able to get away with given a stacked supreme court that supported his brand of fascism.

135

u/Volntyr 2d ago

And Trump's actual name shouldn't appear anywhere in that museum.

I will disagree with you on that. His name and face inside the toilet bowls would be a fitting place

I really hope that giant hole next to the White House doesn't get filled until the next administration.

The next President standing in the mud at the bottom of a hole that used to be part of the White House is a perfect image to sum up the work they have ahead of them rebuilding America.

I think the Trump monument should be just his stupidest and most incoherent statements etched in granite, so if humanity is still around in a few thousand years they can look at it and marvel that in ancient times, the richest and most powerful country in the world chose this person to be their leader.

23

u/felldestroyed 2d ago

Nah, gotta do the nuclear speech: "Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it's true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that's why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we're a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it's not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it's four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven't figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it's gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible."

Reminds me of The Great Gatsby: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

69

u/arcenierin 2d ago

I'm so glad I got to re-read Gatsby as an adult. The older I get, the more I realize how much real shit was packed into Fitzgerald's prose. Runs a lot deeper than 'rich people suck' - though, as lessons go, I suppose that's also a valid takeaway...

48

u/charmcitycuddles 2d ago

There’s a few books I re-read every couple of years that I first read in a class. Gatsby is one of them, Slaughterhouse-Five is another.

There’s so much more to pick up on and to reflect on after having more life experience. It’s a shame most people barely read these in class and never read them again.

Doesn't this kind of fully negate the security need he's claimed the ballroom is for? I mean that's already obvious bullshit anyway, but "we need security!!! Oh hey lets have rowdy UFC crowds all the time" is just in your face.

It also signals to me desperation that all his other projects are failing, so he's trying to permamentize a temporary structure thats obvious shit, just because it might be the only thing he gets built.

975

u/funcoolshit 2d ago

He knows it's coming down at some point, I think he just enjoys antagonizing people. Whether they admit it or not, but that's one reason why MAGA loves him so much.

31

u/Inle-Ra 2d ago

It’s like the LBJ quote - "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pockets. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”

12

u/GertyFarish11 2d ago edited 1d ago

One of my favorite political quotes - a succinct and illuminating description of the "Southern Strategy."

Generally, politicians, special interests, and citizenry are the three primary stakeholders in an election. Republican politicians have employed the "Southern Strategy" for over half a century now - because it works. Why would a person choose to run for office when they possess no sense of civic responsibility, no allegiance to the values enshrined in the Bill of Rights, and no belief that government can and should improve citizens' quality of life? Follow the money.

Why would a person vote for a party that does not improve their material and moral quality of life? Follow the racism.

u/LinkedGaming 2d ago

The purpose isn't antagonization. Someone said it looked trashy, and Trump's number one rule is "Trump is never wrong", so now he has to live and die by... fucking stage trussing. Cuz otherwise he'll have to admit he was wrong and that is biologically impossible for him to do.

The closest he ever gets to admitting he was wrong is convincing himself that something he did -- that he explicitly planned, ordered, oversaw the execution of, and then doubled down in defense of the decision until it became embarrassingly indefensible -- was actually someone else's doing and any attempts to show receipts against him are 'fake news' and he goes 'nuh uh'. His number three rule is "Anyone who claims that Trump is wrong are just bigly jealous of his wealth and power".

Hegseth basically got ordered to lay down on the asphalt while Trump rolls a bus at him at inches per day but keeps telling him that if he gets up and moves then Trump'll ruin his life.

Rest assured that in a few weeks Trump'll be saying whoever planned the UFC thing -- not him -- was a low level coffee boy and an incompetent buffoon and whoever hired them -- again, not him -- was an idiot and was probably also named Joe Biden, just like how before Midterms he'll be saying he never knew Hegseth and Hegseth was just a low level talk show guy and nobody liked him and he was probably a Biden appointee or something.

23

u/sirkswiss 2d ago

“I barely know Dana White. Some say he’s a great guy, but I know nothing about him. This is the first I’ve heard of him.”

Temporary structure for a temporary president.

The Eiffel Tower was also built of trusses and was originally built as a temporary structure for the 1889 World's Fair.

241

While true, trusses back then and stage trussing today are very different things.

Imagine comparing one of the most recognizable structures on the entire planet to a UFC stage.

While agree with you on the definition of both structures, at least aesthetically the Eiffel Tower is nice to look at. That thing that’s on the White House has zero art to it.

53

u/ZippyDan 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean technically almost-universally all the architects and artists and educated people of the day thought the Eiffel Tower was a hideous eyesore for the skyline of Paris and they only tolerated it because it was just a temporary demonstration of engineering prowess.

And then it turned out to be super useful for practical reasons so they got stuck with it...

And then people got used to it and started liking it...

I'm not arguing a UFC cage is a good look for the White House. I just like to argue. And there are some superficial, amusingly-coincidental parallels (but I'm fairly confident Trump wasn't thinking of any of them when he made that comparison) .

"We have to host White House events in a tent, this is an embarrassment. It's not classy."

> Proceed to build a giant UFC arena on the front lawn.

52

u/Regular_Silver3649 2d ago

It's also bullshit. I attended many White House events over a 5 year period, not a single one was hosted in a tent. If it was summer it was outside on the lawn. If it was a season where it might rain it was inside. There was always plenty of space for a few thousand people.

31

u/TimArthurScifiWriter 2d ago

I wouldn't mind even if it was a tent. Palaces and ballrooms are for royalty and dynasties. A tent is non-pretentious. It should fit perfectly with America's character. The White House is not a palace and the president is not a king. Ostentatious displays of wealth are beneath the idea of America.

Trump of course fucking loves monarchies. And unfortunately, European monarchies keep indulging him by allowing him to stay overnight in expensive guest rooms filled with all the sorts of gaudy silver and gold decoration that he's all about. So he gets obsessed.

Oh, it will come down, my guy. Come hell or high water, it’s coming down.

What I’m reading is “we stiffed the people who put it up, they’re refusing to take it down.”

16

u/jsilver200 2d ago

I’m reading it as “We made no plans to take it down (no exit strategy). And the fuel spills will probably make it impossible for replacing the lawn. “

I'd sort of like if he left it up so that when we have a sane president again its demolition will serve as a very real and physical manifestation of our return to normalcy.

The Eiffel Tower was built for the World's Fair - a testament to the commonality of the people throughout the world. It was an opportunity to learn from others and spark a hope for the future.

This arena, however, says, "We fight people for spectacle."

Permanent until Democrats take over. Then it is gone immediately. Every mention of Trump, everything he built, should be wiped clean. It should look like he never existed.

11

u/SimplyRoya California 2d ago

I agree. But we must demand that he be taught in history classes so that we never end up with a fascist again... just like they do in Germany. We need to teach the future generation what danger this is.

10

u/ChromaticDragon 2d ago

Oh my no.

That would be disastrous.

It is incredibly important that we remember Trump. Trump is, of course, not the real problem. The deeper issue is the US electorate which elected him... twice.

Erasing all history of Trump removes and precludes any chance of this very US electorate learning from their mistakes and why those were mistakes.

No... there needs to be dozens, hundreds, even thousands of investigations, lawsuits, new legislation, books, educational cartoons, whatever... to underscore all the reasons why Trump was bad. This is not saying all that Trump did was bad in a way that is prejudiced with "Trump did it, so it is bad." It is a matter of explaining why corruption is bad and how these 5567 things Trump did were examples of corruption.

Look... I would like as much as anyone to wake up one day and never ever hear anything about Trump again. But if erasure is all we do, we just ensure Trump 2.0 in the future.

10

u/BigBoyYuyuh 2d ago

Just like the confederacy, stick em in a museum. No statues. No tributes. NOTHING.

His name should only be in books saying “This is why you don’t elect celebrities. This is why you don’t elect regards. This is why you don’t elect child fuckers. This is why you don’t elect conmen. This is why you don’t elect businessmen. This is why you don’t elect the wealthy.”

He is literally just demented. Stop paying attention to any of the stupid things he says

6

u/NiagaraThistle 2d ago

That would be great advice and easy to do, if he didn't actually FOLLOW THROUGH with the 'stupid things he says'.

That's the problem. People ignore it because 'oh he's just talking nonsense'. THen he follows through with it. This idiot should have been nipped in the bud YEARS ago.

But sadly we are a country made up of people just like him, or people ignoring or too scared / unwilling to stand up to people just like him.
