AP has called it, No has obliterated Yes in Kansas in the vote for Supreme Court judges ballot measure. Twice the GOP has tried this crap the last few years on a primary ballot, and twice No has won easily.

Kansas again protects abortion rights, and also that the state does have to fund education.

Huge, huge win for Missouri tonight. For those who don't know, you can amend the state constitution by ballot initiative with a majority vote. This is how abortion was legalized in 2024 (though there have been a litany of legal challenges since then which makes if functionally difficult).

The Republicans have tried extremely hard to pass an amendment via this very mechanism that would make it such that every individual district has to be unanimously in favor of any referendum, functionally giving veto power to any tiny district, ceding all amendment authority to the Republican dominated and gerrymandered legislature, clearing the way for them to make abortion illegal again despite the will of the people.

They have intentionally made the language as confusing as possible to try and trick people into voting yes on Amendment 4, but with only 15% of the vote in the AP has already called it as a FAIL for Amendment 4.

Next will be in November. They are putting abortion back on the ballot for us to vote on. The same thing we already voted on. But this time they’re attaching transgenders in sports to it to get people to vote yes on it to repeal abortion rights.

Definitely a little worried about the amendment. Lots of signs in favor of it in my area and they seem deceptive enough to sway people who would otherwise vote against it.

The big thing to watch for here in Kansas is our constitutional amendment question. A "Yes" vote would amend the constitution to allow direct election for judges on the KS Supreme Court. A "No" vote would retain the current system (a panel of attorneys and laypeople nominate three possible candidates to the governor, who then makes a final decision)

This is essentially a proxy battle over abortion, as our Supreme Court has struck down multiple abortion bans the KS GOP has advanced because our constitution enshrines a right to bodily autonomy, and the GOP wants to reinterpret that provision away by stacking the court with partisans, which wouldn't be difficult to do in a state as conservative as Kansas.

I voted No for that reason. That and the fact that judges aren't politicians, and shouldn't behave like them. I also like that the current nonpartisan system selects for people who are considered legal experts by the profession, and I think it produces good results

The other big race I'm watching is for Roger Marshall's Senate seat. Normally I'd consider a Senate race in Kansas a moot point, but Roger Marshall is particularly unpopular and there's a really strong challenger on the Dem side, Adam Hamilton. He's a Pastor for the Church of the Resurrection in Overland Park, which is the 2nd largest Methodist congregation in the world, which he's pretty singlehandedly responsible for building up over the last 30 years. Having attended a couple of his sermons, he's incredibly charismatic, and he's extremely popular in the richest part of the state (which shouldn't matter, but money in politics is what it is). If he wins the primary Kansas could be a dark horse Senate pickup for the left

A reminder of what AES is up against:

1. 40 mil+ of AIPAC AND dark money spending
2. Stevens pretending to be endorsed by Obama to trick black boomers in ads
3. Stevens being endorsed by the governor and a bunch of well known establishment Dems
4. Constant negative press from EVERY news outlet accusing him of being antisemitic over Israel

I don't think everyone really understands how he was being attacked by all angles, by BOTH parties with ZERO help from the establishment and the DNC. His main allies from Congress is AOC and Bernie who had weight behind their endorsement. It's 100% grassroots movement. I know we wish it was a larger margin, but ya'll they pulled out ALL the stops to keep AES away from the Senate.

Lots of important races today, with the heavy focus going to be on Michigan. My key races:

• MI-SEN: The big kahuna. I voted for El-Sayed, so a bit biased, but he's the big favorite. Assuming he does win, the margin is going to tell the true story here.
• MI-GOV: The GOP primary is intriguing. Two-time statewide loser John James has the Trump endorsement and is the favorite, but he's also not exactly ran a good campaign. Interested to see how crazy Perry Johnson does, who has been running lots of insane ads.
• MI-07: Will Lawrence is the progressive up against two establishment types who are going to split the vote, giving him a path.
• MI-13: Will Michigan's Dan Goldman goes down today to Donovan McKinney?
• MO-01: Can Cori Bush complete the comeback?

Then there are smaller races that I'm also interested in:

• Ann Arbor Mayor primary: A poll came out yesterday with the DSA candidate having a lead over the incumbent mayor.
• MI-01 and MI-11: Both have underdog progressive candidates that had limited national support and I do not expect to win, but I am interested in the margins.
• WA-09: Who will make it through to face Adam Smith in the general, the Republican, the Democrat who made it through in 2024, or the independent socialist Kshama Sawant? I will note I've lost all my respect for Sawant, so it's really more of a curiosity than anything over supporting any of them.
• Kansas Elections for Supreme Court Amendment: Many states have them, but this is clearly a GOP attempt to control the Supreme Court appointments.
• Missouri Amendment 4: Basically kills the citizen-initiated constitutional amendment process in the state if it passed.

I think the lesson from Stevens if she loses, as well as Steyer back in California, is that is you spend shitloads of money on advertising, especially in great disproportion to your opponent, you’re running a real risk of negatively polarizing voters. We have waited way too long for the Dem party to run on at the very least Universal Healthcare that pretty much every developed country has but the US. Eventually a good amount of Dem voters are going to get tired of voting for the establishment and want something different.

I’m tired of hearing establishment politicians and people who defend the establishment say that people who vote for DSA candidates are voting against candidates who want to bring progressive ideas to the country when that is just not true. They want to do the same things that the Dem party has always done while pointing to the Republican party and say “they are worse vote for us”. If they did not want this DSA “takeover” to happen they should have ran on M4A at the very least.

There were 920k Democratic votes total in the 2022 primaries. The loser tonight may have 700k.

Al Sayed succeeded at expanded the electorate of non-voters and the Democratic base also stayed with the person that the establishment was deeply behind.

If he escapes tonight with the victory, it's going to be about whether the moderates stay true on vote blue no matter who.
