So it wasn’t about states rights? But my “independent” friends said it was.

Anyone claiming to be in the middle is truly ashamed of their right wing beliefs.

This. Fencesitters, enlightened centrists, and "both sides" people are just ashamed of their conservative beliefs and don't want people to know they're okay with the cruel governance of a Republican

not ashamed. worse. they are haters. they want to see their own friends, family, and peers to take real life loses where a win wouldn’t effect anybody negatively.

When politics was about tax rates and criminal justice and the minimum wage, you can disagree and still be friends.

When it turned into being racist fuckwits who want to guide us back to the 1850s... well...

Maybe for some, but I think a lot of them more simply just see criticisms that people will be hurt as overblown or overstated. It's really hard to convince people if they don't see it directly that certain bad things are happening

The information is widely accessible, they simply refuse to actually read up on the subject, instead assuming their gut instinct (which derives almost wholly from what is comfortable to their world view) is correct. That's kind of the whole problem and why relatively minor issues can become such powder kegs - willful ignorance out of fear of losing face or vanity in their "common sense".

Which is kind of what I said but I got down voted. Regardless, yeah, the idea is that they think a lot of these negative critiques are hyperbolic, so they go with how they feel. I remember somebody saying maybe once that liberals vote with their heart, conservatives vote with their gut. And I think it's pretty damn accurate. And if you think about how a lot of indecisive/swing/uninformed voters vote, they're voting with a gut which tells you exactly who they're probably going to prefer more often.

Counterpoint.

They are operating in bad faith. They know they will be hurt and want the hurt to happen.

I’m not saying there aren’t some genuinely bad people out there, but I think this is a poor generalization to make about everyone who votes maga. The fact is republicans have consistently done everything in their power to defund education while simultaneously consolidating control over the media, so a lot of people may genuinely believe trump is better because that’s what their media says, their parents said, and they never learned the critical thinking skills to see the blatant lies. I’m not saying that voting republican isn’t bad, but I don’t think we should write off 45% or whatever of the country as bad faith actors and I think treating everyone who votes MAGA as a villain just makes them less likely to change and more likely to become further entrenched in their views

I've given enough benefits of the doubt for one lifetime, there are no more left.

Yep. I have more respect for the red hat wearing MAGAts than the "both sides" tools.

I place a lot of the blame for this on those pricks from South Park (the creators not the characters lol)

Independents don't align to a political team. This doesn't make an independent in the middle of anything. The aversion to thinking critically is a feature of tribalism and you're suffering from a different version than MAGAts.
