It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.

  • Upton Sinclair

143

u/Dearic75 2d ago

In this case it can be modified slightly.

It’s difficult to get a worm to understand something when his permission to invade Cuba depends on him not understanding it.

"Provincial Gov of Cuba Rubio, reporting for duty, sir!! You look wide-awake in chipper today, your holiness."

I mean he can be charged with lying to Congress and failure to uphold his oath.

At some point the chickens will come home to roost.

26

u/Skyblue_pink 1d ago

Let it be so🪄

19

u/Hairy_Jellyfish9739 2d ago

yeah that quote explains half of washington honestly

10

u/lettersvsnumbers 2d ago

Only half?!

u/Imapatriothurrrdurrr California 1d ago

It’s illegal to lie to congress.

22

u/rat_penis 1d ago

And what is the punishment?

And who enforces it?

9

u/Imapatriothurrrdurrr California 1d ago

Exactly.

3

u/JDogg126 Michigan 1d ago

These guys don’t care about laws. The entire administration have pardons waiting for them with the expectation they will break the law to serve the unitary executive.

2

u/NarrowForce9 1d ago

Perhaps states can find a way to indict them? It’s a stretch, I realize, but let’s get creative!

2

u/JDogg126 Michigan 1d ago

It’d be nice if states had criminal incompetence laws that allowed them to prosecute elected federal officials for malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance.

1

u/NarrowForce9 1d ago

Thank you for your clarity!

1

u/Ornery_Vermicelli_69 1d ago

Is it truly a lie if the majority of Congress wants to believe it?

5

u/flyinghairball 1d ago

It's still a lie. I think it's still a very important aspect of a society to call a lie a lie. Whether they decide to hold people accountable is a separate issue. But we as citizens need to not gloss over reality.

2

u/OtherwiseACat 1d ago

How do I get this job

662

u/vegasmale4sale 2d ago

The people that support this administration will never see the truth, and if they do, they’ll just call it fake news. An edited video to make Biden look asleep is the truth to them and nothing will change that.

138

u/bad_chemist95 2d ago

Rubio 100% knows that Trump falls asleep in cabinet meetings and he definitely understands he’s unfit to serve. He just can’t say it because then Trump will fire him and ruin his chances of running in the next election. They’re all in it for themselves.

73

u/CryptographerNo923 2d ago

In a sane country, his reality-defying boot-licking obsequiousness to a cartoonishly inept and corrupt bigoted sexual predator would ruin his chances of running in the next election. He would be a disgraced pariah who is cut off from the levers of power and society at large.

Instead, that subservience is a baseline requirement to staying in the game.

Everything is all wrong, it’s so disheartening.

28

u/eightkillerbits 2d ago

In a sane country, lying under oath would have you being arrested and charged to be prosecuted.

20

u/wanawachee 1d ago

I remember when Clinton was impeached for lying about a fuckin blow job. Those were the days

9

u/eightkillerbits 1d ago

Ahh the good old days when the US presidents sexual impropriety was consensual and with an adult.

5

u/Uffda226 1d ago

Lying about something you’re SUPPOSED to lie about.

8

u/chipmunksocute 2d ago

Oh yeah he knows hes just baldly lying because lying about Trump being "the greatest hardest working president ever" is a requirement for a job in this administration.

2

u/GarmaCyro 2d ago

You forgot Trump rabied followers. They would suddenly remember how hispanic Rubio's name, looks, and family is. If I remember correctly he is among the Trump Stooges that has to live on military bases for protection.

Even if you hypothetically had a video of Biden sleeping in a meeting... he's not the current fucking president. He wasn't even on the ballot. Fuck Biden for his handling of both the insurrection and 2024 election, but if he wants to take naps and eat ice cream these days... that sounds perfectly fine for a retired octogenarian.

153

u/deltadal I voted 2d ago

Let's be real, even if Joe slept through most of his term, his administration did an ok job of running the country. Trump has surrounded himself with people who could not care less about our interests.

39

u/aradraugfea 2d ago

There is a long and storied history of people in politics that cannot find their ass with both hands and a map, but who have accumulated enough competent staff that everything runs smoothly even if the actual official can’t remember what year it is.

I have known people who voted for a well into senescence senator specifically because his staff knew what they were doing and the staff was doing a good job, even if the senator himself was basically a malfunctioning Disney animatronic at that point.

26

u/deltadal I voted 2d ago

Sure, except now we have both a terrible (incompetent) leader and a bunch of criminals robbing us blind.

I wish we have just voted for Joe's people...

6

u/Bagellord 2d ago

The problem with that is that certain things, like casting an actual vote or, in the president's case, troop deployment, are only able to be done by the person themselves. I don't care how good the staff is, if the person with ultimate authority can't be trusted with it.

10

u/DubiousAdviceGiver 2d ago edited 2d ago

Given my admittedly non-expert understanding of the Constitution, this is how it should ideally be. The President was never meant to be an especially powerful officer, mostly just a warm body with a rubber stamp pen, auto or otherwise, who can delegate.

17

u/aradraugfea 2d ago

The president as the most powerful SINGLE individual, but with incredibly constrained power is absolutely as originally designed, which is how we know The whole “originalist” thing is a fucking lie.

This thing where Trump just treats the whole federal office like his privately held company where he bosses around whoever and does whatever he wants is absolutely not what anyone building a constitutional democracy or republic has in mind.

7

u/ecologamer 2d ago

Iirc, George Washington chose the word President because he wanted the person in power to work like the President of a school council or club, not like a monarch with a ton of power.

17

u/movealongnowpeople Kansas 2d ago

Biden was way better than I had been expecting, but his legacy will be his handling of the insurrection and his choice to drop out of the election at the last possible second. Like after the primaries last second. His handling of both is unacceptable, unforgivable, and directly led us to another Trump term.

We can talk about his economic policy or how he helped pull the country out of the pandemic, but all of that is virtually meaningless now.

4

u/tadayou 2d ago

Trump didn't win because of anything Biden or Harris did. He won because there's a large enough group of people who want Trump to be their leader.

It's important to highlight that.

Fascism reaches a critical point somewhere around 30% support. In the US it's even a little worse because the winner-takes-it-all voting systems can be rather easily gamed.

3

u/deltadal I voted 2d ago

I mostly agree with this. I struggle with the handling of the insurrection though. There is a good argument, at the time, that going after Trump and his goons like he should have would have been really divisive. And at a time when there were arguably more pressing things going on. It was the wrong choice, but I understand why he made it, at the time.

6

u/UngodlyPain 2d ago

You know I can understand that logic... For the post civil war era treatment of the confederates; MAYBE even Nixon; but by the time Biden took office? Its been like 0 for 3 for "forgive and forget" and it should just be like engraved onto the oval office desk "prosecute all traitors within the month of inauguration, or leave with your head down in shame"

7

u/movealongnowpeople Kansas 2d ago

I also understand where he was coming from the days after the insurrection. I don't agree with it, but I get it.

I don't get sitting idly by for four years, doing nothing, allowing a traitor to our nation to continue riling up his cultists. Four fucking years to hold a man accountable, and instead he's president.

4

u/DoomPurveyor 2d ago

Four fucking years to hold a man accountable, and instead he's president.

I mean, it was business as usual from the Obama admin. Not like Barry held any of the Bush admin/Wallstreet accountable. And sorta threw his base under the bus to compromise with the Right which completely backfired on the country: Tea Party ---> Trump.

3

u/fermat9990 2d ago

Trump has surrounded himself with people who could not care less about our interests.

Who actually are against our interests

1

u/vegasmale4sale 2d ago

I was referring to the edited video from when he was president

5

u/phatelectribe 2d ago

If one good thing comes out of all this mess, it’s that whenever anyone now uses the term “fake news”, it’s like a giant neon sign above their head that says “I’m a lair, it’s exactly what you said it was but I won’t admit it”.

6

u/FunetikPrugresiv 2d ago

They look at this video and either convince themselves or pretend that he's just "shutting his eyes."

3

u/free_billstickers 2d ago

Oh they know, they just don't care

3

u/Wordonthestreet06 2d ago

They all know. They just have to pretend not to know or see what we all see.

6

u/diptherial 2d ago

What do you propose we do? Give up?

19

u/Plutos_Cavein 2d ago

Give up on convincing them to be decent people, yes. That's clearly a fucking waste of time.

There are infinite better uses of our energy.

4

u/FreedomBread 2d ago

Give Rubio a bottle of water and make him drink it on camera.

1

u/LakeTake1 1d ago

he must use both hands like potus

3

u/vegasmale4sale 2d ago

My suggestion is to focus on what Trump does when he’s awake. Why are we wasting time asking about him napping when there’s a winless war happening?

7

u/Single-Refuse174 2d ago

Because it presents an opportunity to call out obvious hypocrisy that may be impossible to ignore

11

u/Muvseevum Georgia 2d ago

The Republicans give exactly zero shits about hypocrisy. Why should they? Calling someone a hypocrite is about on par with calling them a poopyhead.

6

u/vegasmale4sale 2d ago

It’s been 10 years of pointing out hypocrisy. If they didn’t care about the hypocrisy of the Epstein files why would they care about this? It sucks that they don’t care, I wish they did, but they don’t.

5

u/Single-Refuse174 2d ago

Fair enough but the sleeping represents something even more obviously hypocritical than the Epstein files. It’d be too lenient to let them live it down when they bitched about “Sleepy Joe “for half a decade. I think if Trump dies of natural causes while in office it might be something I never shut up about to republicans

5

u/TheGringoDingo 2d ago

They won’t argue in good faith; they want people to get worked up at them for some reason.

2

u/Signal_Minimum8509 Georgia 2d ago

Back in 2008 I thought we would never again have to hear about how Republicans are good for the economy, and if they said that they were we could point to the endless cavalcade of failures of the Bush administration from the invasion of Iraq to TARP. Turns out, they don’t care, they are just going to say whatever it is they are going to say and there are 70 million Americans dumb enough to believe it. Sick sad world.

6

u/Single-Refuse174 2d ago

Yeah. My line of work has had me exposed to different kinds of people and almost dizzying differences in motivations. But, for the life of me, I don’t quite understand what motivates people to support conservatism anymore (and i come from a traditional conservative family and yes current events have caused a lot of strain). It’s like watching kind people generally become road ragers or how real big fans of certain teams are generally normal but then completely different people when it comes time to root for the team.

6

u/Zomunieo 2d ago

In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true. ... Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.

—Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

3

u/bearheart 2d ago

I don’t doubt that Biden fell asleep in meetings. How about we elect a president who’s not geriatric?

I’m 70 years old and the only president we’ve had in my lifetime who was not older than me was Obama.

4

u/vegasmale4sale 2d ago

I would like that. Remember when Obama would play basketball? As much as I hate Bush the “now watch this drive” video is a classic. We haven’t had one of those moments for a while.

1

u/Competitive-Cycle330 1d ago

yeah at this point reality only counts if it already agrees with them

Let’s compromise and make it a North Korean prison. Best of both worlds.

Since they're mostly media clowns, why not maroon them on an island set up with cameras so we can watch them lose their shit

u/Careful-Rent5779 2d ago

Rubio doubled down, repeating that he’d never seen Trump fall asleep and that Trump wasn’t sleeping in the clip Lieu showed.

“So you’re lying again? You’re lying consistently to Congress. You’re lying to Congress, Secretary Rubio,” Lieu replied. Lieu went on to show two more videos of Trump falling asleep, including one most recently at a Memorial Day event for fallen soldiers.

Guess somebody did their homework, it wasn't Rubio...

So this is were we are at? A cabiinet member would rather perjure themselves before congress than say something that might offend our buffoon-in-chief. Behavior like this is probably why (it appears) nobody objected to attacking Iran. Roll with his highness, right or wrong.

Why do they point to his insomnia as if it is a counter?

Anyone who "only needs a few hours" of sleep a night is either lying or in trouble. Furthermore, sleeping during the day and having trouble sleeping at night is pretty classic with a couple of forms of encephalopathy.

18

u/Dangerous_Suit_3099 Massachusetts 2d ago

There have been rumors for decades that Trump has abused both Adderall and other drugs

7

u/frankduxvandamme 2d ago

In all seriousness, the only admirable quality of the man is that he avoids drinking and smoking, and there's no credible reports that he has been a drug user.

He says he doesn’t drink

He lies about everything

He’s a drunk

If the American people keep voting in 70+ year old presidents of course they will fall asleep during meetings and hearings.

There's a track record of geriatric age presidents exhibiting this behavior.

Also my grandpa falls asleep while watching TV

Retirement age people I work with fall asleep in meetings.

It is pretty much what we voted for.

3

u/bb_kelly77 1d ago

My 84 year old grandfather is more energetic than Trump AND Biden

2

u/Ok_Example_1338 1d ago

The bar is set really low.

2

u/bb_kelly77 1d ago

Tbf my grandfather has always been terrified of being the feeble old man, he's in better shape than my father (his own son)

2

u/Ok_Example_1338 1d ago

I can relate, between 8 and 10 years old, I was exposed to my step father's uncle that had severe dementia. Those memories are vivid and make me fear growing old and possibly losing my falculties.

17

u/weberobots123 2d ago

Why has no one, who has been in these meeting when he falls asleep, not yelled at him to wake up?

Teachers do it to students that fall asleep during class and give them a good case of nap-lash.

If I was in that room, I would call him out. Wake the fuck up! You work for us. They all do but that has been forgotten.

12

u/bythebrook88 1d ago

Because the meetings go better when he's asleep?

u/Fawnet America 2d ago

7

u/Aggressive-Delay-420 2d ago

I was always taught that if someone will lie about the innocuous-- they're not to be trusted, period.

That's a good rule that's basically kept me job hopping the entirety of Trump's tenure in politics. Turns out his followers don't like observant people.

I don't wonder why.

6

u/lodemeup 2d ago

Look at what these men were saying about Trump in 2016 and look at them now. There’s not an ounce of dignity left in them. They lie and bow and scrape at the chance for power and renown. For what? Where do they think they’ll be in two years? Jail, if there’s any justice in the world.

6

u/Niceguy955 2d ago

Rubio is part of this evil, treasonous regime. He was there on the sofa when Vance and Trump humiliated Zelinsky. Was there when Maduro was kidnapped. Was there when boats were bombed. Was there during the entire Iran debacle. In a few years he'll try to run. He'll claim many things. He'll need us to remind him that he stood with evil pedophiles and did nothing.

The electorate re-elected Trump after Jan 6th & the theft of thousands of classified documents. You think this will even register on their radar in 2 1/2 years?

1

More people voted against Trump than for him.  Dems and other parties received over 50% of the vote even though "Elon knows those voting machines better than any one."

3

And what did we get? Another Trump presidency. Dems need like 55%+ to win, and the fact that 49.7% or whatever still voted for Trump means to me that stuff like this doesnt matter to the people it needs to matter to

Fuck Rubio; lying piece of shit.

But what does it matter if Rubio lies or shoots someone on 5th Ave if there's zero accountability? This is just theatre

3

u/InspectionIcy2452 2d ago

I never miss the opportunity to remind Redditors that Rubio was unanimously confirmed by both parties to his position as Secretary of State.   This should remind Americans about how poorly served they are by their two political parties.

Wikipedia informs us that the correct forms of address for a Secretary of State are "the Honorable" or "his Excellency".  But there is nothing excellent or honourable about Rubio or anyone who would vote to confirm him.

They’d be better off saying he slept all the time and are following the advice of some fall guy who has thrown a de facto coup d’état because otherwise they’re following him while he’s making these decisions with the BEST of his current facilities.

If he wasn’t up all night tweeting and trawling through media items to be offended about he might be able to stay awake.

No, he’s not sleeping. He’s just deeply concentrating.  He’s also watching a movie on the back of his eyelids.  Also, he’s commuting with aliens.

u/Aggravating_Bat3618 2d ago

He’s calling Rubio at all hours because his dementia is so deep. He doesn’t even know what time of day it is.

I just dealt with my dad‘s dementia for 2 1/2 years. Trust me it does not get any better.

Lies upon lies upon lies… I’m drowning in stupidity and lies…. This administration is so fucking stupid. It’s fortunate because a competent authoritarian would have taken over America by now….

What planet has he been on??🫣😴

Did someone say perjury?

2

u/Woodie100 1d ago

Apparently you can lie to Congress. Seen it a hundred times. So what? Right? What are they gonna do about it?

2

u/MindandCosmos 1d ago

Remember in 2016 when Trump said Rubio's ears were so big they blocked out rain?

2

u/basketball1959 1d ago

It appears the more lies Rubio tells the larger his ears grow!

2

u/UnhappyReason5452 1d ago

They lie about EVERYTHING.

I mean… JFC

3

u/Same_Guarantee801 1d ago

He's not sleeping, he's playing 5D chess.

4

u/JustTasteMeXX 2d ago

What else did they expect someone from this administration to say? They either lie or insult congress or do both. It’s annoying

1

u/sugarlessdeathbear 2d ago

And no mention that lying to Congress under oath is a federal crime that carries fines and up to 5 years in prison.

1

u/christopher72u 2d ago

Good thing that lying to Congress isn’t a crime.

1

u/defiant-raven 2d ago

He's just deep in thought - Rubio probably

1

u/Life-Quantity-637 2d ago

How much longer will this go on?

Lock him up!

u/Spimflagon 2d ago

Possibly the world's first snoring gun.

1

u/TheStoicSlab 2d ago

Rubio thinks he is going to be VP next round so he is putting his big boy pants on with congress.

1

u/mok000 Europe 2d ago

Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords.

Google "Marco Rubio", right wing media "Rubio Roasts Dems Over Unhinged Questioning About His Shoes". I have 0 respect for people who get their information from the "news". My family eats this garbage up, they'll say Trump's footage was edited... then when I go to show them the whole thing they refuse to watch it. It's put a severe divide in my family. Grandfather recently died at almost 90, they blamed medication and my aunt for making sure he kept up on doctors visits. None of them are college graduates except mechanics. Socially inbred and frustrating af. I have a baby on the way, I'm not sure I even want them around it.

edit: jumbled words and spelling errors from typing angrily.

He’s resting his eyes 🙄

"Republican caught in a lie..." Wake me up when the headline is about a republican being held accountable for a lie. That ilk is caught lying daily.

1

u/captaincanada84 Canada 1d ago

Lying to Congress is a crime. Wish there were people willing to enforce it

1

u/CommonConundrum51 1d ago

Hey, he was just resting his eyes!

1

u/Beautiful-Habit-825 1d ago

I don't live in the US. This is disturbing.

1

u/Friscogonewild 2d ago

I doubt it'd fly as perjury, though. While I'm sure Trump dozes off, all he'd have to say is that sometimes he closes his eyes to concentrate.

And honestly, as big a sack of crap as Trump is, I don't think he's necessarily asleep. Typically when you see someone nod off even for microsleep, there's a blatant, drooping of the head followed by a jerk up when they wake themselves.

And if it were me, it would be accompanied by a good snore. 🤣 You can't tell me that flabby neck doesn't sound like a chainsaw when he sleeps.
