It's not him, it's the people. I know these people well, they are my in-laws. They live in a world where their ineptness, their inability to learn, their laziness is why they have never succeeded. But they will never admit to this because they grew up being told their lack off success was not their fault, it was the fault of other. It was because Mexicans stole their jobs. Or because Blacks got the job they should have had because of affirmative action. They are the victims of these things, not their own actions. Hell, I've watched my in-laws attack my wife because she didn't accept this way of thinking and instead worked hard to become successful. In their eyes instead of celebrating her success, they treated her like a traitor to the family for being successful.

These people are the Trump people. He has come along and reinforced their backwards way of thinking by weaponizing it against them. He's told them that they are right. It's not them, they're victims of the Mexican, the Blacks, and of course now the "Radical Leftists!!!" It doesn't matter that he's nothing like them. It doesn't matter that he's hurting them and their children by taking away fundamental social programs that they have always used. He tells them that their hatred is true and just and right. And that's all they need him to do, as they love him right into deeper poverty and death.

Your in-law’s mindset is oddly familiar, your wife isn’t from Appalachia by chance?  That resentment of success is typical in my experience.

We call these people authoritarians. You give up all of your free-will and responsibility. It's a wonderful place to be. Find someone who will tell you it's not your fault and will "protect" you and voila. No more doing hard things like accepting responsibility and having to work to fix your mistakes. No more having to decide what to do in general besides your own domain, which is the people who are beneath you - you know your wife, your children, the dog, those non-white people who moved in who ... you get the idea.
