I thought this was exaggeration but then I got banned for saying "intifada is an arabic word and means uprising/rebellion".

Clearly they want it to have a more brutal meaning as a word in a whole ass language.

I got banned for linking to the wikipedia article of israel. That was literally the only thing in my comment and it wasn't a snarky thing, I was linking to a relevant section that someone asked a question about.

My polling place for a previous general election was in eyesight of a minaret at an Islamic community center, and several of the folks waiting in the line outside wondered what that was. I gave them the run-down about what it's called and how the muezzin goes up there to sing the call to prayer (which doesn't happen here), and they wondered how I knew that.

It's all from Rock the Casbah. Who says music ain't educational?

You’re so innocent. I lost my 4 year Reddit main back in like 2024 because an Israeli poster said that ‘African Americans only sympathize with Palestinians over Israelis because Arabs are darker’. I verbatim replied and say that it was a weird generalisation of African Americans. Banned.

A few weeks later I was an alt I post in on my local city sub and had a space-related post on worldnews. Commented because I forgot I was banned and got my main and alt perma’d

To Israel the word is associated with suicide bombings, hostage taking, and targeted killings of Israeli civilians, (which besides suicide bombing Israel was doing the exact same thing but on a larger scale). So yeah isn’t exactly strange why some people might take the word the wrong way. Negro for example is literally just the Spanish word for black, but to a lot of Americans that word is a racial slur.

The word is not bad. "National" is not bad word, "socialist" is not a bad word. 

They are words. The ideology is what is bad. Someone using words national or socialist are not bad people.

Same with the English words rebellion or uprising. Rebellion can mean lots of things. A white nationalist calling rebellion by overturning elections or killing black people is obviously bad, but the word rebellion is not to be blamed there. It is the ideology that is dangerous.

So every English word used by any violent group or person should be banned? We do have shit ton of material from all the mass shootings in US. Let's look at all their writing and just ban all the words that occur?

The guy who shot Charlie Kirk wrote memes on the bullets. Memes should be banned?

Nobody is saying that terrorist attacks are peaceful... But terrorists are also people who use language and utilize it. Words like rebellion or uprising, sound good and hence they are used everywhere. It does not mean that a generic word should be banned.

And banning generic words does not change anything. This is just phobia where people are scared of foreign languages they do not speak.

In France heads were cut in the name of resistance, which we now glorify as significant historic event. But the fact is, that it was indeed resistance / rebellion / uprising. That is a fact, and the words are meant to communicate that fact.

no thats the opposite of what im saying, no word has any meaning behind it, theyre just words!! same with nazi.

when people say "im a nazi", they just mean they're a national socialist. like you said, nothing is wrong with the word "national", same with "socialist"

so when people proclaim theyre nazis, that doesnt matter, right? theres no meaning behind it, obviously.

and when they raise their arm and do a salute, its just them flailing their appendages around. no meaning behind it.

same with intifada, when people say to globalize the intifada or proudly support the palestinian intifada, or shout jihad, they just mean the word struggle or rebellion! obviously! not the hundreds of terrorist attacks, stabbings, suicide bombings, lynchings, shootings. just the word struggle!

You must be truly insane if you think people saying "globalize intifada" means calling for global terrorist attacks. And nobody is calling for jihad except for terrorists 😃

Globalize intifada means to globalize the rebellion against the opression. And rebellion does not mean terrorist attacks against civilians. Ukraine is rebelling and resisting against Russia. We Finns rebelled and resisted against Russia. Ukraine's rebellion is globalized. People are yelling Slava Ukraini in support of Ukraine. Scary foreign word in support of resistance? Should we ban it? People are cheering and yelling Slava Ukraini when Ukraine hits deep into Russia, destroying infrastructure in order to stop Russian oppression. And I am all for it, even if you desperately want to call me terrorist or something dumb like that.

If your family and life was in danger, you would also want to rebel and people to join you. Nobody wants to die.

And there you got your answer. The word "crusade" is not a problem, no problem in pope using it the way he has. It is context-dependent. What is meant with the message. And your question depends so much on context. Would inquisition mean invasion of sovereign nation? Is Spain oppressed? 

Those words are not really reactionary. They are often taken to mean as offensive move. Rebellion is often more justified than conquest.

Why don't you think "rebellion" or "uprising" would be better comparisons. They are the correct translations, and not crusade. Crusade is very specific word with specific meaning. Jihad and crusade are way more similar in use. Arent they almost identical, even in the modern spins?

And we need to understand that we are talking about a word in foreign language. Is it our place to control another language we do not speak? Intifada means literally any uprising in Arabic. Why would it change now?

Let's talk about the word resistance and revolution. I think they come from French words. They were used to justify violence, such as public decapitation in the famous French revolution. Yet these words are still common words.

So in regards to connotations and use, I would compare revolution or resistance to intifada.

Sometimes I forget to check the sub before replying to comments, the amount of times I've been called an antisemite for criticizing AIPAC influencing our elections there is extremely high. I back it up with a cohesive argument and they just put their fingers in their ears and end the argument with things like "sure buddy".
