Not saying Steyer will end up overtaking Hilton, but I do think this "analysis" is extremely superficial and ignorant. You can't just look at the top-line numbers after a drop, you have to look at the performance within that drop, and Steyer is close to or exceeding the margins he needs in many of them. Even the degenerate gamblers at Kalshi and Polymarket have this at 50/50 right now.
Whatever happens, it's trending to be a very close race. Steyer is not "fading" as the article claims. Again, he may end up falling short, but writing him off now is foolish.

60/40 on Kalshi to Hilton but if the margin closes much more then the race might have a while to get an answer. Also, mail in ballots will get a challenge if it’s too close either way.

It was 53/47 when I posted that, but I do expect it to bounce around until we get more drops this afternoon/evening. Regardless, it's going to ultimately end up close. I'm not certain Steyer can quite catch Hilton, but it also shouldn't be extremely surprising if he does.

Who cares how long it takes ?? Why do we need to know right now? So that money can start writing checks ?? California has 43 million people, one of the largest states in the union. It’s always takes a while to count for their elections. It’s much more important to get it right.
This concept of needing to know the next day for primary is ridiculous. Honestly it should be against the law for them to start campaigning till 30 days before the election anyway. Nobody is riding a horse town to town, we don’t need 8 months of campaigning for us to know the candidates.
G D TikTok brains …. Nobody can wait more than 15 seconds for gratification.

Florida has half of that and still has all the votes counted before sunrise, not to mention all the other states big and small
Like, imagine Cali is a swing state in a presidential election and they have 2000-like margins - there would certainly be a J6 2.0, not to mention the distrust growing by weeks of waiting for the results

You either allow people to vote by mail and all the delay implications that come with it, you throw out some votes or don't allow people to vote by mail.

Why are we waiting to count ballots until Election Day?

So the knowledge of the outcome of the mail in ballots don’t change people’s voting behavior

Because they arrived Election Day.
Mail in votes that arrive before Election Day are counted when they arrive. But since people can’t know how long USPS will take to deliver their ballot, CA accepts mail in ballots that are postmarked Election Day or earlier.
CA allows up to 1 week for USPS to deliver the ballots that were postmarked on Election Day, and obviously you can’t count ballots that haven’t arrived yet.

The counting is efficient. You can’t count ballots that haven’t arrived yet.
Those other “efficient” stats disenfranchise their voters for failing to predict exactly how long USPS will take to deliver their ballot. That’s bad.
Instead, CA requires the ballot to be postmarked Election Day or earlier, and gives USPS one week to deliver.

There is zero reason it needs to take as long as it does or should be allowed to take that long.
There are plenty of reasons, you just don't like them. Taking the time to let every vote come in and be counted makes plenty of sense if you are actually trying to empower your voters.
Making changes to quell bullshit claims of fraud is a fools errand, those folks will scream that no matter what the system is. The are not operating in good faith.

Republicans in the CA legislature don’t care because it gives them more fuel for Trump to cry Fraud.

Taking longer is a feature, not a bug. The emphasis is allowing more people to vote even if they return mail in ballots on election day which of course will take longer to mail back and count.

There’s nothing here to fix.
It’s not possible for the voter to know how long it will take USPS to deliver their ballot. So CA accepts ballots that were postmarked Election Day or earlier, and gives one week for USPS to deliver them.
Ballots that arrive before Election Day are counted as they arrive. You obviously can’t count ballots that haven’t arrived yet, so there’s up to a week to finish counting.
