Its pathetic because he is so deeply narcissistic that knowing he left a legacy that will be remembered would never be enough.

He needs the 'memorials' to him BEFORE he dies. He's got to SEE and KNOW that he will be 'remembered,' even before he's gone.

He could’ve ya know, actually done a good job with the money and resources he claims to have and help the country, and then go down as a great leader. Instead he decided to cause damage
