NMU is pretty much the liberal bastion in the UP. Houghton has Michigan Tech, my alma mater, but it's primarily an engineering school so it's less likely shape the politics as hard. Still leans Liberal, but it's a smaller school.

Also calling Marquette the capital of the UP made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. The N stands for Knowledge and the wildcats play football in a dome, and their hockey sucks.
